In the film, American author Peter Neal, while in Rome promoting his latest murder-mystery novel, becomes embroiled in the search for a serial killer who may have been inspired to kill by his novel. Argento was inspired by a series of incidents which saw an obsessed fan telephone the director to criticize him for the damaging psychological effects of his previous work. The telephone calls culminated in death threats towards Argento, who channelled the experience into the writing of Tenebre.

I had just watched Chopping Mall a few nights ago, then discovered there's a recent "rock opera" that's more like a dance album based on it, made by the same guy who did the original movie soundtrack! I almost put Halloween 3 on this afternoon instead of Night of the Demons. After much deliberation I went with the movie I had not seen before.

"Trilogy of terror" was on one of those low-budget channels yesterday - not Comet, but something like it

I didn't really that the Zuni Warrior story was written by Richard Matheson, until I borrowed a collection of his from the library

@ParrScream - Phantasm is great, but I've only seen one of the sequels, the 2nd one, which was made a full 8 years after the original, and it was fun, but was no where near as good as the original. Still, was surprised and delighted to see a young James LeGros in it! I think up until the point, the earliest movie I'd seen him in was Living In Oblivion wherein he plays the Brad Pitt parody guy with the decorative eye-patch. He's always fun

I was talking with my buddy - anybody ever see The Medusa Touch w/ Richard Burton & Lee Remick? Really great creepy movie from the 70s where R.Burton believes he is the cause of all of the catastrophies - earthquakes, sinking ships, airplane disasters - happening in the world. Really great, no one seems to know about it.

Vincent price was from St. Louis, where I was born (of all places!!!)

It's super weird - it's got a little Omen vibe in it, some great 70s cheese, and then of course Burton is chewing the scenery. It's fun and creepy!

And then not too long ago I stumbled on Willard which I hadn't seen since I was a kid and that was great too if you haven't seen

If we're talking horror films I'll add 1972's Silent Night, Bloody Night with cult fave Mary Woronov.

@Randy Marthins - I did not know that about Vincent Price, but I visited St. Louis for the first time in my life in 2022 and was delighted by The City Museum and Fitz's rootbeer floats! Sadly did not manage to get a "concrete"

@Greg Sarjeant - I tend to save up all the horror I wanna watch for the year for October, and then I get to as many on my list as I can!

@Roffle House of Horrors - I saw Willard in my early 20s with a friend who had pet rats in the room with us as we watched it!

I love to do seasonal saturation with this genre and then put it away too.

what's everyone's scariest movie? mine has got to be the shining. saw it in the theatre - i was like 13, 14? i remember standing up and yelling at the screen at the end when danny is in the maze - "run danny! run!" this track is great btw

@abattoir 🩸🩸🩸 plum - Yeah, it's like trial by West Philly fire to drop the teen into that wonderful crazy mess direct from tranquil Vermont! But now they understand some of the spirit of West Philly!

@DJ Tenderloin for me it's Poltergeist, that scene when they fall into the hole and the dead bodies come up and surround them. Watched that on a sunny summer afternoon and was terrified.

@Mary Bones - My pumpkin survived the night! My block is pretty quiet, but DO have to fend off the squirrels until AFTER Halloween, at which point they can go to town!

I was also going to say The Shining - though I think the book was even scarier. Still the only thing I've watched or read that made me keep the light on when I went to sleep.

Mary Bones you're right - Poltergeist was scary as all hell! when the tree comes alive and starts to eat that kid?? and when the clown doll starts moving....oh man. that movie is great.

The Shining is absolutely scary, don't debate that. I remember being terrified watching Alien too.

@Randy Marthins - I think I'd like The Medusa Touch a lot more than Cabin In the Woods. I think that 70s horror is at a pace I prefer. Not that there aren't a ton of good new horror films, but Cabin In the Woods I saw in the theater and it kinda was an onslaught of too many concepts, though I realize that was part of the point!

Exorcist of course is pretty great

Oh boy, when the Pazuzu frame shows up in Exorcist! That was a sleep-with-the-lights-on one for me.

Just that one face, man.

The Blatty book scared me, not so much the movie.

@John Coffey - Silent Night, Bloody Night is another one on my list! LOVE Mary Woronov in everything I've seen her in! She is fascinating. AND that one was shot in my good friend's hometown of Oyster Bay, Long Island!

@Mary Bones / @DJ Tenderloin - Poltergeist scared the crap outta me as a kid, ESPECIALLY the tree falling through the window/ lighting/thunder scene, but really it's all about that TV static for me. I still get a tightness in my chest thinking about how much that scared me as a kid! And that was when there was regularly white noise on the TV when channels signed off for the night before the advent of the Infomercial!

yes it's true i never thought of that - tv static is something that simply doesn't exist anymore

@Greg Sarjeant - I do love The Shining book, and I think Jack comes across as less sympathetic right off the bat in it: That whole business with hitting a kid on a bike with his car and never finding the kid?!...Like, he starts off worse than the Jack Torrance of the film. BUT I still prefer the film if I had to choose

@DJ Tenderloin - Yeah, that was eerie, but made 1000x eerier by Poltergeist! I also just think the attitude parents had about that and a lot of other scary movies in the 80s was "oh, this is a "kids movie" so they showed it to us young. I saw it without my parents, just went with my older brother and got permanently spooked

@ Tenderloin In mid 70's I was told channel 29 ended their broadcast day with Goodnight by the Beatles. Stayed up late one night to see that it was true, it was.Then static on the tv I guess.

@Mary Bones - Right. I was thinking about this with certain horror movies that rely on outdated technology. The Japanese early 2000s horror movie I saw as part of the Philly Film Fest's "Danger After Dark" programming 20+ years ago uses a very specific type of flip-phone pre-smartphone. There are better examples, but that is one that comes to mind for me from a very specific period of time

@Randy Marthins - ACK! I wonder if it was the one my childhood block! I grew up near Elizabeth Haddon School in Haddonfield and there was, back then, a vacant house on Peyton Ave that had a tragedy in the 70s that led to it being empty for most of my childhood. We had a LOT of stories about that house!

VCR purchase in 1982 allowed me to see every R and X movie I had not seen. Midnight Cowboy, Caligula, Last Tango in Paris. A doorman let me sneak into The Exorcist when I was 14.

@Roffle House of Horrors - I guess I just never really got into Clive Barker, but I WILL concede that Stephen King's book endings are often disappointing! Like, in "IT" for instance. Come on!

@John Coffey - Not only did we have a VCR, but back then there was no enforced rating system and my parents didn't care. That coupled with the fact I was the youngest in the entire family, including all cousins and siblings, I saw a LOT of spooky or grown-up stuff young, but I think that just made me more of a film fanatic if anything!

@Dale Hazelton - Captain Kangaroo was great! The Please Touch Museum in Centennial Hall, Fairmount Park in Parkside, Philly (neighborhood where my dad grew up and played on the old centennial carousel) has pieces from Captain Kangaroo's old set on display in their basement!

i read that they modernized the elevators with new otis units. but it's like the charm of the wooden escalators at macy's in nyc's herald square. they are clunky and loud but worn by the feet of millions of shoppers.

@Dale Hazelton - I love the rollercoaster-like thrill of wondering "Will this break down with me on it" every time one rides a super-old antique like that! I always preferred the old wooden rollercoasters. They're so much bumpier but the thrill is more organic/gravity-based!
