If that was the Ohio Express of “Yummy Yummy Yummy” and “Chewy Chewy” fame at the start of the show, it certainly didn’t sound very “bubblegum” to me.

the ohio express were multifaceted!

and there was a real band and a studio band

they also had an anti police brutality song that was covered by gg allin

and very closely related bubblegum studio band kasenetz katz super circus had the first song i know of making fun of ronald reagan

Opinion: “bubblegum” was a term used by fuddy-duddy hippies to disparage rock ’n’ roll at the same time they were inventing some rubbish called “rock” to replace it with.

i guess, i mean bubblegum pop in my book is that specific extremely poppy studio stuff like the ohio express. i'd rather listen to it than a lot of "rock" stuff but it was very manufactured

i do think there's a reason that early punk hearkened back to girl groups and r&b/rock n roll though!

Don’t get me started about what a horrible person Al Capp was. Years ago, Kitchen Sink Press reprinted the “Li’l Abner” dailies in year-by-year volumes. They started with its debut in 1934, but KSP went out of business before they could get to the 1960’s. I bought them out of historical curiosity but stopped after the Shmoo’s debut in 1948. By that time, I decided the strip and its creator were overrated.

By the time of Joanie Phonie, I think the strip was drawn by an uncredited Frank Frazetta and had taken a nonsensical and shrill view against youth and the New Left. Judging by Capp’s 1971 “The Hardhat's Bedtime Story Book”, he probably cheered for Peter Boyle’s character in “Joe”.

Back in the 1940’s, Al Capp called Will Eisner and suggested they do some mutual publicity by parodying each other’s strips. Will did a story in “The Spirit” about ““Li’l Adam, the Stupid Mountain Boy” but never heard back from Capp, who didn’t reciprocate.

because of course al capp is from bridgeport

So was Walt Kelly, who created a carnival-barker bear in “Pogo” named “P.T. Bridgeport”!

i grew up in ct and my dad is a big history dork so i know pretty much every famous person from ct from like 1970 and before

I thought myself well versed in Greco-Roman mythology but I don’t remember reading anything about moonmen. Maybe it involved some 13th labor for Hercules I never heard of.
