TAndy 12:11:06 PM
Ohai Commie Francis. Waiting for my bud to get in the car then I'll be off again, but keeping it locked most likely.
Commie Francis (host) 12:12:15 PM
hi tandy and richard! it seems like i just got off the radio and here i am again
Commie Francis (host) 12:12:27 PM
and here you are!

richard lyons 12:27:35 PM
I can't seem to stop playing Lewsberg.
Commie Francis (host) 12:28:19 PM
that's another one that took time to grow on me!
Tim Kilgannon 12:47:39 PM
One vote yes for lazy Sunday
Commie Francis (host) 12:50:56 PM
noted!
David Shortell 12:57:05 PM
It's about an hour too late to play any live versions or alternate takes of "Sunday Morning", eh?
Commie Francis (host) 1:00:15 PM
on one hand yes it's afternoon on the other hand it certainly is mellow
David Shortell 1:05:05 PM
If that was the Ohio Express of “Yummy Yummy Yummy” and “Chewy Chewy” fame at the start of the show, it certainly didn’t sound very “bubblegum” to me.
Commie Francis (host) 1:05:09 PM
here's that vashti interview i was talking about, i think
Commie Francis (host) 1:05:12 PM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IoCe69tJ7TY&t=9s
Commie Francis (host) 1:05:29 PM
the ohio express were multifaceted!
Commie Francis (host) 1:05:36 PM
and there was a real band and a studio band
Commie Francis (host) 1:09:02 PM
they also had an anti police brutality song that was covered by gg allin
Commie Francis (host) 1:09:52 PM
and very closely related bubblegum studio band kasenetz katz super circus had the first song i know of making fun of ronald reagan
David Shortell 1:14:06 PM
Opinion: “bubblegum” was a term used by fuddy-duddy hippies to disparage rock ’n’ roll at the same time they were inventing some rubbish called “rock” to replace it with.
Commie Francis (host) 1:16:22 PM
i guess, i mean bubblegum pop in my book is that specific extremely poppy studio stuff like the ohio express. i'd rather listen to it than a lot of "rock" stuff but it was very manufactured
Commie Francis (host) 1:17:08 PM
i do think there's a reason that early punk hearkened back to girl groups and r&b/rock n roll though!
David Shortell 1:36:17 PM

Commie Francis (host) 1:45:50 PM
it's true that doesn't look anything like her!
Commie Francis (host) 1:46:07 PM
but i'm not familiar with that era of lil abner i guess
David Shortell 2:03:12 PM
Don’t get me started about what a horrible person Al Capp was. Years ago, Kitchen Sink Press reprinted the “Li’l Abner” dailies in year-by-year volumes. They started with its debut in 1934, but KSP went out of business before they could get to the 1960’s. I bought them out of historical curiosity but stopped after the Shmoo’s debut in 1948. By that time, I decided the strip and its creator were overrated.
David Shortell 2:03:19 PM
By the time of Joanie Phonie, I think the strip was drawn by an uncredited Frank Frazetta and had taken a nonsensical and shrill view against youth and the New Left. Judging by Capp’s 1971 “The Hardhat's Bedtime Story Book”, he probably cheered for Peter Boyle’s character in “Joe”.
Commie Francis (host) 2:03:36 PM
oh yeah i do know that al capp was a real jerk
David Shortell 2:12:08 PM
Back in the 1940’s, Al Capp called Will Eisner and suggested they do some mutual publicity by parodying each other’s strips. Will did a story in “The Spirit” about ““Li’l Adam, the Stupid Mountain Boy” but never heard back from Capp, who didn’t reciprocate.
Commie Francis (host) 2:26:07 PM
dave the spaz from wfmu sent me a thing he wrote about djing at wpkn in bridgeport when it was still part of the university of bridgeport and the school mascot was the shmoo
Commie Francis (host) 2:26:20 PM
because of course al capp is from bridgeport
David Shortell 2:30:43 PM
So was Walt Kelly, who created a carnival-barker bear in “Pogo” named “P.T. Bridgeport”!
Commie Francis (host) 2:35:50 PM
and so was pt barnum haha
Commie Francis (host) 2:36:33 PM
i grew up in ct and my dad is a big history dork so i know pretty much every famous person from ct from like 1970 and before
David Shortell 2:49:57 PM
I thought myself well versed in Greco-Roman mythology but I don’t remember reading anything about moonmen. Maybe it involved some 13th labor for Hercules I never heard of.
Commie Francis (host) 2:50:15 PM
here's an ancient grecian photo of a moonman http://www.dvddrive-in.com/images/e-h/hercmoonmen3.jpg
