Carousel (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) [Expanded Edition] Angel Records 2001
Carousel is a 1956 American drama fantasy musical film based on the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein stage musical of the same name. A score chock full of beautifully stirring tunes, but one that has also been controversial because of its glorification of abuse. One of my fave songs is If I Loved You. Carousel is the second musical by the team of Richard Rodgers (music) and Oscar Hammerstein II (book and lyrics). The 1945 work was adapted from Ferenc Molnár's 1909 play Liliom, transplanting its Budapest setting to the Maine coastline.

David Shortell 3:10:04 PM
That must be Bob Hoskins in the Bootsy sunglasses. Who's beside him?
Esoterica (host) 3:11:34 PM
Hi David, it's Kathy Tyson from Neil Jordan's Mona Lisa.
David Shortell 3:12:23 PM
I remember when "Combat Rock" made WPRB's worst records of 1982 list.
Esoterica (host) 3:15:41 PM
haha for sure, david. and with the biggest clash hits!
David Shortell 3:17:38 PM
That Bowie song came out 5 days before Apollo 11 launched (and about 7 days before Chappaquiddick).
Esoterica (host) 3:20:13 PM
it's incredible to watch kubrick's film (knowing it came out before the moon landing)
Esoterica (host) 3:23:01 PM
cool facts, david

April 3, 1968 marked the official release of both “2001” and another famous s-f film featuring actors in simian costumes.
Brian D 3:30:41 PM
Was that some slowed down solo version of Badlands? Only ever heard the full band radio hit of that song
Esoterica (host) 3:33:51 PM
interesting question, bri, i think you are right.
Esoterica (host) 3:34:19 PM
aw yes planet of the apes, david
Brian D 3:36:03 PM
It may have been a totally diff song... hmmm.. don't know tons about Bruce. But I've heard Badlands and it does not sound like the song you played. And the lyrics did not seem to match
Esoterica (host) 3:37:19 PM
i am going to explore diff version when i am off the show, thx for mentioning
Ossy Hyouka 3:44:46 PM
Hello Es, on this sci-fi space gray afternoon. Thinking of Apollo 13
Brian D 3:44:48 PM
"Nebraska" the song is the one about Starkweather according to searches. That makes sense. The song played today sounded like a track from Nebraska lp
Esoterica (host) 3:45:49 PM
hi, os!! yes that could be a good soundtrack to explore. isn't it grey and chilly out there today? funny antmosphere
Esoterica (host) 3:46:13 PM
aha! bri, thanks for clarifying, yes that makes perfect sense.
Brian D 3:49:00 PM
Yeah... that Darkness.. album is all full band rocking stuff i think
David Shortell 3:51:24 PM
It's incredible that "Midnight Cowboy" was rated X.
Esoterica (host) 3:51:40 PM
that's marilyn as miss caswell in this scene
Brian D 3:54:05 PM
Auf deutsch ja!
Esoterica (host) 3:54:23 PM

David Shortell 3:56:38 PM
I first heard “Heroes” in the bleak German film “Christiane F. ”
Brian D 3:58:16 PM

Esoterica (host) 3:59:30 PM
ha, br!
Esoterica (host) 3:59:33 PM

David Shortell 3:59:57 PM
Just as good as “A Fish Called Wanda” was the subsequent “Fierce Creatures”--not exactly a sequel but featuring several of the same actors.
Esoterica (host) 4:00:04 PM
oh wow, i tried to see christiane f. but it is not really available, bleak for sure.
Esoterica (host) 4:00:24 PM
oh, cool, david, i haven't seen it.
David Shortell 4:01:43 PM
I forgot this was in "JoJo Rabbit". I saw Arthur sing it a few times.
Brian D 4:03:43 PM
It's about time to watch Fish Called Wanda again. And Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Love those two.
Jon Solomon 4:04:09 PM
When I was 15, my parents and I did a six week film series at The New School. Each week they would show a movie before it came out and the professor would talk to a couple people from the movie. One class was a screening of A Fish Called Wanda and the guests were Michael Palin and John Cleese!
Jon Solomon 4:04:17 PM
I went up to them during the break because it was unlikely I'd ever have another chance to say something to either but I was basically speechless.
Esoterica (host) 4:06:42 PM
what????!!!, jon! that is amazing
Colin 4:07:27 PM
I just tuned in, has there been any chatter about that film Rockers, 1978? about the daily life of a drummer in (I think) burning spear and his side hustle distributing records with his new motor bike.
Jon Solomon 4:07:30 PM
(The guests were a surprise until day of.)
Esoterica (host) 4:08:41 PM
hey colin! no I haven't seen that film. maybe i need to! I recall it playing the midnight movies when i was in high school
Esoterica (host) 4:09:01 PM
that would be a cool addition, colin
Colin 4:09:14 PM
also, I may have never seen fish called wanda.... need to remedy that for sure.
Ossy Hyouka 4:09:35 PM
Older school movies I love: Sound of Music and Oklahoma
Esoterica (host) 4:10:26 PM
oh i love those, too, os! what would you like to hear...?
Esoterica (host) 4:10:40 PM
oh it is funny, colin AFCW
Colin 4:11:02 PM
Rockers is still a good watch, even with its paper thin plot. I was just reading it was originally set to be a documentary but developed in to a film during production..
Colin 4:11:51 PM
lots of live late 70's roots reagree and studio sessions of the actual performers of the era
David Shortell 4:11:57 PM
@Brian: I discovered that “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” was a superior remake of a tepid comedy called “Bedtime Story”. Marlon Brando played Freddy, David Niven played Lawrence, Shirley Jones played Janet and Dody Goodman played Fanny Eubanks.
Rob from Maryland 4:12:22 PM
Hello from someone who hasn't seen a movie in a theater in many years
ROFFLESTOMP 4:12:46 PM
@Rob, lol
Esoterica (host) 4:12:56 PM
Key change!
Esoterica (host) 4:13:05 PM
haha rob
Brian D 4:13:33 PM
Great movie theater memory here. High Anxiety. Saw this and also Harold and Maude around the same time. High Anxiety when it came out. Harold and Maude when it was showing again years later. Both at the Newtown Theater.
Esoterica (host) 4:14:54 PM
high anxiety, lesser known mel brooks, perhaps. but a gem.
Esoterica (host) 4:15:16 PM
although i think everyone knows everything about mel brooks!
Jon Solomon 4:15:30 PM
High Anxiety, definitely a movie I did not "get" when I was little until I had seen more of the films it was referencing.
Brian D 4:15:49 PM
Mel Brooks still with us! Most of the primary co stars are gone
Esoterica (host) 4:16:38 PM
yes he is, bri!
Brian D 4:17:30 PM
Yeah great tribute to Hitchcock. Some older relative clued me in on that about High Anxiety.
ROFFLESTOMP 4:19:49 PM
Mel Brooks, the 2000 year old man and still chuggin' along.
Brian D 4:20:01 PM
I'm reading now that Hitchcock sent Mel a case of champagne after he watched High Anxiety! Way to go Alfred!
Esoterica (host) 4:20:25 PM
my parents took me to see High Anxiety in junior high, but hey took me to all the movies, i bet i was slightly confused, too, jon, but enjoyed it nonetheless
Ossy Hyouka 4:22:14 PM
Sorry for the late response Es, maybe any song from Sound of Music, preferably "Something Good and Going On 17"
Esoterica (host) 4:23:07 PM
you got it!
David Shortell 4:38:59 PM
Both of the GG Allin performances I saw at the Fast Lane were fairly long. No police showed up.
Esoterica (host) 4:41:23 PM
hmm, david, maybe some hyperbole?
Brian D 4:42:57 PM
Lois teaching piano.. you are [hhmmfff hmmfff] going on [hmmff hmmff]... Can't remember Meg's age
Ossy Hyouka 4:46:08 PM
Lisiel Von Trapp is a 60s charm, too bad Rolf was too evil for her, in his "career". Sound of Music has endless memorable songs!
Esoterica (host) 4:48:11 PM
true, true, os!
Ossy Hyouka 4:50:51 PM
Climb Every Mountain is another third best of mine! I also recall one Oscars night a few years back, they comically did a reference of The Von Trapp family escaping the theater from "the soldiers", when one of them said "They're Gone!"
David Shortell 4:51:59 PM
Which "Carousel" song is controversial?
Esoterica (host) 4:55:25 PM
not any song, david, but the daughter says is it possible to get hit by someone and not to feel it and that gets answered yes by her mother.
Esoterica (host) 4:57:49 PM
but i cry when i watch this film, for sure.
Esoterica (host) 4:58:24 PM
