| U. Srinivas Uyyala Thyagaraja The Magic Fingers of Mandolin U. Srinivas Oriental Records 1993 U. Srinivas (28 February 1969 - 19 September 2014) was a child prodigy. He was the first musician to use the electric mandolin in Carnatic music. He modified the electric western instrument, using five single strings instead of the traditional four doubled strings to suit the Carnatic pitch, raga system, and especially "gamakas", or nuanced oscillations. He developing a phenomenal style of playing entirely his own, and astonishingly, on an instrument that had never been played in the rigorous and difficult Carnatic style before. “uyyAla-lUgavayya” is in Raga Neelambari. |

| Ram Narayan Raag - Multani Akashvani Sangeet - Volume 2 All India Radio 2008 Ram Narayan was born in Mewar, near Udaipur on 25 December 1927. The sarangi had been limited to being an accompanying instrument for vocalists, but Narayan showed his own talent and came to the foreground. Singers complained that he was too assertive. He popularized the bowed instrument sarangi as a solo concert instrument in Hindustani classical music, beginning his solo career in 1956. This was originally broadcast on All India Radio on 11 March 1979. Mahadeo Indorkar accompanies on tabla. |

| Mehdi Hassan Aake Sajadah Nasheen Mehdi Hassan EMI Pakistan 1980 Mehdi Hassan (18 July 1927 – 13 June 2012) was born in the village "Luna" in present day Rajasthan. His initial training was in dhrupad singing from his father Azeem Khan and uncle Ismail Khan. He is one of the greatest and most influential figures in the history of ghazal singing. The ghazal is a form of amatory poem or ode. There is a wide spectrum of presentation styles, but Mehdi Hassan sings them at the classical end, where the music is analogous to a thumri, but with more emphasis on the Urdu lyrics. In concert recordings, after a particularly poignant lyric, you can hear the audience reaction. |
