The reason the terrible global influenza pandemic of 1918-1920 was unjustly named "Spanish Flu": At its onset Europe was still fighting The Great War (World War 1). The combatant nations were quite secretive about events in their lands. But Spain, which remained neutral, was open about the influenza epidemic and allowed reporting on it. Thus it seemed as if it was the first site. Hence "The Spanish Flu" though it had emerged in many other lands, including the USA
