Actually I am lying supine in a room, because that way my cats will let me use my computer

I am currently walking in a giant room but I shall be sitting in a short while

well tonight we're all at birdland for the next eight minutes or so

we do technically have an in-studio way to replicate lucier's piece

say more about this "replication"

there's a fader on the board that plays back the (delayed) fm stream

normally you're supposed to route that through your cue headphones

but if you put *that* on air, what'll happen is it'll create a feedback loop

has anyone at wprb done this?

but the crazy thing is I think because it has such a long delay, it doesn't create feedback like waving a mic at a speaker

oh yes

instead it's this very controlled looping

AND because it going through the signal chain is lossy

what ends up happening is resonance and specific frequencies end up reinforcing each other

granted, these aren't the resonances of any room, so it's not a perfect replication of I Am Sitting in A Room, but it sounds damn close

that's really cool--like you're hearing the impedance of radio instead of the geometry of the room

this is my very favorite song <3

i am sitting in a room is such a great piece on its own merits but I love how it raises a minor question about the distinction between performed and recorded music

and what it means to have a "definitive" recording of a piece/composition

Rateyourmusic.com aggregates say Music For 18 Musicians is the greatest classical album of all time but that's not because Reich is the greatest composer of all time it's because Beethoven never made any records.

I Am Sitting In A Room is so personal and soul-specific in it's design and recording that it raises the question of if it could EVER be performed better.
