Yeah, lately I've been waking up at like 11am-1pm on Tuesdays since I usually have to stay up late to reset to the night shift schedule. I took off tomorrow though so not today

(if I wake up too early, id have to take a nap later in the evening)

@rosasolis, no worries, I meant to tell you about this last night: A Fork-tailed Flycatcher (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fork-tailed_flycatcher), a species found from Mexico to Argentina, has been in DC since Saturday.

Birds from the southern part of its range, i.e. Argentina, migrate north after breeding, i.e. now. Sometimes they overshoot and end up in the US, like this bird

ooh precious, stately bird!! i love its tail, do they have a distinctive song?? i hope hes enjoying his stay

This group of flycatchers doesn't have a song as such. "In general, they have a dry, buzzy call, and a weak "tic-note" while in flight."

I saw it Saturday morning and Sunday morning. I think I heard it call, but between the light rain, all the birders talking, and the somewhat similar Eastern Kingbirds making similar noises, ??

oh interesting! i could imagine it got drowned out among all that ambience.. out of curiosity ive begun looking at sites around nj that are ideal for birdwatching

@rosasolis -- I loved our epic hang-outs both in Northampton and in NYC. And I always think of this time of year as sort of "Supreme Dicks Season"... @Roffle -- "Dues accrues interest in it's way" Sage words and extremely well-said! I'll have to quote you -- with necessary attribution -- soon and as frequently as I can! <3

@roffle and there might be more glimpses of subs in this week's forenoons! but its a secret.. and @teresa likewise! i still remember getting their album "the emotional plague" and playing it on drives all throughout april and may a few years back :))

HURRAH for a week of rosasolis forenoon glimpses!!! I LOVE the transition time between the spring and summer schedules (also between the fall and spring schedules... heck! It's all good all the time! I <3 WPRB!!!

@Teresa, If you can remember the smells, that link in the chain has a special weight. @rosasolis, I love musical chairs DJ time. :)

I count on the usual times, but love the randoms.

i also enjoy switching around at the end of the seasons, its fun to see new ways to dj or emotions to explore on the air <3

I notice you folks will often stay true to the theme, and that adds a nice askew.

@rosasolis, wrt "out of curiosity ive begun looking at sites around nj that are ideal for birdwatching" ... you will eventually end up in and near Cape May, which can be full of birders on weekends in September and October. Don't ask me how I know ;-)

Hey Rob, lot of swamps in Jersey. I thought Blue Herons were exotic, but not in NJ, they just looked real cool to a kid.

New Jersey does have swamps! And Great Blue Herons nest in them. And are almost dinosaur-esque compared to, say, cardinals and crows

The Ocean City NJ visitor center has a ton of nesting herons and ibises. If you can make it on a Friday afternoon, there is a guided for pay 'walk' to see them https://njaudubon.org/venue/ocean-city-welcome-center/

Good morning, RobMD! @Roffle -- Same. I might be wrong about this but perhaps Great Blue Herons are more numerous now than when we were younger, sort of like red-tail hawks? They're much more numerous out here in Central and Eastern MA than in Western MA where I grew up, certainly; since Central/Eastern MA is also marshier (I think?) than Western MA?

Or, you could go on a weekend and refer to the information on that web page

Teresa, it could be that Great Blue Herons are more numerous now! I don't know one way or the other at least for the DC area. I am sure though that GBH is more common in eastern Mass because of more marshes and flatter terrain

Interestingly, in the last couple of years, the birds in my mother's Northampton, MA backyard have become more diverse, with birds that are more often associated with the more southern tier of the East Coast.

@rosasolis, yw and i hope you get awesome photos. I should go there, the White Ibises that nest at the OC NJ VC have only started in the last 10 years or so. Prior to that the species was pretty unusual in the state. Another southern species that's moved north

@teresa do you go out to bird watch as well? and @rob ooh white ibises!! honestly the only "exotic" bird ive seen nearby was when i went to central park and saw the mandarin duck lol

@Teresa, we have that also in Maryland. The flatter, lower elevation coastal plain has more marshes as well as a higher number of southern plants & birds. Lower elevation & being closer to the ocean = warmer temperatures, so that southern animals and plants can survive better

I saw a lot of Peking Duck on Canal St.

Oh yeah, I remember reading about the Mandarin Duck! Every once in a long while there is one in Maryland/DC

@rosasolis -- I wish I did but I'm just a passive and casual observing in and around my own environs. Isn't that Mandarin duck spectacular though? Prospect Park also has a lovely little pond with lots of interesting water fowl, year-round! Can't remember its name though ... I'll get back to you. (-: What a treat to hear you and chat with many favorite WPRB compatriots this a.m.! Incredible show as usual, rosasolis!
