Only there for and a half with two college tours crammed in there before heading to Boston, but it'd be nice to meet up if there's time!

@Mr. Mont - I get the impression that Kaua'i is maybe less commercial? Is that accurate? I'd been all over Maui, so Oahu was a real change, having a big city. I love Maui, but would love to compare it to Kaua'i! Annnnywhere in Hawaii is fine by me! Got a friend living on a farm on the big island too, one of these days I should visit him!

It's the whole vibe there, not just the Mardi Gras partying, but all people and the communal feeling, public art and love of music, and they really fund their public school music programs well because they know how important it is!

What precip we do get is usually a semi-frozen/semi-corrosive slurry, covering rocks and sand and gravel and shoes and needles and underwear and little bottles of Fireball and hubcaps and roadkill and all sorts of other shit laying in the roadside. When that all dries out, the slush is gone, but all that other crap is still out there, usually migrating onto the part of the street that I’m using , and collecting in any number of brand new potholes

I always had to announce what I was giving up for Lent. I was cheeky and tried to declare I was giving up things I secretly (or not so secretly) did not like

@Randy Marthins - I was already vegetarian! Much to my mom's annoyance, I went fully vegetarian at 15, remained so until 35.

Wow, lizbot, I did the same around that age, but lasted around 6 months. Pretty good for me back then.

@Randy Marthins - I tried being vegetarian at 12, but wasn't willing to cook all my own meals then. At 15, when I fully committed to it, my mom told me she would not be altering her menu for me, so I got good at cooking my own meals. The joke was on her, however, because just a few years later my brother began dating and then married his wife, who was Hindu and vegetarian since birth, so suddenly my mom had to offer more veggie options at family get-togethers!

@John Coffey - I was strictly veggie 20 years, and vegan 10 of those years, but after my kid was born, I developed some pretty challenging food allergies, including to soy and legumes, so I now eat poultry! I remember really resisting it at first!

@Randy Marthins - My husband's mom was vegetarian for a couple years, so he ate vegetarian mostly then by default. When I was vegetarian, he used to get a chicken cheese steak for dinner for himself on Thursday nights while I was at the station!

Upstairs at The Khyber, my friend, a former WPRB DJ who is a massive Jojo/Modern Lovers fan, was DJing, and I tried to talk him into going up there, but he wanted fresh air since it was a very hot night and sweltering in the Khyber! (To be fair, he asked for the AC to be turned off and then got too hot!)

Been in southeast PA all my life. But travelled to lots of places in the southwest I thought had a great vibe. Boulder in the 90s before it got commercial; Taos; Flagstaff. But I think the big island of Hawai'i is where I want to end up.

@0x7EA Roffle / @Gerard Donaghy - I like the four seasons here in the Mid-Atlantic...but actually getting a real spring or fall is a crapshoot! My uncle grew up in Philly and Jersey and moved to Washington state a long time ago. Said he missed the seasons. My mom used to make him regional Philly food care packages.

@Mr. Mont - I loved Taos. Made it to Northern Arizona on a southwest roadtrip around 2017, but stayed in Williams instead of Flagstaff when visiting the Grand Canyon. Next time I'd pick Flagstaff! NOt much in Williams!

It was mostly a warm spring for Summer, and Wet winters. Fall was a nice idea, but the Birch tree pop.

@Lizbot True! I would miss hoagies, soft pretzels and scrapple. In PA, we have the (mis)fortune of living in the snack food capital of the world. More chip and pretzel factories here than anywhere else. I'd miss my Wise potato chips too.

@Mr. Mont - My friend who lives on the big island is from Philly originally and moved to Hawai'i in his 30s. He's been there nearly 20 years and loves it. The co-op farm he works on was partially destroyed by that volcanic eruption several years ago. Occupational hazard of farming on the Big Island!

True! Looking for real estate, you have to pay attention to what lava zone you're in! Can't say that in many places on Earth.

It's sad that when I visit Philly, all I really eagerly anticipate is the food. The west coast tries, but they just can't land hoagies, steak sandwiches, bagels, pizza.

Cheesesteaks are a special order item. lol

@Gerard Donaghy - Oh i was downright distraught at what L.A. tried to pass off as a hoagie, and I could not find a satisfactory bagel. Maybe it's better now, I haven't been in a few years. Pizza was sad. On the OTHER hand, I'd happily take some West Coast burritos!

There is a food cart in Portland that has Amarosso Rolls air freighted to them every day. A steak sandwich costs $15, but totally worth it.

@ Liz Homer Flynn's daughter alluded to her father's illness on Instagram. I wasn't gonna go but if they reschedule Eskimo tour in a close venue to Philly I'll go. The Residents documentary from 10 years ago basically pulled the curtain from what fans already knew.

@lizbot- yes- Last time I was in Philly I got a burrito somewhere near the Italian Market and it was just apalling.

@Gerard Donaghy - oh man, that's so funny. I have a friend who lives directly across from the Amorosso roll factory and the constant intense roll smell becomes oppressive! She's at the point where she can't even smell it anymore, but I sure can!

@Gerard Donaghy - I lived in a very Mexican neighborhood of South Philly for a while years ago, but the food just is a different focus from the West Coast mexican food. I do love El Jarocho on S. 13th Street (at Ellsworth) in South Philly. Good Huevos al Jarocho!

@Mr. Mont - The lava zones are no joke in Hawaii, and drastically affect insurance rates!

My mom was a Philly girl, but my dad is Mexican, so I guess I had the best of both worlds? When grandmom visited, she would fry up corn tortillas for tacos and make her own salsa. I still make them that way. To this day, I can't eat those awful prefab taco shells.

Taco's are a buck and a half on the west coast or were. I got 3 for 15 dollars and it was some kind of Island country taco.

@Mr. Mont - I hate the prefab tortillas and those hard taco shells. Best tortillas I ever had in the states were from a little place in Tuscon. People lined up just for the tortillas, baked fresh all day. Best I had anywhere was in Mexico from my daughter's friend's grandmom!

@Ossy - Making me hungry! I love in San Francisco how they melt a mild provolone-type cheese into the inside of the tortilla!

@Lizbot Just a totally different experience. You wouldn't think the tortilla would make a difference but it does. The smell of corn tortillas frying in a pan with a little oil is one of my favorite smells.

@0x7EA Roffle - Tacos can be so great, or so bad! I had some good ones when I went to Austin for a wedding about 10 years ago. I made it my mission to visit as many well-reviewed taco trucks and restaurants during that trip! The only name I remember is Porchy's, which is better known and has a few locations. It was good, but there were better ones there

@0x7EA Roffle - One Philly burrito place I miss is Salsalito on South Street. Nowhere near as good as the west coast burritos or southwest, but they were better than most Philly burritos. I have better luck finding good non-burrito or taco mexican fare in Philly than those items. I still dream of the best Mission burrito I ever had in San Francisco
