The Velvet Underground & Nico European Son
The Velvet Underground & Nico (45th Anniversary / Super Deluxe Edition) Polydor 1967
Dedicated to Lou Reed's prof at Syracuse, Delmore Schwartz. Sterling Morrison said: Everyone thinks it’s because the song is thematically appropriate: “You killed your European son/you spit on those under 21”. Incidentally that may be true because Delmore was the son of Jewish emigres and a great poet, who was never accepted, but the real reason is that it has only two stanzas of lyrics and a long instrumental break. Delmore thought rock and roll lyrics were the worst things he’d ever heard in his life; he despised songs with words. As this was our big instrumental outing on the album we dedicated it to him. (genius).

Rob from Maryland 🦀 3:12:56 PM
Hi! Hopefully you won't get snow tonight? Or else you'll have to play Reeves's "The Blizzard" (or Camera Obscura's version)

And hi Esoterica and everyone
Esoterica (host) 3:13:12 PM
yes! maybe i will anyway:)

thanks bud, and hi!
Lester Wiggs 3:29:36 PM
Shoot. I missed the Lalo Schifrin.
Esoterica (host) 3:30:20 PM
hey there lalo, i may have another lalo up y sleeve lol
Esoterica (host) 3:30:25 PM
lester!
Esoterica (host) 3:30:33 PM
can't believe i called you lalo
Lester Wiggs 3:31:41 PM
and Can! I only learned of that band when they were included in a movie I really liked- based on a book, Inherent Vice. Great soundtrack.
Lester Wiggs 3:32:11 PM
well at least you didn't call me Lola.
Esoterica (host) 3:32:15 PM
sure, i know inherent vice. can is good for the soul.
Lester Wiggs 3:34:03 PM
I know the Mannix theme, love that, I will have to look and see what other work he did. Its cool when you can get commisions to write for movies and TV, but as a composer, does doing that rust your soul? Probably some commentary out there on the topic.
Esoterica (host) 3:34:44 PM
i am sure thhta there is mixed bag. but he was celebrated for sure.
Esoterica (host) 3:34:51 PM
*that
Lester Wiggs 3:34:58 PM
Pynchon. Polymath kind of fellow.
Amy Lee 3:34:58 PM
Hello! Listened last night but didn't enter the chat.
Esoterica (host) 3:35:29 PM
hey amy!
Esoterica (host) 3:35:38 PM
sweet, thx for listening
Amy Lee 3:37:30 PM
Was too busy writing down all the great 2025 I need to check out from your playlist.
Esoterica (host) 3:38:08 PM
i will post the playlist on FB too, but yes the website is a great place to check it out.
G Jax 3:39:54 PM
The riff in the Wire tune is Little Queen by Heart. I think they both came out the exact same time though.
Esoterica (host) 3:41:07 PM
interesting, G Jax and hi!
Esoterica (host) 3:41:19 PM
now i have to relisten to little queen
Lester Wiggs 3:42:37 PM
I had never heard of Delmore Schwatz till now. Wasn't I fascinated to discover that Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson became a couple. Heart goes out to Laurie, first her dog dies, then Lou dies. I only know Wire from a Warner Bros sampler I had. Next up- Gang of Four? lol
G Jax 3:43:33 PM
Hi 'terica. I've been clicked in all day. Happy to have you in my digitaria I hope you have a great show. Is that how it goes?
Lester Wiggs 3:44:19 PM
@G lol
Esoterica (host) 3:44:52 PM
yes!
Esoterica (host) 3:45:19 PM
i love gang of four, lester.
G Jax 3:47:30 PM
The Zombies we're a hell of a lot better than "she's not there"
Lester Wiggs 3:49:02 PM
I missed that.. Who was the famous folklorist?
Esoterica (host) 3:51:27 PM
Joan Shelley collaborates with a great musician Jake Xerxes Fussell, whose father is a folklorist.
Lester Wiggs 3:52:03 PM
In the auto parts section of the yellow pages, last listing was 'Zombies Body Removal' Towing company.

Esoterica (host) 3:52:24 PM
kooky, lester
Lester Wiggs 3:52:32 PM
thnks. Just so it wasn't Henry Glassey.
G Jax 3:53:15 PM
Not enough babies being named Xerxes these days
Esoterica (host) 3:53:42 PM
i went to the folklore department and studied under robert st. george who studied under glassie
Esoterica (host) 3:53:58 PM
why not glassie?
Esoterica (host) 3:54:01 PM
@lesterr
Esoterica (host) 3:54:05 PM
lester
Esoterica (host) 3:54:15 PM
so true, G Jax
Lester Wiggs 3:55:15 PM
srry misspelling. Glassie is quite well regarded.
G Jax 3:55:19 PM
Xerxes. That's what I need my baby as soon as I learn how to pronounce it.
Esoterica (host) 3:55:24 PM
yes he is
Esoterica (host) 3:56:11 PM
i am guessing with xerxes and the hard c pronunciation
Lester Wiggs 3:56:34 PM
Well- Jax, the reason is who gets naming rights? Xerxes was on my fav list. Sarah thanks her mother for persevering.
Lester Wiggs 3:58:44 PM
Sarah's mother was a 'folklore' major at U of P when Glassie was there. Thats the only reason I know anything about the topic.
Esoterica (host) 4:00:14 PM
cool, i went to penn for folklore, too!
G Jax 4:00:39 PM
Well we got no kids. But our animals have cool names. Well, some of them are actually human names. Let's see we've got Jackie Treehorn, Christopher, and Philthy.. which are all human names. And of course, Patches the calico cat, where we were purposely going generic
Lester Wiggs 4:01:54 PM
I keep finding one degree of separation. Star Slate Codex wrote about this.
G Jax 4:02:00 PM
Philthy as in Philthy Animal Taylor
Amy Lee 4:02:13 PM
Over the years of owning & being involved w/var animal orgs, you're provided a nice outlet for nam
Esoterica (host) 4:03:04 PM
love the names, G Jax!
Lester Wiggs 4:03:05 PM
@Jax- naming is important. We use name as a wedge to find our way into the world that will present itself after we have left this corporeal plane.
G Jax 4:03:32 PM
Yeah Amy i'm also involved heavily with animal rescue and there's some really terrible names. The rescues come up with.
G Jax 4:04:05 PM
I particularly hate naming animals after football players.
G Jax 4:04:53 PM
Actually my dog Christopher came with that name for the rescue which I thought was a great name and it fits him perfect
Lester Wiggs 4:05:10 PM
Cat names. We got CatCat, Artimus, Watts, (named for the great cigarette smoker) and of course Spin. Short for Spinoza.
Esoterica (host) 4:05:21 PM
we've had two rescue, Moose and Dolly Sue and we just kept those names and they seem to fit them.
Esoterica (host) 4:05:44 PM
but i think giving them names that you come up wit is great, too.
Lester Wiggs 4:05:57 PM
My neighbor has a boxer canine he named Cassius.
Amy Lee 4:06:29 PM
And every b/w cat does not need to be named oreo.
Esoterica (host) 4:07:02 PM
i do not mind cassius
Esoterica (host) 4:07:08 PM
right amy haha
Lester Wiggs 4:07:55 PM
My mothers cat has that exact name. Oreo. Now apologize.
G Jax 4:08:37 PM
My dad drove me past Cassius Clays house when I was a little kid. He lived for a very short time in my neighborhood. Well, not my neighborhood, but my town
Lester Wiggs 4:09:12 PM
She's a little older. ? Do you know what she worries about? If I pass, will some one take care of my cat?
G Jax 4:09:31 PM
my brother has a dog named Oreo. Actually, he's the Office dog where I work.
Esoterica (host) 4:09:39 PM
oh no haha
Tony Escargot 4:10:22 PM
what a set! thank you DJ Esoterica. can I make a request? https://teddygreenway.bandcamp.com/track/das-all-i-need
Bud Burroughs 4:10:35 PM
My cats are Sunny and Cherry. I sometimes think I'll just name my next set of animals something like "Steve" or "Colleen"
Lester Wiggs 4:10:54 PM
I slipped into an astral plane while listening. What were we talking about again?
Esoterica (host) 4:11:58 PM
lol
Esoterica (host) 4:12:26 PM
howdy, tony!
Esoterica (host) 4:12:31 PM
sure, i will check it out
Tony Escargot 4:13:05 PM
yeehaw
G Jax 4:13:21 PM
Me and my wife already have the next name picked out for the next dog we adopted. Paul Stanley, but only if he's NOT a poodle. That would be too obvious.
Esoterica (host) 4:13:25 PM
and thanks!
Lester Wiggs 4:13:27 PM
Joe Namath is an intact male cat I feed. I expect all the cats next generation to be great q backs.
Mike Tropiano 4:14:56 PM
Just tuned in a welcome surprise!. Looking over the playlist...the usual bang-up job. Kudos!
Lester Wiggs 4:14:59 PM
does this relate to the track make your pussey do the dog?
Esoterica (host) 4:15:05 PM
thx mike!
Esoterica (host) 4:15:34 PM
this is cool stuff, tony
G Jax 4:16:11 PM
Actually, two of the animals I mentioned Philthy and Patches are TNR-ed ferals. But honestly, they are like our indoor pets so I count them as that. Get Joe Namath fixed already!!!
Amy Lee 4:16:33 PM
Our male tuxedo cat is a very plump boy, looks like a 20's gangster, so we call him Georgie No-Neck.
G Jax 4:17:23 PM
Georgie, no neck I like that. One of our cast that we had years ago.. we used to call Vinny the chin
Roffle 0x7EA 4:18:21 PM
I have a rescue spider. No security deposit, no feeding, not litter box, no picking up poop. The perfect pet. :)
Roffle 0x7EA 4:18:27 PM

Roffle. Our spiders are named Evan and Gregg
Lester Wiggs 4:20:58 PM
Just kidding Jax. But there is a young female here. My downstairs neighbor is a kind person. She feeds all the wildlife. I have tried to explain why one should not do this.
Tony Escargot 4:21:17 PM
I agree!
Lester Wiggs 4:21:46 PM
No Idea where my house spider went. The only thing worse than naming your spiders is counting them.
Roffle 0x7EA 4:22:15 PM
Raccoons will hold events in your yard if you feed them.
Tony Escargot 4:22:33 PM
flipper has the best logo
Rob from Maryland 🦀 4:22:58 PM
Tony Snail, yeah, it's generic
Rob from Maryland 🦀 4:23:15 PM
@Lester, or counting on them
G Jax 4:23:30 PM
Wildlife shows up where we feed our ferals. I'll chase the raccoons but anything else is welcome. I absolutely love our possums. Skunks are fine too. We have a pretty almost all white one named Zsa Zsa
Roffle 0x7EA 4:23:31 PM
I let spiders be in my house. It's just a local jumping spider. Not an exotic. lol
Esoterica (host) 4:26:19 PM
true, tony
Lester Wiggs 4:28:15 PM
I got a Coon Hound. I have had dogs for years, mostly by accident. But this Coon hound has the strongest prey drive of any animal I have ever kept company with.

I remember you mentioning your coon hound the other day Lester. I think you mentioned Peaveys too. Peaveys and Coon Hounds. That's an awesome combo.
Lester Wiggs 4:33:13 PM
They are able to put one side of their brain asleep. The other one keeps swimming.
G Jax 4:34:37 PM
'Peaveys and Coon Hounds' should've been the name of a Skynyrd album
Tony Escargot 4:35:31 PM
no problem! dig it
