AIR Volume 6 T-Series 1997

Born in 1895 in Agra, died in 1962, ranks among the most prominent musicians of the Agra Gharana. When the old "dhrupad" style of Hindustani music gave rise to the "khayal" style, this led to individualized styles and eventually the different "gharanas" (schools or houses of musical styles). The Agra gharana retains more of the dhrupad origins than most other gharanas. Vilayat Hussain Khan also explored uncommon ragas.

Originally broadcast by AIR on 26 March 1960. His son Yunus Hussain Khan provides vocal support.

Karen Swaine 11:13:04 AM
that reminded me of the group in India in the film Latcho Drom, a film I adore.
Karen Swaine 11:14:13 AM
ummm I was referring to the Sindhi Music Emnsemble.... and btw, good morning everyone.
Kerrofflestomp 11:16:55 AM
I thought it said Surf Music from Sindh. Had to do a double take.
Kerrofflestomp 11:17:14 AM
Good mornings!
Sangeet Team (host) 11:17:38 AM
Good morning, Karen S. Sometimes film songs 'borrow' from traditional folk songs - saves them the trouble of composing
Sangeet Team (host) 11:18:41 AM
Good morning, Roffle. Surf music from Sindh? An undeveloped potential for hit songs
Kerrofflestomp 11:19:14 AM
New market.
Kerrofflestomp 11:23:11 AM
Well, I can't think of a better person with a platform to launch such an untapped market. :)
Sangeet Team (host) 11:24:26 AM
🏄
Karen Swaine 11:39:25 AM
but "Latcho Drom" is not a typical "film" - it's a documentary - no scenario, no story, but it moves from east (India) to west (Spain) documenting the music that arose in northern India (Romani): Latcho Drom ("safe journey") is a 1993 French film directed and written by Tony Gatlif. The movie is about the Romani people's journey from north-west India..." and I just discovered that my DVD is missing... I may have loaned it... I now have to buy another copy.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:42:50 AM
sounds like a fascinating documentary. That explains the folk music
Karen Swaine 11:43:32 AM
more info for those who haven't seen Latcho Drom: "Gatlif traveled to a dozen countries-including India, Egypt,Turkey, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, France, and Spain - to film the superlative singers, dancers, and musicians whose lives are performance, and whose stage is the landscape they roam."
Christine 𓅊 𓃕 𓃹 11:46:34 AM
Great info, thanks @Karen✨️
Karen Swaine 11:48:04 AM
if I weren't a Jew I'd think I was born a Romani... my grandma Rose looked and behaved like a "gypsy" (tsk, not supposed to use that term) I wanted to study ethnomusicology.. but in fact listening is what I do best, lol.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:58:05 AM
Thanks for listening and keeping me company in the chat. I'll be continuing on (with different music) until 3:00.
Christine 𓅊 𓃕 𓃹 11:59:01 AM
Cheers, Dave! 🫖 Thanks for the transcendent music.
Christine 𓅊 𓃕 𓃹 12:00:04 PM

Karen Swaine 12:00:12 PM
