Macumba is an African-derived religion, popular in Brazil. "Bat" is actually referring to Batman! An element of Tropicalia involves mixing Brazilian culture with American and European culture (e.g. the batman) with a heaping dose of irony.

Arnaldo Baptista of Os Mutantes on lead vocals. Written by Caetano Veloso. Also covered by Gal Costa. "Baby" explores themes of materialism and societal expectations in Brazil, using playful and repetitive lyrics to convey a sense of longing and connection. It reflects both a satire of American consumerism and an embrace of modernity during a transformative period in Brazilian culture

Recorded in England, while Veloso was in an exile imposed by the Brazilian military dictatorship for being subversive. Tom Zé (Antônio José Santana Martins) is one of the lesser known members of the Tropicalismo movement, but a key one. After the peak of the Tropicália period, Zé went into relative obscurity. Remaining true to the experimental and Dada impulses of Tropicália, Zé has been noted for both his unorthodox approach to melody and instrumentation, employing various objects as instruments such as the typewriter, and he has collaborated with many concrete poets, like Augusto de Campos, and employed concrete techniques in his lyrics.

The asa-branca ("white wing") of the title is the picazuro pigeon. With its departure the desolation of the parched sertão (the arid backcountry) is complete, and the protagonist of the song, unable to make a living, must leave the sertão and his lady-love Rosinha. The song closes with his promise to return.

Now gonna get into some truly trippy early tape-splicing psychedelic meanderings with Gal Costa
Marcus Haupt 7:44:25 PM
There was a scandal back in the early 2000's when Gilberto Gil was caught smoking a joint on Ipanema beach
Marcus Haupt 7:44:35 PM
He ws minister of culture at the time
Lizbot (host) 7:46:20 PM
@Marcus Haupt - Did you see "Ainda Estou Aqui "/"I'm Still Here" last year? So good, so sad! Some tropicalia turns up on the soundtrack
Lizbot (host) 7:47:21 PM
@Marcus Haupt - I heard Gilberto Gil became Minister of Culture in the 90s/2000s, but I didn't know about the scandal! He probably laughed it off!
Marcus Haupt 7:48:37 PM
I haven't seen any Brazilian films since I moved back to the States
jimbooooo 7:48:38 PM

Marcus Haupt 7:50:12 PM
It was a picture taken of him hiding under a blanket toking up so nothing could really be proven. It was funny
Lizbot (host) 7:52:00 PM
@Marcus Haupt - True story, based on her memoir, of a mother and activist Eunice Paiva coping with the forced disappearance of her husband, the dissident politician Rubens Paiva, during the military dictatorship. Actor cast to play Rubens, Selton Mello, looks exactly like him. Great film
Marcus Haupt 7:52:07 PM
Asa Branca!
Lizbot (host) 7:52:23 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - haha, careful there!
Lizbot (host) 7:52:39 PM

Lizbot (host) 7:55:26 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - Bird Content Alert! THis song is about a mournful bird, the picazuro pigeon!
Lizbot (host) 7:55:47 PM
@Marcus Haupt - Oh wow! I knew they mention the desert in the song, but I didn't know that!
Marcus Haupt 7:56:25 PM
It's about people having to leave the farm because of drought and moving to the city for work and missing home
Marcus Haupt 7:56:53 PM
When the white dove returns so will the rain and they can go home again

Lizbot (host) 8:03:35 PM
@Marcus Haupt - There's an Irish song by Paddy Reilly called Fields of Athenry about a man in prison for stealing to feed his family watching the seabirds out his window, and he sings about missing his wife. Kinda similar vibe to Asa Branca.
Lizbot (host) 8:03:48 PM
Thanks, TAndy: Monthly Doner🥙!
