Yay! Make a Rising!

Jesse Moynihan of Make a Rising was one of the earliest storyboarders / writers / character creators for the Cartoon Network show AdventureTime. His house had some of my favorite West Philly house shows, Avant Gentleman’s Lodge. When he moved to LA for Adventure Time, he’d never worked on TV before, and the show hadn’t debuted yet, so it was all a big gamble that paid off. Before that he had an excellent and very long running comic called Forming

omg no way! adventure time was one of my favorites as a kid, there was a lot of good music in it

Hi Zach! Make a Rising is great! I’m a little biased as a lot of my friends were in that band,’but I legit really like their music. Also their shows always had crazy visuals, like Jesse and his brother Justin inside a homemade giant glowing inflatable box that inflated as a song progressed. One time after a show a group of us drove around Philly with giant insect-like balloon sculptures tied to the roof of the car. Of course those were made use of in the show

@Lizbot, I think house shows are just such a different level and the Porch Shows in West Philly was the coolest part of that district..

@Kerrofflestomp - Porch Fest is great, though a relatively newer development in WP shows. I never miss it unless the weather is truly lousy!

@Kerrofflestomp - So many unfinished spooky old Victorian basements hosted great house shows of my early adulthood - Danger Danger House, Haunted Cream Egg, Avant Gentleman’s Lodge, The Catbox, Stalag 13, many more! You gotta love houses with names!

we have an annual october porchfest in lambertville for the last few years, lots of different local talent, we put on a pretty good show for a town of 4000 people

@Hog, man I hear ya. I'm 6'4" and a phrenologist would have a field day considering the head bumps that come with altitude.

that's why I don't go to GA shows with short friends. Guys I can just stand in the back and no one will be mad at me for blocking them, y'all go mosh for a spot in the front

@Zach - I’ve never been to Lambertville’s Porchfest, but in additon to West Philly’s, I’ve gotten to Collingswood’s, Mt Airy and Roxborough’s. All are great! WP’s is the most crowded by far though!

This year the lead guitarist was playing slide guitar with her wizard staff of baby doll arms, yes thats a real sentence it was incredible

@p4tti - yes, there’s WPPM 106.5 and G Town radio! Back in the early 2000s there was also Radio Volta in West Philly, which is now defunct. I did a show there for a bit! It operated out of an old church

@DJ Hog - I just saw Laraaji this past weekend at a church on 13th st in Philly. It was part of that Ambient Church series that started in Brooklyn and the concert was in celebration of the 45th anniversary of Laraaji with Brian Eno producing “Ambient 3”. Really transcendent show! I’ve seen him perform four times now, but all the other times were outdoors

i'm so jealous! wish i could see him live

@DJ Hog - saw him twice play in the Pine Barrens in Whitesbog Village at dusk! And once at Glenn Foerd. All amazing shows

i saw the microphones in a church in maine, the show was so loud you could feel the pews shaking hahaha

@DJ Hog - He’s still touring for Ambient 3 anniversary tour, but he already played Philly, NYC and Baltimore, so no other shows nearby soon, but he is still pretty active. Since he’s from Philly, he still plays shows here semi-regularly

@DJ Hog - oh god, I can almost feel the pain in my eardrums of that microphones show! I saw them at First Unitarian Church years ago and it was loooud and reverberant. But I think the loudest thing I saw in recent years was Zvi

Zvi is Ron Varod, yes. Saw him opening for a different artist I think was there for. Blew my eardrums out! Was in a relatively small space - a studio is Germantown

@p4tti (chef) - Ambient Church is very worthwhile. I recommend getting on their mailing list. The visuals are fairly toned down but definitely add to the experience; and they choose very beautiful churches to project onto. I like Klip Collective’s projections for more hyper music
