I imagine this thing that just ended was the radio and not our phones being weird?

Pat. Tyler. Hello.

Hello Jon
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 5:18:47 PM
I did not expect to be playing this song this week but I saw Kurt Vile cover it on Monday night at Best Show 25 and here we are.

Brian Kijewski 5:24:58 PM
Hey Jon! Hey chat! Wow that Lemonheads track was a blast from the past. First song I heard by them. On the radio growing up in the 90's when I was 9.
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 5:26:51 PM
That's intense, Pat. First (and only?) time I saw The Lemonheads I was so excited and they were terrible. HP Zinker opened / ruled.
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 5:27:05 PM
Hey, Brian! I didn't know that song so well until this week, which is wild.
Teresa Peacock 5:27:55 PM
Hello Jon & Friends! This 'Lichens' piece makes a fine complement to the 'Neutral' noise piece on Pat's show earlier today! More meandering centrifugal dissonance is ALWAYS welcome chez moi! ❤️‍🔥
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 5:29:03 PM
Teresa! I rediscovered Lichens after the dude from Holy Mountain Records died and this song is named after a quote from the film The Holy Mountain.
Patrick Rapa 5:29:20 PM
sometimes i think about this tour evan dando did a while back for the re-release of Baby I'm Bored. it was a small venue and he promised to sign every copy sold. i picture him sitting there upstairs at the foundry signing the face of his estranged ex-wife over and over again
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 5:30:12 PM
Rough stuff.
Patrick Rapa 5:31:30 PM
i bet the thoughts in his head sounded a lot like "You Are Excrement, You Can Become Gold" from the album The Psychic Nature of Being by Lichens
Teresa Peacock 5:31:53 PM
The only time I've ever seen Evan Dando perform was not with the Lemonheads but as a cameo appearance at a 'Loser's Lounge' showcase back in the mid 90s. I can't even remember who was the artist being covered that night. It may have been J Mascis' birthday?
Patrick Rapa 5:31:58 PM
available now wherever 20 minute tracks are sold
Brian Kijewski 5:32:16 PM
It's a good song for sure, haven't heard in years. Lemonheads a band I need to explore more. I like the album Lick. Heard a couple new tunes from this year which sounded decent.
Patrick Rapa 5:33:34 PM
Theresa that sounds like fun
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 5:34:01 PM
The first three Lemonheads records were super formative to me.
Marcus Haupt 5:34:04 PM
I was in Boston when "Hate Your Friends" was released. He was very much a local hero in the Punk Rock scene
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 5:34:54 PM
My Hate Your Friends shirt has a dirt stain on it from making a diving catch at recess. I feel like I've typed this story before.
Patrick Rapa 5:35:17 PM
what did boston people say when he went acoustic?
Patrick Rapa 5:35:43 PM
Evan Dando's Reverse Dylan Heel Turn
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 5:35:49 PM
I think it was more Ben Deily leaving the band.

Patrick Rapa 5:37:20 PM

Teresa Peacock 5:37:44 PM
@Patrick -- It was! And Dando performed well and was a very amiable presence as I recall... @Marcus -- 'HYF' has such strong associations with my final semester as a Smith College student, back in '87
Patrick Rapa 5:38:57 PM
very cool
Marcus Haupt 5:39:12 PM
Teresa: I was at Tufts and on the air on WMFO. Never made it to Smith but went to a dance at Wellesley College once. That was an event
Patrick Rapa 5:40:17 PM
i first heard him/them in the Ray days and had to scour the used bins for the earlier stuff

@Marcus -- I bet! Those mixer dances were always so high tension, full of sexual desperation and drama! They were straight out of a(?)/that(?) Jonathan Richman & Modern Lovers song
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 5:44:30 PM
I have done a full 180 on this version of this song. I strongly disliked it the first time I heard it, I can admit.

"As the host of Today, a regional magazine programme on Thames Television in London, [Bill Grundy] gained national attention for an interview with the Sex Pistols in 1976, during which the band swore and traded insults with him on live television. The interview effectively destroyed Grundy's career, elevated the Sex Pistols to notoriety, and signalled the arrival of mainstream punk rock."

Bill Grundy's most infamous moment was very well re-created in that thoroughly underwhelming Pistol miniseries that I forgot I watched until now.
