Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:01:37 PM
Hi, Travis. Great! Pretend the weekend begins in 5 hours!
Christine 𓅓 12:02:33 PM
WHOA...it's Serenade to a Cuckoo on a WEDNESDAY!
Travis in Ganjarado 12:02:37 PM
Sounds like a plan, thanks for the go-ahead.
Christine 𓅓 12:02:50 PM
🎶 🐦 There's that theme song...
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:02:55 PM
Thanks for listening, Travis!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:03:17 PM
Hi Christine, how are you doing? Beautiful today, right?
Christine 𓅓 12:03:18 PM
Hi Jerry...thanks for subbing for Number 6 today
Christine 𓅓 12:03:38 PM
Superlative weather 🌤
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:03:38 PM
He and I go back a ways!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:05:17 PM
Time to get out there on your canoe!
Adamgoget 12:05:21 PM
Wait a minute what is going on
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:06:20 PM
I don't know what happened, Adam. I smelled some incense and the next thing I knew I was on the radio, don't know what happened!
Patrick White 12:07:48 PM
Greetings Jerry and listeners. Thanks for filling in for Johnny Callison
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:08:52 PM
My #1 fave, no one can ever replace him! I remember the home run in the all star game! Will never forget
Brian D 12:09:15 PM
Went down to the part for past Saturday's game. That was a great time
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:09:49 PM
Nice, Brian!
Patrick White 12:09:54 PM
If I hear another media talking head say unofficial end of summer I am going to transform into the Unabomber.
Brian D 12:11:06 PM
Amen. Summer ends on September 20 something. I have it dialed in that way. Makes sense to me just fine.
Patrick White 12:11:09 PM
They banned me from citizen banks park because I don’t spend enough money there. I think the homemade scorecard was the deal breaker.
Rob from Maryland 🦀 12:12:05 PM
Hi Jerry, Patrick, Brian D, Adamgoget, Christine, Travis
Brian D 12:12:06 PM
We're peakin... get the orange juice...
Rob from Maryland 🦀 12:13:05 PM
Fwiw, meteorological summer ends on August 31
Patrick White 12:14:38 PM
Jerry I remember buying those way cool punk and rock EPS at your shop. Did the jazz labels issue any of those
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:15:19 PM
The Phils are such a pleasure when everything is going well and they are hitting. Brian, what prompted you to go to the game?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:16:29 PM
Patrick, like myself, you don't want to pay more than 15 cents for a scorecard. Once again you have proven to be an innovator and a cheapskate.
Patrick White 12:16:37 PM
Hey Jerry that Milwaukee looks like a fun place to watch a game. A drunkards dream if I ever did see one .!!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:17:32 PM
Hi Rob, perfect weather for you. Any new birds move into your neighborhood?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:19:36 PM
In the 50s, jazz eps were plentiful. I accumulated a bunch when I had my store. Clifford Brown, Chico Hamilton, great stuff. I still treasure them.
Patrick White 12:21:03 PM
Great night for Birds last night Jerry. Orioles,Blue Jays and Cardinals all victorious
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:21:34 PM
And I went to college in Wisconsin, occasionally went into Milwaukee. A whole different culture. The bars received the same respect as the library. Considered a wholesome family place. Kids received beer mugs from their parents on their 16th birthday.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:22:22 PM
Pabst #1!!! Budweiser was way, way behind. Pabst and Old Golds.
Patrick White 12:22:31 PM
What made Milwaukee famous made a loser out of me
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:23:36 PM
Schlitz was always crappy
Patrick White 12:24:59 PM
The death of Jerry Lees cousin the Reverend Jimmy Swaggart surprisingly got little notice or attention. He was an 80s icon of the religious con men genre. Entertaining even though you knew he was a scammer
Rob from Maryland 🦀 12:26:03 PM
No new birds in my immediate neighborhood, Jerry. But a few minutes away somebody spotted a Golden-winged Warbler (https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/608879122 not my photo) and I zoomed over there and saw it! I hadn't seen one in 8 years
Travis in Ganjarado 12:26:07 PM
What abour "Rhinelander, fresh as Wisconsin's Northwoods" ?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:26:18 PM
I way preferred Reverend Ike!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:27:20 PM
Wow Rob, you must have been fast! Where is the native habitat during the summer?
Patrick White 12:27:51 PM
Reverend Ike’s church still standing on North Broad Street . They have a new con called ticketing fees, service fees, processing fees and building restoration fees. PTL indeed!!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:28:22 PM
Travis, excellent beer knowledge!!! I also used to drink a delicious beer called Special Export made by Heilmanns
Travis in Ganjarado 12:29:56 PM
Ha, yeah I remember Special Export too. Also Extra Gold made by Coors
Rob from Maryland 🦀 12:30:09 PM
Jerry, breeding range is MA to MN south to the mountains of NC and TN. It winters in Central America and n.w. South America
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:31:50 PM
Travis, were you living in Wisconsin?
Patrick White 12:32:15 PM
Rob I saw some groovy birds at Eastern Neck Wild refuge last week. Near Rock Hall Md
Rob from Maryland 🦀 12:33:32 PM
@Patrick, nice! What were some of them?
Travis in Ganjarado 12:33:55 PM
I grew up in Indiana. Rhinelander was $6-7 for a case of returnable bottles that we could use to bottle our own and had a nice sturdy box. Old Milwaukee and Milwaukee's Best were always a go-to, and tons of Old Style when I lived in CHicago.
Patrick White 12:34:11 PM
Sorry Rob I am not much of an orthonoligist.
Travis in Ganjarado 12:34:44 PM
Birds and Beers! Cheers!
Christine 𓅓 12:37:51 PM
I'm just an amateur birdwatcher, but I did get a change to visit the Cornell Ornithology Lab in Ithaca last week when I was on vacation.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:38:09 PM
Nothing better than the midwest, Travis! What great memories you have conjured up!
Brian D 12:38:39 PM
Sierra collaboration Oktoberfest just poured. Green salad, pulled pork w/bbq & Thai chili sauce combined, quinoa, couple pickle slices. And some great jazz!! A fine afternoon. Gotta get out for a walk later
Christine 𓅓 12:39:14 PM
Hi Rob, Patrick, Brian D, Adamgoget & Travis 👋
Travis in Ganjarado 12:39:31 PM
Fine indeed, Brian!
Brian D 12:40:12 PM
I remember Dad getting Rhinelander once in a while back in the day. He always mixed it up at the beer distributor. Had his faves but would try out something different every other trip or so
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:40:46 PM
Christine, I didn't realize that trip happened already. What beers did you drink, and how was Cooperstown? Wow.
Brian D 12:41:29 PM
Saw a couple of Cooperstown whisky offerings in the PA stores clearance deals. Lots of great discounts going on.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:42:54 PM
Brian, that just worked me up into a frenzy! Pulled Pork and Quinoa. There should be a name for that! That all would qualify for a "Last Meal"
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:43:18 PM
Add a powdered Jelly Donut and I'm good to go.
Christine 𓅓 12:43:39 PM
I never got to Cooperstown this trip, @Jerry. I stayed in the Ithaca area for an extra day. I still have yet to visit the Ommegang brewery
Travis in Ganjarado 12:44:09 PM
"24 elsinore please, i believe there will be no charge due to a mouse found in the bottle"
Brian D 12:44:15 PM
It were eazy too....open fridge, microwave, and a coupla shakes from bottles only actions needed
Brian D 12:46:33 PM
"Bob I've got that guy's hockey card all over my room! " Good ol Angus MacInnes the Gold Leader starred in Strange Brew, Atlantic City, Star Wars etc (RIP last year)
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:47:16 PM
Travis, Brian D, I have to investigate this 24 Elsinore thing!
Brian D 12:48:00 PM
You'll need a flux capacitor with the Hollywood Canadiana appended update
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:48:15 PM
Patrick, do you have any orthodontist jokes?
Patrick White 12:51:19 PM
Sorry Jerry I’ve given up comedy to become a televangelist
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:51:36 PM
Christine, what did you do in Ithaca?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:53:06 PM
Patrick, Reverend Ike or Father Divine?
Christine 𓅓 12:53:22 PM
@Patrick, lol
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:54:46 PM
Christine, Patrick could pull it off!
Christine 𓅓 12:55:33 PM
@Jerry, I spent a day at the Cornell Art musum and walking around the trails (Sapsucker Woods) surrounding the Cornell Lab, and time walking around the city,
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:56:19 PM
Sounds great.
Patrick White 12:56:29 PM
I always liked that Little Jimmy Jeter evangelist from Mary Hartman Mary Hartman
Christine 𓅓 12:56:52 PM
It's a very walkable city with many good restaurants. And three bookstores, an art house cinema, and Moosewood of course. I had lunch at Moosewood one day. Really nice city and friendly people.
Brian D 12:56:53 PM
Love Ithaca! Have not been in a while. Great town and area. Good scenery. Those gorges wow. Moosewood restaurant.
Brian D 12:57:12 PM
ha jinx
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:57:41 PM
Is that the famous Moosewood Healthy Restaurant with several books of their recipes?
Brian D 12:57:50 PM
Aye the very one Jerry
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:58:20 PM
I bet that was good. Is it still there?
Christine 𓅓 12:58:36 PM
@Brian, right? There's so much to see and do. I need to go back soon!
Brian D 12:59:38 PM
Last time we were there at Moosewood they had fish and maybe some other animal protein on the menu. I think Christine confirmed it is still there
Rob from Maryland 🦀 12:59:40 PM
No worries, Patrick
Christine 𓅓 1:00:20 PM
@Jerry, yes! That's the Moosewood Restaurant that opened in 1973. They've published several cookbooks that have become classics. Inside the restaurant there's a little area for merch. I had lunch there last week.
Rob from Maryland 🦀 1:00:26 PM
@Christine, very cool! We were up there about 17 years ago
Rob from Maryland 🦀 1:01:34 PM
@Christine, I was in Ithaca in the 70s too and I ate at Moosewood at least once
Christine 𓅓 1:01:47 PM
@Rob, I thought of you when visiting the Cornell Lab. Have you been there? This was my first visit to the lab and the trails.
Brian D 1:01:48 PM
We did a fall road trip in 2007 starting from (well here in PA) Alfred, NY over to Portland, ME area. Tried to stick to mostly smaller roads and towns. Really good time, eats, scenery, weather etc. Good time o year to see that part of country.
Christine 𓅓 1:03:12 PM
Love a good road trip. 🚗
Brian D 1:03:57 PM
My 8th birthday 1977 was the famous Grateful Dead show at Cornell at Barton Hall. A great tape that one. The "Betty Boards" - Betty Cantor-Jackson inner circle crew member who archived some of the best moments and had a great ear for a mix.
chef patti 1:12:13 PM
that Leon Thomas track was so cool!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:12:56 PM
Hi Patti, thanks for listening. Yep, it is a classic. He also did it with Pharoah Sanders.
Brian D 1:25:00 PM
Pete Cosey & Reggie Lucas shredding the guitars into other universi on that Mtume lp
Patrick White 1:36:27 PM
When I used to drive to Baltimore in the 80 s for Orioles games Mtume owned the local airwaves
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:37:21 PM
Absolutely, Brian. I don't even know. how you know!
Mike Constantine 1:37:32 PM
My civic duty is complete
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:37:37 PM
Patrick, absolutely
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:38:12 PM
Hey Mike, an important and surprising contribution you made!
Mike Constantine 1:38:45 PM
Someone had to do it.
Patrick White 1:40:52 PM
Mike your job was to get Will C. Back on the airwaves!!!!!
Mike Constantine 1:43:08 PM
Yep....I miss ole Rico
Patrick White 1:43:49 PM
Will C probably rocking a new Micah Parsons jersey
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:49:48 PM
Mike, how are you and early 70s soul music and r&b?
Mike Constantine 1:52:19 PM
Early 70's I was completely Prog and Glam. Soul came later.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:52:47 PM
wow! Did you have elevated shoes?
Patrick White 1:53:21 PM
Hey Jerry PRB turned down my polka show for the fall schedule. A bunch of Jimmy Sturr haters!!!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:53:47 PM
I can't believe it!
Mike Constantine 1:53:54 PM
Yes ...platform boots with rainbows on them. I looked llike Frakenstein
Mike Constantine 1:54:46 PM
They made me like 6'6".....my GF was 5'4"
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:55:42 PM
Have your girlfriends and wives converted to your musical tastes as you went through the changes?
Mike Constantine 1:57:01 PM
They pretty much all hated what I listened to
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:57:32 PM
Wow! What magic power did you posess?
Rob from Maryland 🦀 1:57:59 PM
Chau Jerry, I enjoyed these first 2 hours, but alas I have to go. Thanks for jazz. Until the next time!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:58:45 PM
Thanks very much, Rob. I am always appreciative of when you listen! Have a good evening!
Mike Constantine 1:59:12 PM
Nothing to it...I had good drugs and a hot car.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:59:54 PM
I think you are still using that formula.
Mike Constantine 2:00:18 PM
Ha!!!!!....shhhhhhh
Mike Constantine 2:01:12 PM
Not one GF could sit through 4 sides of Tales From Topographic Oceans
Brian D 2:01:47 PM
Neither could Rick Wakeman
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:01:54 PM
Even with the STP you were into at the time?
Mike Constantine 2:01:59 PM
Then again....not many friends could either
Mike Constantine 2:02:20 PM
Rick could make it if he had a good curry!
Mike Constantine 2:02:59 PM
Ah yes...the great oil additive
Mike Constantine 2:05:11 PM
I do know this is War
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:06:41 PM
Yeah, a great one. You may know alot of these songs
Patrick White 2:06:59 PM
Probably one of the most bizarre concerts I attended was the remnants of WAR playing at one of those cheesy Delaware River clubs outdoors. They did a tribute to O. J.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:07:31 PM
No they di'int.
Mike Constantine 2:07:34 PM
I bought the first one with Burdon when it came out
Patrick White 2:08:09 PM
It was a Blatstein operation so I was glad to get home with my wallet intact
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:08:14 PM
You were hip!
Mike Constantine 2:08:35 PM
They were cheesy...The Yacht Club....The Beach Club
Brian D 2:08:59 PM
Slipping into the Darkness of the Fiyo on the Bayou... Like an Eagle
Patrick White 2:09:17 PM
It might have been Rock Lobster
Mike Constantine 2:10:51 PM
Ha!...right! At the time I was doing stuff for WYSP and many parties at those places
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:11:08 PM
Hahaha! Patrick, you are Zelig
Mike Constantine 2:11:42 PM
Ha!....Zellig!!!
Patrick White 2:11:50 PM
Shoutout to Philadelphia Delaware Riverfront the most wasted underutilized water based area on the East Coast. Corrupt and Contented indeed
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:11:53 PM
who knows this song by the intro
Mike Constantine 2:12:24 PM
I did not
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:13:34 PM
Some of my relatives came into the USA through the Philadelphia port. Where was it? Where are the remnants?
Mike Constantine 2:14:10 PM
Great question
Patrick White 2:14:45 PM
My paternal grandfather landed at Washington. Avenue
Mike Constantine 2:15:21 PM
We were so poor I think mine swam here
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:15:43 PM
Philadelphia was a big destination/port for Italians. Jews and Italians, right to Sough Philadelphia.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:17:22 PM
OK, Patrick, nice! Are there any remnants from "back in the day"? I have to read about the Philadelphia Port, why they stopped, etc.
Mike Constantine 2:19:03 PM
This is what Google says: Historically, significant immigration to Philadelphia occurred at the Washington Avenue Immigration Station from 1873 to 1915, where over one million immigrants entered the country
Mike Constantine 2:19:59 PM
Also says it was demolished
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:20:15 PM
Thanks, Mike. My peeps came over around 1910. Interesting! I wonder why
Mike Constantine 2:21:05 PM
Fathers side from Germany mid 1800's Mothers side around the same time from England
Mike Constantine 2:21:37 PM
I do like this one a lot
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:23:48 PM
It's a goodie!
Patrick White 2:29:11 PM
Probably destroyed by the Nativists
Patrick White 2:30:25 PM
A fierce battle between 1972 and 1973 for greatest radio year
Mike Constantine 2:31:58 PM
There are a few things left : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Avenue_Immigration_Station
Patrick White 2:34:13 PM
Celebrating my 50 th year of ignoring the Jaws movie .Probably one of the few Americans who never saw it. We should never normalize Shark hate.
Mike Constantine 2:35:23 PM
Saw it when it came out and that was that
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:35:23 PM
Good for you, Patrick. You never went with the "flow"
Patrick White 2:36:16 PM
When someone asks what the TSOP was just play this
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:36:45 PM
Mike your battle between 1972 and 1973 is a good one, I can't speak for the rock of those two years.
Patrick White 2:36:59 PM
But I never missed an episode of Flipper
Mike Constantine 2:37:26 PM
An old friend, the late TJ Tindall played guitar on many TSOP recordings
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:37:38 PM
Patrick, do you or anyone else have a "favorite year" for music. I would be curious.
Mike Constantine 2:38:03 PM
Esoterica and I can speak of it!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:38:28 PM
Ha, Flipper. I wonder what his contract looked like at the time!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:38:50 PM
Is that a peak Esoterica year?
Mike Constantine 2:39:50 PM
We share a love of Mott the Hoople and T Rex
Patrick White 2:39:51 PM
It’s all subjective Jerry . I was 13 and 14 then . Wasn’t a cynic. Everything new and interesting. Had no idea what Walk on The Willd Side was about though. How did that clear the censors??
Mike Constantine 2:41:11 PM
I think they just had no idea what it meant.
Mike Constantine 2:41:44 PM
Both Dr John and ELP got away with Brain Salad Surgery
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:42:08 PM
I think that was it, no idea.
Mike Constantine 2:45:26 PM
Smooooooooth
Brian D 2:45:38 PM
Great show Jerry! I have to remember to clock in for work tomorrow it not being Friday and all....
Mike Constantine 2:46:04 PM
I never know what day it is
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:46:12 PM
Thank you, Brian. Thanks for the cool stuff you mentioned in the chat.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:47:21 PM
Mike, I think you were employing this song and your STP in your slick RX7 up and down 611
Mike Constantine 2:48:06 PM
A lot went on in that car.....
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:50:24 PM
Hahahaha. Some real characters came through there
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:51:37 PM
Thanks very much, everybody for listening, chatting, and being clever!
Mike Constantine 2:52:10 PM
Glad I could catch the last half
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:52:26 PM
The bulk of the last hour was 1970-1972
Mike Constantine 2:54:16 PM
I do remember some of these when I was poor and only had an AM radio
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:55:17 PM
How were you listening to Tales of Topographic Oceans, although that was later
Mike Constantine 2:55:21 PM
