Patrick White 12:14:54 PM
As an addendum to the last 3 weeks this weeks third hour will feature a tribute to Charles Manson including outtakes from Charlie’s Monkees tryout and his audiition tape for Terry Melcher.

Sorry to be tardy for the party 🎶 🐦
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:20:05 PM
Hi Christine, thanks for joining. I think you will like the incredible life of Sheila Jordan.
rick hallahan 12:22:30 PM
Jerry, I must say that I did not experience very much of Sheila Jordan in my listening experience, but I am very impressed by what I'm hearing now.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:28:42 PM
So unique, so special. Unfortunately I did not know her, but our friend Russ Woessner knew her for 40 years!
Russell Woessner 12:30:32 PM
For anyone interested in Sheila’s life, I recommend Ellen Johnson’s biography: https://www.allaboutjazz.com/news/jazz-child-a-portrait-of-sheila-jordan-biography-by-ellen-johnson-released-by-rowman-and-littlefield/
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:31:49 PM
Thanks, Russ
Russell Woessner 12:33:08 PM
I was lucky to know Sheila for 45 years. My wife and I met her in 1980.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:35:06 PM
You can't get any closer to Jazz than Sheila Jordan. That's amazing, Russ
Russell Woessner 12:36:41 PM
88.9 had a copy of Portrait of Sheila. We loved it. We checked the NYT listings every week but never saw a listing for Sheila. Then one day we saw that she was playing at club on 7th Ave. We called and reserved tickets and told them that we were coming from Philly. After the show we asked to meet Sheila and said we were the ones from Philly. Sheila came out and said “You came all the way from Philadelphia?” She gave us her phone number.
Christine 𓅓 12:41:08 PM
Thanks for the recommendation, @Russ. 📖
Christine 𓅓 12:41:45 PM
And excellent anecdote!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:43:13 PM
Russ, I can't believe no one stole that album. Righteous!
Russell Woessner 12:45:37 PM
We interviewed her in her apartment for a Women’s Day 3 hour show on 88.9. She sent us reel to reel tapes of her previous recordings (which I still have).
Christine 𓅓 12:48:06 PM
Great biographical information, @Jerry & @Russell.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:48:51 PM
Thanks, Christine. Her music was so great I feel like I knew her. But I never met her.
Christine 𓅓 12:49:25 PM
Like a lot of qualified creative artists, I wonder if Sheila suffered from imposter syndrome.
Danosaur🦖 12:49:48 PM
Hey, everybody! Happy Friday!
Danosaur🦖 12:50:49 PM
Has anyone seen the new Naked Gun movie with the scene where Pamela Anderson's character scat sings? Very funny.
Russell Woessner 12:51:03 PM
Sheila was a very kind and generous person. We asked her to do a benefit concert for 88.9. I did not want to rent a piano and I knew she had played bass & voice with Peter Ind & Steve Swallow. So I asked her if she would do a duet concert with Harvie Swartz. She agreed. I didn’t realize that she and Harvie had not played as a duo before, although they both played in Steve Kuhn’s group. Harvie was skeptical about sustaining an audience’s interest for a full concert.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:51:13 PM
Hi Danosaur. No, but I'm a fan!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:52:11 PM
Russ, you were a part of history right there, it's still hard to believe. You should have produced records!
Christine 𓅓 12:52:42 PM
Hey Danosaur! 🦖
Russell Woessner 12:53:51 PM
Sheila and Harvie worked for weeks to develop a program of duets. Based on the audience’s enthusiastic response (multiple encores), they decided to continue to perform as a duo. And the rest is history!
Patrick White 12:58:59 PM
Thanks Russ you truly are our minister of information. I do you remember what year Sheila played the Charlie Parker jazz festival
Russell Woessner 1:00:32 PM
We saw Sheila perform between 15 and 20 times. Four times in Philly, twice in San Francisco, once in Princeton, once in Baltimore, many times in Manhattan and Brooklyn. And once at William Patterson University in NJ. The only musician who rivals Sheila in terms of the number of times that I saw them perform is Sun Ra.
Danosaur🦖 1:00:33 PM
Oh, yeah! Love this song
Ears 1:00:36 PM
Hi all. It's an honor to lurk among you!
Danosaur🦖 1:01:10 PM
That bass!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:01:13 PM
Hi Ears, the honor is ours!
Danosaur🦖 1:03:19 PM
Boy, how good do you have to be to sustain a song with just your voice and a bass?!
rick hallahan 1:05:09 PM
Danosaur, you make an astute point!
Russell Woessner 1:06:22 PM
Patrick, I believe that was 2013.

Speaking of XPN Gordski they kneecapped another old guy. What a bunch of bloodless pharaohs!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:20:24 PM
Who is that, Patrick?
Christine 𓅓 1:20:35 PM
Oh no, @Patrick
Patrick White 1:25:55 PM
That nice Chuck Elliot fellow. Doesn’t Commandant Dye realize……..He’s old!!!
rick hallahan 1:30:48 PM
Nice to hear the great Mark Murphy!
Patrick White 1:36:43 PM
Enjoyed a free Joan Osborne concert in bucolic HADDON Heights . Last night. She did a lot of Bob Dylan music.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:43:17 PM
Cool, Rick!
Russell Woessner 1:43:36 PM
Thanks, Jerry.

Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:43:58 PM
What was the scene like there, Patrick? How did she sound/
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:45:10 PM
Christine, that black and white photo you liked of Sheila came from a post by Jane.
Christine 𓅓 1:45:19 PM
Good to hear @Patrick. I figured that storm on Wednesday would rain out the concert that day.
Christine 𓅓 1:45:30 PM
@Jerry, that's fantastic
Patrick White 1:46:25 PM
She sounded great. What a nice person . Audience somewhat somnolent due to the reschedule. Can you imagine a big timer like that have a rained out free show and then agree to do it the next night!!
Patrick White 1:47:37 PM
Happy 99th birthday to the late great sadly forgotten Philadelphia jazz singer Buddy Greco..
Christine 𓅓 1:47:55 PM
Wow @Patrick! I figured Joan's concert was rained out, and that was it. What a gift.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:47:55 PM
Get out of. here
Mike Constantine 1:48:32 PM
She took a lot of stick for If God Was One of Us but I find her quite talented
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:49:05 PM
Hey Mike. I LOVE her!
Patrick White 1:49:35 PM
And she has to appear in Woodstock night . Maybe it’s that Levon Helm barn place?
Mike Constantine 1:49:36 PM
Right??
Mike Constantine 1:51:06 PM
There's a Bethel Performing something or other there
Patrick White 1:51:42 PM
Her Dylan covers much better than what I was subjected to Tuesday in Gloucester. At the end of the Kenn Kweder show Michael Tearson got up and sang A Dylan song. I believe Junior would have sounded better
Christine 𓅓 1:51:57 PM
@Patrick, is Joan Osborne performing tonight at the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock? That's a cool place.
Mike Constantine 1:52:21 PM
Oh dear
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:53:48 PM
Junior is constantly working on his chops. In fact, we had lamb chops the other day!
rick hallahan 1:54:10 PM
This is a so cool tune, yes indeedy!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:55:00 PM
Haha! I forgot, did Horace Silver write this, Rick?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:55:22 PM
This song has your name all over it
Patrick White 1:55:49 PM
Christine looks like some place called COLONY.
Patrick White 1:56:39 PM
In the middle of Tearson singing I called Gloucester FD to report a dumpster fire.
Mike Constantine 1:57:04 PM
Can't imagine
rick hallahan 1:57:54 PM
Jerry, you stumped me on that one!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:58:51 PM
This is an absolutely tremendous versioin!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:59:10 PM

Patrick White 2:12:50 PM
My favorite Big Boss Man version is Nancy Sinatra singing to Phil Leotardo in the Sopranos
Danosaur🦖 2:14:02 PM
Great Leon Russell song
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:14:09 PM
Phil's hair was so thick that no air got to his scalp. But Nancy Sinatra may have made his hair stand
Patrick White 2:15:24 PM
Nancy Sinatra …whatever happened there!
