U. Srinivas Gajavadhana (Hamsavinodhini) Purandaradasa
Rama Sreerama Real World Records 1994
Uppalapu Srinivas (1969 – 2014) was a mandolin player in Carnatic classical music and composer. Rudraraju Subbaraju (disciple of Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar) taught U. Srinivas by singing, and U. Srinivas developed his phenomenal style of playing entirely his own, since mandolin had never been played in the rigorous and difficult Carnatic style before.

Srinivas started out on the acoustic mandolin, but neither the size nor plucking required of the acoustic mandolin was suited for long, sustained notes. He then switched to the electric mandolin, which was better suited for sustained notes and musical ornamentations.

Chilly grey morning here, glad for the positive vibes the music brings!
Sangeet Team (host) 9:24:23 AM
cloudy here, too. But temperatures are supposed to rise to the upper 80's by afternoon
Sangeet Team (host) 9:24:52 AM
a good morning to sip tea ☕️
Sangeet Team (host) 9:32:26 AM
pretty much every morning is a good one for tea sipping
Guelo <3 9:34:48 AM
I wonder if a cup of ‘good’ tea still costs less then any other beverage
Sangeet Team (host) 9:36:08 AM
a suppose it depends on where you purchase it
Sangeet Team (host) 9:36:53 AM
i can make a good cup of chai much cheaper than I can make a craft beer

Li Maria 10:23:53 AM
Good morning, Dave. Escaping the heat here in the mountainous heart of Mexico. Really enjoying your show. It's been a soothing counterbalance to American news
Li Maria 10:24:50 AM
My cousins here listen to the local 103.3 radio station, but it's all Mexican music :)
Sangeet Team (host) 10:26:10 AM
Good morning, Li Maria. I'm glad WPRB is able to provide some solace in these awful times
Li Maria 10:31:31 AM
The water music was especially interesting--don't think I'd heard it before
Sangeet Team (host) 10:32:46 AM
yeah, Jalatarang is uncommon, nearly extinct
Li Maria 10:35:14 AM
Wow! it's so beautiful
Karen Swaine 10:40:23 AM
this is so wonderful... have heard nothing like these last few selections. thank you! a nod to jazz, a nod to rap.. love it all!
Sangeet Team (host) 10:41:02 AM
glad you like it, Karen! Aruna Sairam is unique, and brings a lot of influences
Li Maria 10:42:57 AM
Karen took the words out of my mouth! This is so cool
TAndy 10:43:22 AM
The rhythm in her vocals was such a stand out for that song.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:46:24 AM
Aruna Sairam has also collaborated with Carnatic prog metal band Agam
Sangeet Team (host) 10:48:35 AM
and, yes, TAndy, the rhythm is the key part of a "Tillana" which are always lively
Li Maria 10:50:12 AM
More soothing music to help keep me from hyperventilating. Very nice
Sangeet Team (host) 10:50:43 AM
I hope your cousins in Mexico are not freaked out
Li Maria 10:51:33 AM
No--they live here full time. I'm really worried about the lack of checks on power in general
Sangeet Team (host) 10:52:35 AM
it's astounding how quickly everything collapsed here
Sangeet Team (host) 10:53:35 AM
and with such enthusiasm
Li Maria 10:54:36 AM
But of course they must be somewhat worried. Everyone has some family in the States. But yes--amazing the speed at which this is all happening
Sangeet Team (host) 10:58:13 AM
careful what you post - or you'll be 'taken for questioning'
Karen Swaine 10:58:47 AM
oh my that Bhajan (I will have to Google that, lol) from A Sacred Space was absolutely gorgeous.. just about put me into a trance . I will be searching for some of these old CDs...
Li Maria 10:58:58 AM
Ha--so true, Dave
Karen Swaine 11:01:02 AM
had a chat with a friend in Holland the other day -- it's really true that folks are not going to be coming to visit the states now.. and who can blame them.. we're living in a sad, frightening dark time.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:03:13 AM
yeah, such a shame, and pointless. One of my son's friends is a transgender woman and she just moved to Australia
Sangeet Team (host) 11:04:07 AM
the transgender community has been selected for particular punishment
Li Maria 11:05:15 AM
Yes, my transgender friends have been particularly stressed. I'm worried for their mental health as well as their physical safety
Sangeet Team (host) 11:06:17 AM
they have reason to fear. Hostility has been normalized and encouraged
Li Maria 11:09:39 AM
Such cruelty. Resentment has been simmering for a long time. i don't understand it
Li Maria 11:39:46 AM
Time for me to hit the road. Thanks, Dave, for the solace and the kind ear. Take care, everyone
Sangeet Team (host) 11:40:12 AM
thanks for keeping me company, Li Maria. Have a good day
Li Maria 11:40:44 AM
You, too!
Sangeet Team (host) 11:42:17 AM
It appears I mis-announced this violin piece. I corrected it in the playlist
Sangeet Team (host) 11:54:03 AM
technical problems with the CD
Sangeet Team (host) 11:54:37 AM
switched to Raga Behag
Sangeet Team (host) 11:59:38 AM
thanks, folks!
