Seitan on a Stick

My kid took this picture for her school photography club.
My first thought was "Wow, that's great! It almost looks like blood vessels."
My second thought was: "Is this a good time to talk about Norwegian Black Metal with a 13 year old?"

Refresh this page to see the most recently played songs. All are welcome to join the rest of WPRB's Wednesday Night Pit Crew in the chat. Everyone's cool there. Lots of crackin' wise, but no haters.

Social media is a black hole of bullshit and I've been much happier since I deleted Instagram, Twitter, etc. I've been finding Mastodon a totally refreshing change and encourage you to give it a shot. No ads, no algorithms, and no racist chowderheads. (I mean, I assume they're around, but Mastodon's policies are far more progressive than the "both sides" horseshit that Musk, Zuck, and their ilk insist upon, so they get booted pretty quickly.) Overall, I've found a diverse community of cool folks there who are interested in learning about and supporting one another's creative endeavors. I use the platform to talk about WPRB and community radio in general, but a lot of other things as well. You can find and follow me with this link.

But enough about that. Lots of great new records in the bins tonight. Thanks for hangin' out, we're here until 11 PM.

Well, well, well...Hello!
Commie Francis ☭ 8:05:35 PM
DEBARGE
Mike Lupica (host) 8:06:18 PM
In my memory, I swear they were called El DeBarge, which I guess would be "The The Barge"
Space Cowboy 8:06:53 PM
Funny
Jon Solomon 8:07:19 PM
El DeBarge is the singer for DeBarge.
Jon Solomon 8:07:32 PM
Eldra Patrick DeBarge.
Mike Lupica (host) 8:07:39 PM
Isn't that Debarge UK?
Jon Solomon 8:08:30 PM
I think they call barges "lorries."
Mike Lupica (host) 8:08:38 PM
3 pointer
Jon Solomon 8:09:26 PM
From the top of the key for 3 -- Villain!
Jon Solomon 8:10:14 PM
I keep forgetting to check out this Van Pelt record, so I am glad you're playing something from it Mike.
Mike Lupica (host) 8:11:49 PM
Only half-listened so far, but this song moved me big time. Sounds absolutely nothing like their old stuff, and given the 25-ish year break between them, I consider that a good thing.
Jon Solomon 8:13:05 PM
I think Jeff Zeigler recorded the record and it has a certain unexpected "Philly sound" to it.
Mike Lupica (host) 8:13:57 PM
I dunno who that is, but I'm glad to hear that Chris Leo's voice finally changed.
Space Cowboy 8:14:44 PM
Dude it's never a good time to talk to a 13 yes old about norwegian black metal
Mike Lupica (host) 8:15:32 PM
Space Cowboy, don't worry -- my good taste and tip-top parenting instincts prevailed.
Space Cowboy 8:16:13 PM
As I would have guessed
Mike Lupica (host) 8:18:05 PM
Modern Anatolian rock sounds on the deck presently. Terrified that I'm going to get a cease and desist email from Captain Ahab.
Ambrose Hughes 8:22:16 PM
Howdy Mike!
Mike Lupica (host) 8:22:35 PM
Welcome back, Ambrose!
Pete Trenham 8:24:22 PM
Here! What are we doing tonight?
Ambrose Hughes 8:24:39 PM
Thought I'd barge in!😉
Mike Lupica (host) 8:25:39 PM
Pete, no idea yet but I've brought a table saw, a sack of onions, three sticks of dynamite, and some HDMI cables.
Brian D 8:25:53 PM
YOYO!
Brian D 8:26:08 PM
Big thumbs up . All 5 of them
Mike Lupica (host) 8:26:37 PM
It's been a while since I've played this. Luckily remembered that it needed an FCC edit.
Kelly Nielsen 8:27:14 PM
Oh yeah! Loved The Art Ensemble track last week.
Space Cowboy 8:27:58 PM
Yeah this swings ...
Mike Lupica (host) 8:28:29 PM
Oh yeah, I DID play them last week! Different song, at least. (DJ wipes sweat from brow, walks quickly from booth...)
Brian D 8:29:48 PM
For more of this vibe, 2 GREAT comps: "Soul of a Nation; Afro-Centric Visions in the Age of Black Power" and "Soul of a Nation 2; Jazz is the Teacher, Funk is the Preacher ". No can lose

Kelly Nielsen 8:30:38 PM
Very different song but so great
Brian D 8:32:04 PM
This track leads off Vol 2 of Soul of a Nation
Mike Lupica (host) 8:32:33 PM
I know the comp you mean, Brian, and indeed, it's all killer/no filler.

Alan! Jimbo! Welcome.
Mike Lupica (host) 8:52:08 PM
Now please dress in these ceremonial robes, drink this wine out of a sheep's horn, and get old and die to the sound of this Flaming Fire song.
Alan Pasnyk 8:53:05 PM
Loved that Elton John Track...and commentary...
Pete Trenham 9:01:31 PM
Ibex Clones. Thumbs up!
Mike Lupica (host) 9:02:17 PM
Agree, Pete. Loved that one!
Mike Lupica (host) 9:04:05 PM
By the way, for those who enjoyed last week's self-indulgence, I think we will have another "Dead Moon O'Clock" later on in the show.
jimboo 9:05:10 PM
Does the Barge have all the requisite permits? NJ Water Supply Authority? D&R Canal Commission? Weights & Measures? Pre- and Post-Historic Preservation?
Ambrose Hughes 9:06:31 PM
THIS
Mike Lupica (host) 9:06:46 PM
No, but it is certified by the NJ Department of Rickety Staircases, and has been officially recognized by the International Consortium on the Shittiness Of Single Pane Glass Windows Commission.
Mike Lupica (host) 9:07:18 PM
Ambrose, I am in LOVE with this album. Wait for the kicker part... you can tell the collab he did with Circle last year made a lasting impression on him.
Mike Lupica (host) 9:07:39 PM
HERE. IT. COMES.
jimboo 9:09:10 PM
Dead Moon O'Clock is a full hour, RIGHT?
jimboo 9:10:01 PM
Ok, all permits appear to be in order.
Ambrose Hughes 9:10:24 PM
It's been gradually growing on me Mike, I think Circle toured with him throughout Europe last year!
Mike Lupica (host) 9:11:33 PM
So wish I'd seen that. Watching Circle videos on YouTube is a nasty habit I developed during lockdown. And I've seen them live (in person) twice.
Mike Lupica (host) 9:12:04 PM
Jimbo, WE SHALL SEE. I'm planning to milk this all the way through the next fundraiser.
jimboo 9:12:05 PM
I am up to my neck in Circle...I hope I never Finnish their catalogue.
Mike Lupica (host) 9:12:18 PM
Bad-um-pum.
Ambrose Hughes 9:12:25 PM
😳WOW!
Mike Lupica (host) 9:13:04 PM
If I had plastic elf ears, I would be wearing them right now.
Ambrose Hughes 9:13:09 PM

Ambrose Hughes 9:13:29 PM

jimboo 9:13:35 PM

jimboo 9:13:49 PM
Yeooo Bo!
Mike Lupica (host) 9:14:19 PM
Oh I hear it.
Ambrose Hughes 9:14:38 PM
@Mike you mean you don't own at least ONE pair!?!
Mike Lupica (host) 9:16:02 PM
Jimbo, some similarities to "Victim of Changes", for sure.
Mike Lupica (host) 9:16:15 PM
Jimbo, I'm sure my wife does. I can ask to borrow.

What's the name of the Moorcock book that everyone read in 8th grade?
Ambrose Hughes 9:17:31 PM
Um ...I was sick that year.
jimboo 9:17:46 PM
there must be a hawkwind/nik turner connection here
Mike Lupica (host) 9:18:28 PM
Very perceptive, Jimbo. Turner plays on that record!

Colin 9:22:32 PM
ambrose, you just triggered a memory of boy scout summer camp where we used to chant to other troops, 'there ain't no flies on us, there ain't no flies on us, there might be flies on some of you guys but there ain't no fliea on us"
jimboo 9:26:52 PM
did everyone survive Colin? Sounds very Lord of the Flies-ish

@Colin, Hello! 😝😝😝

Colin 9:31:38 PM

Colin 9:34:08 PM

Ambrose Hughes 9:43:48 PM
Mike! It's where you left your giant elf ears.
Dennnisons 9:44:09 PM
I never read Michael Moorcock, but the Stormbringer cover looks familiar.
Colin 9:45:11 PM

Kelly Nielsen 9:58:25 PM
Waaaaaay late but that Ibex Clone track was awesome
Mike Lupica (host) 9:59:08 PM
@Kelly, agree -- I dunno squat about 'em, but I'll be digging deeper into that record this week for sure.
Mike Lupica (host) 9:59:29 PM
Also, Toody is the coolest. Fight me IRL.
jimboo 10:00:08 PM
this sounds gooooood...did they remaster any of this?
Mike Lupica (host) 10:00:41 PM
Is it possible to remaster mud from dirt?
Ossy 10:00:55 PM

Mike Lupica (host) 10:10:00 PM
As I often say, if the music at the church I grew up going to had sounded like this, I might actually believe in god.
Ossy 10:15:12 PM
🌠⭐💫😁
Mike Lupica (host) 10:15:38 PM
I am humbled to say that I was fortunate enough to book an Alan Vega show in Brooklyn many years ago and can confirm that her 100% sounds like this all the time.
Mike Lupica (host) 10:15:48 PM
*he
Mike Lupica (host) 10:16:55 PM
He is (well, was) a walking Gene Vincent cover who's using 80% of what he's made of to keep Hell's hoardes locked behind the gates.
Ambrose Hughes 10:17:29 PM
WEIRD! As I read that my speakers just went on the blink!😳🤔
richard lyons :) 10:24:06 PM
Loving this Moss Icon!
jimboo 10:24:50 PM
in-deeed
Mike Lupica (host) 10:25:52 PM
Haven't listened to this in ages. Super weird to hear it again. I was the world's worst and least-committed hardcore kid, but even in hindsight, some of the stuff my generation kicked out under that banner was pretty righteous.
Mike Lupica (host) 10:26:56 PM
Or at least, headier than your garden variety moshathon gunk.
Mike Lupica (host) 10:28:06 PM
Also, jeez. The Van Pelt and Moss Icon in the same radio show. "Mike, 1995 is calling, says something about you being an asshole with a stupid haircut?"
Andrew Gruen 10:28:19 PM
Jonathan Vance was a different breed than every other hardcore singer
Alan Pasnyk 10:28:54 PM
"We are, as the private parts of the gods; they play with us!" - Black Adder
Mike Lupica (host) 10:31:24 PM
@Andrew, agree. Although I always considered Moss Icon sort of adjacent to Born Against, he really had a unique style that I think most of those ABC no RIO bands not-so-secretly envied.

Dennnisons 10:38:38 PM
Hitting bed, I was in a lousy mood today, but the Dead Moon set cheered me up. Thanks, Mike!
