@DSM - Yeah, it's reminding me of a particularly freeing drive up to Princeton from Philly in very early spring - on one of the first nice weekend days of the year - a couple years ago and I played a LOT of Go-Betweens the whole drive

The first time I heard "Queen Of Eyes" was on a Fastbacks album. I still like their version better than the original.

@Dennisons - I had a phase in high school of watching every movie I could get my hands on by certain actors/actresses I got really into, and Julie Christie was one of them. Another was Tom Courtenay, so you can imagine I watched "Billy Liar" a bunch of times! And I lost it when Yo La Tengo made the song "Tom Courtenay" and immediately mentioned Julie in the first line!

My Julie Christie obsession started with Billy Liar, then progressed to McCabe & Mrs. Miller, and because I loved mopey Thomas Hardy books as a teen, Far from the Madding Crowd was another favorite, but McCabe remains one of my all-time favorite movies

My friend Herbie, a former Philly resident who now lives in London, actually spotted Lawrence on the street in Islington and hesitated but did end up going up to him and thanking him for his music, and despite his prickly reputation, Lawrence seemed genuinely pleased

In regards to cheese, I saw my girlfriend for a few minutes in her building on campus, and she gave me 30lbs of cheese blocks with no explanation. She just waved and went back to her lab. Fucking Chinese New Year is way over my head.

Also, I loved hearing R.E.M. put in context of other artists like the Smiths and the Feelies--when I first got into them in the 90s, the IRS years felt sort of out-of-place from what was going on in music, but I loved it so much. It took a little while to find their contemporaries.
