McCaughan told Stereogum about the 7 inch: Perhaps because they are more traditionally “Superchunk”-sounding than the rest of the LP (“Everything Hurts” could be from Come Pick Me Up, and “Making a Break” has What a Time to Be Alive energy)? | Hazel Dickens & Alice Gerrard Long Black Veil N Pioneering Women of Bluegrass: The Definitive Edition Smithsonian Folkways Recordings 2022 "Long Black Veil" is a 1959 country ballad, written by Danny Dill and Marijohn Wilkin and originally recorded by Lefty Frizzell.
It is told from the point of view of a man falsely accused of murder and executed. He refuses to provide an alibi, since on the night of the murder he was having an extramarital affair with his best friend's wife, and would rather die and take their secret to his grave than admit the truth. The chorus describes the woman's mourning visits to his gravesite, wearing a long black veil and enduring a wailing wind.

Gordy) has distinguished himself as one of his generation’s preeminent interpreters of traditional (and not so traditional) “folk” songs, a practice which he approaches with a refreshingly unfussy lack of nostalgia and preciousness.

| Jake Xerxes Fussell The Golden Willow Tree Jake Xerxes Fussell N Good and Green Again Paradise of Bachelors 2022 The Golden Willow Tree Library of Congress AFS 3714 B. Collected by Alan Lomax and Helen Hartness Flanders. Informant/Performer Elmer George, North Montpelier, VT, 1939. Used by Aaron Copland. From the Library of Congress: Two years after the success of his first set of Old American Songs, Copland arranged a second set of American folk tunes for voice and piano. As he had done with the American debut of the first set of songs, Copland once again accompanied baritone William Warfield in the premiere performance of the sequel set on 24 July 1953. Copland later transcribed both sets of Old American Songs for performance by vocal soloist and orchestra, which were later arranged for chorus and piano and chorus and orchestra by Irving Fine and many others.
