quartet of Andrew Bernstein (saxophone/percussion), Max Eilbacher (bass/electronics), Owen Gardner (guitar), and Sam Haberman (drums) from Baltimore, Maryland. The band plays experimental music with elements of krautrock, post-punk, Appalachian and African musical traditions, polyrhythmia, arcane tunings and modular synthesis. The band uses the just intonation tuning system favored by avantgarde composers La Monte Young and James Tenney, so the musicians are playing hand-modified guitars with repositioned frets, re-tuned and customized by Gardner.

hello hello!
Lizbot (host) 5:03:46 PM
I just heard a crazy crashing noise below me, so I'm picturing that either my dog just knocked over the trashcan and is eating garbage, or some other shady thing is going on! No other humans are currently here. The thrill of live radio!
Number 6 5:04:28 PM

Number 6 5:06:59 PM
Hello all good citizens of WPRB!
Lizbot (host) 5:07:26 PM
@Number 6 - She LOVES the recycling bin especially - it's got her tasty empty (but still meaty-flavored) dog food cans in it!
Lizbot (host) 5:07:35 PM
Hi DSM!
Lee Chandler 5:07:36 PM
Given an option, I prefer to hear something than have the cats/dog stalk, growl & gaze at a wall I don’t hear sound coming from.

Hi Lee Chandler!
Lee Chandler 5:08:10 PM
Hope she’s ok.
Lizbot (host) 5:08:16 PM
@DSM - haha, my high school mascot was the BullDAWGS (spelled like that)
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 5:08:27 PM
And hello Lee
Lizbot (host) 5:08:36 PM
@Rob from Maryland - Note the name of today's episode
DSM 5:09:16 PM
Lol, that's a team I could have maybe gotten behind!
Lizbot (host) 5:10:27 PM
@Lee Chandler - The sequence of events was as follows: Dog suddenly whines in such a way she usually reserves for one of two scenarios: Scenario #1: It's her dinnertime and she is mad I haven't fed her yet (It's not her dinnertime for another hour, but she sometimes gets confused by these short days/early sunsets and thinks it's later than it is.
Lizbot (host) 5:11:33 PM
Scenario #2: She heard one of us pull into the driveway and start unlocking the front door, at which point she gets so excited and anxious, she whines urgently
Brian D 5:13:32 PM
Lizbot!
Lizbot (host) 5:13:35 PM
@DSM - Too many mandatory all-school pep rallies during the school day made me fairly resentful of The 'DAWGS, especially since I played soccer for the school but we only had pep rallies for boy's basketball and football. And also, I was forced to play "We Will Rock You" and "Another One Bites the Dust" on clarinet with the school band in the bleachers, and I like Queen, but not those two freakin songs I had to play a million times!
Lizbot (host) 5:13:46 PM
Hello Brian D!
Number 6 5:14:44 PM
My dog would always need to sit on the couch to look out the window. When I gave away the couch she would go nuts jumping around at any sound going on outside.
Lizbot (host) 5:14:50 PM
@Lee Chandler - I gazed down at her just before going on air and she looked up at me innocently, but I think she's up to something and I couldn't see the whole kitchen and didn't have time to go down there, so we'll see!!
Lizbot (host) 5:15:12 PM
Howzit goin', Brian D?
Lee Chandler 5:15:58 PM
Hello all!
Lizbot (host) 5:16:19 PM
@Number 6 - My mailman has been bribing my dog daily with a biscuit and she never used to freak out or bark at him, but NOW she does cuz she's jonesing for her newly-acquired mid-day biscuit fix
DSM 5:17:14 PM
Lizbot, understandable. Forced anything at that age will make one hate the dawg-gone thing!
Number 6 5:17:21 PM
Pavlov's dog syndrome!
Lizbot (host) 5:17:23 PM
It's amazing how many people randomly carry biscuits for dogs they don't know! SO many local businesses give her biscuits, and she has memorized each and every one and pulls us towards them until we go in - SNEAKY way to get more business!
DSM 5:18:30 PM
I wish the mailman would bring me a buttermilk biscuit everyday
Lee Chandler 5:20:21 PM
Do you have biscuits in reserve or does she just get the shakes the days he’s off?
Lizbot (host) 5:21:50 PM
@Lee Chandler - Oh, we have a reserve of biscuits, but now she's grown accustomed to MORE biscuits, and particularly the mid-day biscuit!
Lizbot (host) 5:22:32 PM
@DSM - mmm, okay that is sounding very good right now...OR a British style biscuit/cookie. I request a McVitties milk chocolate digestible!
Lizbot (host) 5:23:07 PM
@Number 6 - Yeah, for real! Everyone is re-training my dog with their bribes!
Lee Chandler 5:43:27 PM
You’re right about the Green Pajamas. I always like what I hear & note it, but never seek beyond that.
Lizbot (host) 5:43:50 PM
argh, slightly undershot that segue!
Lizbot (host) 5:44:34 PM
@Lee Chandler - Yeah, they're really solid. I bought that album back in '99 and never noticed them tour near Philly.
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 5:46:05 PM
@Lizbot, I just noticed the name of today's show. Why did you call it that?
Lizbot (host) 5:46:38 PM
@Rob - I always name my shows, so even when there isn't a theme, I just come up with whatever strikes me at that moment, and I've always liked that word!
Lee Chandler 5:47:26 PM
Rob from Maryland, waiting for todays notable person death report.
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 5:47:47 PM
@Lizbot, it's a cool word for sure. Have you ever heard or seen a whip-poor-will?
Lizbot (host) 5:49:24 PM
@Rob from Maryland - I am fairly certain I've heard them a bunch! My mom always points them out
Lizbot (host) 5:49:35 PM
@Rob - Or rather points out their call
Lizbot (host) 5:50:09 PM
@Lee Chandler - oof. Yeah, I was never a big Jeff Beck fan, so I'm leaving a tribute to him for others, but I know he was a big deal to many
Lizbot (host) 5:51:12 PM
That last track, My Perfect Cousin, is by a Northern Irish band, which reminds me to recommend the show Derry Girls for anyone who hasn't seen it here, esp. if you grew up around catholic nuns and Irish people like I did! A funny show with occasional drama.
Addie 🐍 🐍 Plum 5:52:42 PM
Hey fronds! Hope y’all are having a swell evening!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 5:54:56 PM
@Lizbot, how nice! One time a migrant whip-poor-will called outside my bedroom window a couple of times during the night. It was nice to hear one so close, but it was so freaking loud that it woke me up each time.

Lizbot (host) 6:01:53 PM
@Brian D - Truth! I first heard that track on WWOZ in New Orleans years ago!
Lizbot (host) 6:02:38 PM
@Addie - I'm glad to hear it! Yeah, it was a trying day for me and started out badly, but it turned around for me as soon as I hit the airwaves!
Lizbot (host) 6:03:13 PM
@Brian D - I toured WWOZ, an independent station like PRB, in NOLA and had a great talk with the DJs.

Lizbot (host) 6:22:23 PM

Number 6 6:23:08 PM
Yeh!! And I can't play for squat. LOL!
Number 6 6:23:49 PM
My mother is 96, so she can be excused.
Lizbot (host) 6:28:33 PM
@Number 6 - Wow! My parents are in their 80s and I regularly get calls from my mom asking me to get her stereo working, so I can relate!
Lizbot (host) 6:30:26 PM
DOG MYSTERY SOLVED
Number 6 6:31:51 PM
I just saw that Lisa Marie Presley suffered cardiac arrest. Condition unknown.:(
Lizbot (host) 6:32:22 PM
My husband just got home: I KNEW the dog was up to no good at the beginning of my show but I couldn't go down and check on her and I'm at the top of a spiral staircase, which she refuses to use (for good reason! She'd break herself on it) so I couldn't call her up here or check on her, but APPARENTLY she knocked over a bag that had some books and a tin of hot cocoa mix in it! THANKFULLY she managed to not pry open the tin!
Shut Up Wesley 6:34:06 PM
My big sister had a copy of Switched-On Bach (LP of course. We were kids) What a work that recording was. Synthesizers could only play one note at a time, so to record a chord they had to record each note of the chord separately. 🎹
Lizbot (host) 6:34:13 PM
@Number 6- Whoa! I believe she was JUST at the Golden Globes on Tuesday night! She was there because of that Baz Luhrmann Elvis movie getting nominated in some categories, I think best actor? I dunno, I am not a fan of Baz
Lizbot (host) 6:35:06 PM
@Wesley - Yeah, it's impressive as hell to this day, and even more so when you look at all Wendy had to do to make it! She is a pioneer!
Anne Lopez 6:35:19 PM
Hi Lizbot! I was digging the show of course and then heard this and said OH THIS IS tUnE-yArDs! Love them, thanks for playing
Anne Lopez 6:35:59 PM
also all the other stuff you're playing tonight, fantastic
Lizbot (host) 6:36:55 PM
@Wesley - I have friends who released collage music in the 70s where they had to splice the tape a zillion times with reconnect it. And now...Garage Band! Or Logic or whatever program can do that stuff so quickly! I still enjoy a good audio collage! I really liked the most recent Negativland album
Shut Up Wesley 6:37:33 PM
“ Lisa Marie Presley is in the Intensive Care Unit, on life support with a temporary pacemaker after suffering cardiac arrest ... sources with direct knowledge tell TMZ.”
Lizbot (host) 6:38:12 PM
Hello Anne! I'm glad you're enjoying it! Did you make it to that free outdoor tUnE-yArDs show at the Piazza in Northern Liberties in the early days of that group? It was epic
Brian D 6:38:29 PM
Negativland still got it. Some of their best those last couple
Lizbot (host) 6:39:38 PM
the arrangement during the chorus of this Happens All the Time song sounds 60s/70s Philly International Records/ soul influenced
Lizbot (host) 6:40:05 PM
@Brian D - for real! And I love what Mark is trying to do WRT anti-copyright / fair use
Lizbot (host) 6:40:21 PM
@Wesley - oh wow, that sounds very dire
Anne Lopez 6:40:26 PM
No, I wish! Didn't know about them then. Discovered in the last 2-3 years
Lizbot (host) 6:42:40 PM
@Anne Lopez - Such an ear-candy sound they have!
Lizbot (host) 6:43:02 PM
@Anne Lopez - definitely influenced by African polyrhythms
Anne Lopez 6:44:24 PM
@Lizbot completely agree, love the polyrhythms and vocal layering
Lizbot (host) 6:47:16 PM
@Anne - so expertly done and shimmery!
Brian D 6:48:21 PM

Lizbot (host) 6:50:14 PM

Brian D 6:53:39 PM
Ha! Doonyen rocks
Brian D 6:54:40 PM
First song I ever heard by them that Panda track. Hooked. I hear they really bring it live too
Shut Up Wesley 6:55:04 PM
@Lizbot - closest I ever got to something like the collages was splicing leader tape onto my reels of 1/4” tape. Back then cassettes were still only for answering machines - Dolby noise reduction was a few years away.
Lizbot (host) 6:56:18 PM
@Brian D - same!

Lizbot (host) 6:59:10 PM
@Wesley - I miss my old answering machine tapes! I only had an answering machine with a cassette tape in college and for the first half of my 20s, at which point it was pretty much all early cellphone digital voicemail, which sounded so much worse! I used to love recording my outgoing voicemail message on the tapes cuz you could play a song behind yr voice and it actually sounded pretty good. NOT so with the cell voicemail messages!
Lizbot (host) 6:59:16 PM
Hello Ossy!
Lizbot (host) 6:59:53 PM
@Wesley - I saved a some of my favorite voicemail cassettes for years, especially the ones with early messages from my husband from when we were first dating, but those are looooong gone!

@TAndy - You missed an earlier convo in this chat in the first half of the show today that your screen name reminds me of: Wesley brought up the possibility of building a furry computer at a Build a Bear workshop in response to my playing "Furry Computer 2" by Smoke Bellow. Could be a stuffed TAndy!
Lizbot (host) 7:32:21 PM

I feel like I'm inside a giant baroque music box when I listen to this
Lizbot (host) 7:37:15 PM
@Wes - it's the XTC/Sparks report!
Lizbot (host) 7:38:40 PM
@TAndy - I remember there used to be an exhibit of old computers dating from my childhood in the atrium of the now-closed Springboard Media on Chestnut St
Lizbot (host) 7:38:51 PM
@TAndy - And of course they had a TAndy
Lizbot (host) 7:39:02 PM
@TAndy - or rather, a Tandy!
Shut Up Wesley 7:39:15 PM
@TAndy - I’d guess whatever’s left of the Radio Shack company still owns the rights to the Tandy trademark.

🤖BÖT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lizbot (host) 7:42:16 PM
JIMBOOOOOOOOOOO
Shut Up Wesley 7:44:45 PM
@Lizbot - we didn’t own a copy of the Well Tempered Synthesizer. PS - I’d guess that album name might be an inside joke as early synthesizers were notoriously difficult to keep in tune!
Lizbot (host) 7:45:28 PM
@Wes / TAndy - The ultimate would be if you could find an old Tandy company jacket in a thrift market. Back when the Pennsauken Mart still existed, it had my favorite clothing store: it was nameless but we just called it The Work Clothes store and it was just used uniforms and work clothes, most still with their name tags, plus a bonus bin of old used name tags I LOVED digging through! I found such name tags as "Lead Man Handle" in that bin!
Lizbot (host) 7:46:30 PM
My favorite jacket of my 20s came from the work clothes store at the Pennsauken Mart: It was a Firestone Tires jacket with the name "Steve" on it and when I used to go to Madrid a lot to stay with a good friend who lived there, everyone called "Esssteve!!"
Lizbot (host) 7:46:47 PM
The comedian Jo Firestone should have that jacket!
TAndy 7:46:50 PM
I can't believe I never heard of the work clothes store, I would have filled my entire wardrobe full of those
jimboo 7:47:23 PM
Oooh I have a legit Moog synth made by Radio Shack/Realistic!
Rofflestomp 7:47:49 PM
Give me a thrift store and a pickup truck anyday. Pure joy!
jimboo 7:49:10 PM
Right on Roffle!
Lizbot (host) 7:49:37 PM
@TAndy - That place was SO much fun to visit! RIP The Mart! It had a giant sign outside that said "45 years strong and still going" and that sign looked at LEAST 40 years old when it closed in 2005/6ish. My husband got his first guitar here when he was 14
Lizbot (host) 7:50:03 PM
Hi Rofflestomp! The golden era of The Mart and the original Camden Village Thrift were great!
Rofflestomp 7:53:03 PM
Hi Lizbot! Hi folks! I want to do a US tour of thrift stores. The things I have seen while travaling totally justifies the concept.
Ossy Hyouka 7:53:56 PM

Lizbot (host) 7:58:17 PM
@Wesley - I miss my sweet stray turned housecat Puss Puss Decrotandru! I just found a 9 year old photo of him sleeping today

Lizbot (host) 7:59:12 PM
@Rofflestomp - that would be such an awesome roadtrip! You'd have to leave room enough in your car for all your findings!
