@DTO - Not gonna be super-literal. Although many of the songs today do mention the winter solstice, many do not but convey a wintery/cold/long night feeling, at least in my mind!

I was on the ferry from Victoria, Vancouver island to Vancouver on the mainland during the moment of the Summer stolstice and it went form Zero to Hippie in a heartbeat. Very cool.

The piano on that Settled Arrows song is so pretty. That's a Philly band whose members have cool solo projects as well

@Rofflestomp - Beautiful! I love that area. My uncle and cousins lives in the Pacific NW. Last time I was up that way was during the solar eclipse of August 2017, near the path of totality

@Rofflestomp - When I was a kid, we used to take those Washington ferries and we missed the last one outta Orcas Island and had to crash in a weird hippie commune that rented out beds because the only motel was booked solid. I got the worst flu of my teen years in that place, sleeping across from a woman who sounded like she was coughing up a lung. I ended up sleeping the second half of the night in the rental car, but the germs had already invaded me!

Lizbot, Sweet, I have yet to catch a totality. Bucket list item. I was in Vancouver for a Lunar eclipse with a blood red moon and of course the radio played Black-hole Sun. LOL It was just too good. I the Pacific NW.

@Rofflestomp - Yeah, that place had a "hot tub" that was just a mud pit

@Rofflestomp - The main thing I remember from that early 90s Pacific NW trip when I was in high school was being SO SICK on the ferries and lying down on their benches. Before I got sick, I was psyched to spot some orcas. I've heard that area's orca population has sadly dwindled drastically in recent years

Mud pit doesn’t sound too bad, I mean, considering other mediums it could have been.

OMG! lol Big nope and a pass for sure. If you ever get out to the islands again check out the docks. There are shrimp swimming around the piers!

A friend of mine live out there and once the ferry shuts down for the night your just stuck.

@Rofflestomp - For the summer 2017 eclipse we ended up in Portland, so NEAR the path of totality, but not completely in it. The roads were absolutely overrun with people driving south from Portland to be in the path of totality and hotels were full, gas stations in small towns ran out of gas, a buncha people got stranded! I remember being on the waterfront and then SECOND it ended, all those paper eclipse glasses were littering the ground everywhereQ

@Rofflestomp / Lee - During that same 90s Washington state/Oregon/Victoria/Vancouver trip we took a ferry to San Juan Island to learn about the most pointless war ever: The Pig War, and even visited the pig war fort. This is what happens on family vacations when your parents are both teachers!

I love Bainbridge Island's art museum, though. Hands down, best WA ferry island!

Traveling by ferryboat to an island where you have to be back at the dock by a certain time or else be stuck on the island all night adds a certain excitement. At least we thought so when we hiked around Isle au Haut that time (part of Acadia National Park only accessible by boat).

That is way sad about the glasses issue. I stayed on Drain Bramage Island when I fist moved up there. I love that ferry too!

Lizbot, Drain Bramage is the response to people who call the island Brain Damage Island, and there are a lot of them in Seattle proper. The view at sunset on the ferry is top shelf, and many musical ensemble folk will just play for a few trips. The best.

@Lee, I recommend visiting Isle au Haut to anyone who is in the area. Half of the island is Acadia National Park, and the other half is privately owned, but there is no hotel, services, etc.

Jon put a link up to the Little Drummer Boy on the home page and I clicked on it and had to back out. It's just so worth the wait.

@Christine - I love Acadia. My parents adore Maine and my uncle mike used to run a community theater in Belfast, ME, so we'd drive up there and stay with him and then go hiking. The most stranded we ever got in Maine was way up near Baxter State Park, out on a peninsula only accessible by canoe, after a lengthy hike, which was preceded by a drive up a logging road. We stayed at my dad's friend's electricity-less, plumbing-less cabin.When we tried to leave, we found our car smashed by vandals

@DSM - I was living in Bryn Mawr for school and I took the R5 a lot back then to get to shows. Stuart David and his wife Karen played one of the many shows I saw around that time that heavily featured loopers playing audio samples on stage!
