I have some small electric heaters on standby. At work we sometimes had delayed heat.

@number 6 - space heaters always flip my old house's breakers. They scare me, anyway- Always hear about those starting fires!

I never had a problem. I would always run them at half power. The newer ones should have a trip switch if they get knocked over.

@Number 6 - yeah, true! my old house has some old knob and tube wiring and those gas lamp hook-ups in the wall! Gas co says they're no longer supplied with gas, but that gives you an idea of the old spookiness of this house

@Number 6 - I do occasionally run a small newer space heater in my kid's room because the breaker doesn't flip in there. Back of the house (where I am) is colder. We had pipes freeze and burst back here once years ago. Insulated the hell outta those since then! Dumbly, though, some of those pipes just go into pure dirt with no crawlspace underneath

I remember those gas lamp hookups, we also had some mechanical bells on a wire that one would ring for the servants.

@Number - got a sealed up disused staircase that currently has a ladder and some tools propped on it, plus one of those dumbwaiter doors, also sealed up

Home is

Old houses have a lot of character, at least.

The non-functional stairway goes part-way to the 2nd fl and then just stops. It's got pipes and a floor blocking it now. It's covered in mystery dust and is sort of a "closet," in the sense that we throw things on it that awkwardly teeter on its slanted surfaces

Should we climb, or go the other way?

I've known several hoses with an extra staircase. Hopefully not haunted.

Thanks Roffle! I got to see the hardware in my hip, it cut a striking profile in x-ray. Bigger than they made it sound. I just started walking again and just have to rebuild the mushy muscles and re-establish a proper gait

I saw that at Sundance online last year, and a second time on the big screen at Ambler since I needed to show George & Hattie and see that amazing footage in a theater.

Aha... just read a list of Godin's fave contemporary works that are classical based and he mentions Lou Reed Street Hassle! No doubt he was quoting that and Bach as well... it keeps going down the line the the borrows... love it!
