GAL COSTA TRIBUTE

A Tribute to Brazilian Tropicália’s legendary singer, GAL COSTA, who passed away Wednesday at the age of 77.

We’ll hear songs from her early career, making politically-tinged music with the other major players in the Tropicalismo Movement, as well as her experimental acid jazz influenced work, her soundtracks and collaborations.

We’ll also be hearing some new music and a soon-to-be released reissue from the recently reformed Heavenly!

Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 5:04:56 PM
Thank you for this tribute, Lizbot!
Lizbot (host) 5:05:10 PM
Hello Rob! I'm happy to do it, but so sad she's gone
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 5:06:02 PM
We're sad too. Plus Mimi Parker of the band Low passed on Sunday or Monday
Lizbot (host) 5:06:03 PM
I wasn't feeling well and was thinking of getting a sub,...I have a very sore throat and am fatigued, but didn't test positive for COVId (had it recently, so I doubt it's that,) but when I heard she died I knew I had to go on air
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 5:06:13 PM
So it's a sad week
Lizbot (host) 5:07:16 PM
@Rob - I know. Sad week. I may play some Low later in the program. The first 2 hours are gonna be all Gal, maybe a little past 2 hours. I figure a lotta DJs already paid tribute to Mimi, but I will probably play some Low tracks after 7 PM
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 5:07:41 PM
Oh yikes, I'm sorry to hear that you are sore and fatigued. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery for you.
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 5:09:05 PM
Yep. I heard a bunch of Low songs on KEXP earlier this week, including my favorite. Mind you, I'm not a big fan of Low, but I did see them once in the 90s
Lizbot (host) 5:09:52 PM
@Rob - Yeah, I am so annoyed because I got COVID for the first time at the end of September, just before I was scheduled to get the bi-covalent booster, and so I had to delay the booster, and I was going to get it this weekend in time for it to take full effect by Thanksgiving, BUT now I'm sick again and not so sure I should get booster while sick, even if it's not covid... Ugh
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 5:10:16 PM
Last night Mike Lupica played Costa's "Negro Amor", which we really enjoyed. Might you be playing that song tonight?
Parrscream 5:10:41 PM
Hello all! Squeezing in a few minutes of listening before I head out to my son't hockey practice. Hope you feel better LIz! Have a great night all!
Lizbot (host) 5:11:17 PM
@Rob - I don't have that one cued up, but might dig it up!
Lizbot (host) 5:11:23 PM
Hi Parrscream!
Lizbot (host) 5:12:11 PM
@Parrscream - Thank you! I am provably not going to talk a lot on mic tonight to rest my voice
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 5:13:12 PM
That would be nice, Lizbot, but since you're not feeling your best, you need not dig it up
Parrscream 5:13:16 PM
Understandable! Rest those vocal chords so you are good for next week! Have a great week!

Hi Number 6! So glad to hear that!
Lizbot (host) 5:15:19 PM

Lizbot (host) 5:16:38 PM

Lizbot, yikes about the vaccine timing! My medical publishing wife looked up just now in her organization's Covid vax monograph and didn't see anything saying that you shouldn't not get the vax if you are feeling ok enough to go out. Maybe ask your doctor though?
Lizbot (host) 5:20:56 PM
...and to all the airplanes
Lizbot (host) 5:21:58 PM
@Rob - Yeah, I'm bummed. With all the other boosters, I got em as soon as I was eligible. This time I waited like 2 weeks and got friggin COVID, despite masking, so I think I got it in a crowd at an outdoor show.
Lizbot (host) 5:22:23 PM
@Rob - Good to know! Thank your wife from me for looking that up, please!

There's a Grasshopper Rd. in the burbs.

@Number 6, I'm the same age with the same mindset
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 5:24:34 PM
@Number 6, yikes!
Lizbot (host) 5:24:49 PM
@Rob - I guess my main hesitation is - even though this doesn't feel like when I had COVID in September (though I DID have a sore throat and fatigue as part of it, but other symptoms too,) - I know I could have symptoms for days and it be COVID before it shows as positive on a test, and I know we're told not to get the booster while having COVID, so I feel like maybe I should wait a few more days and test again before getting the booster, because I really want the booster to have max. efficacy
Brian 'D' For Donor 5:24:54 PM
This one yeah. RIP Gal. She was soooo smooth.
Lizbot (host) 5:25:07 PM
Hi Brian!
Lizbot (host) 5:25:51 PM
@Number 6 - Yeah, I feel like a LOT of creeping crud is in circulation right now. My kid didn't feel so great last week
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 5:26:24 PM
@Lizbot, I think that's the smart approach. Bummer about your T'giving though
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 5:26:37 PM
Hi Brian!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 5:27:49 PM
I asked this last night but I can't remember who was in the chat vis a vis now. Did anybody wake up early to watch the eclipse on Tuesday morning before sunrise?
Brian 'D' For Donor 5:28:37 PM
Yep. David Byrne totally turned me on to Tropicalismo via those Luaka Bop records in the late 80s early 90s
Brian 'D' For Donor 5:30:35 PM
"Brazil Classics 1: Beleza Tropical" was the main one I heard
Lizbot (host) 5:32:23 PM
@Number 6 - Even though I think Gal was singing about a Grasshopper airplane in Lost in the Paradise, I like to think she was singing to a little grasshopper in her hand because she sings so tenderly and affectionately in that song.
Number 6 5:32:31 PM
Faaar Out!
Lizbot (host) 5:32:42 PM
god I love this song's crazy intro and those when those horns come in
Lizbot (host) 5:33:49 PM
@Brian - Yeah, gotta hand it to David Byrne! I found that Os Mutantes first album on CD reissued by Luaka Bop in a certain defunct mainstream record store (Tower) and thus began my journey into Tropicalia
ǝɹnɔsqꓳ ǝɥꓕ ǝʌɐꓷ 5:33:53 PM

Lizbot (host) 5:35:11 PM
@Rob - Sadly I missed the eclipse, even though I had crappy sleep that night/early morning and had to be up by 6:30 am, so could've seen it. I saw quite a few photos of it on social media that morning, though!
Lizbot (host) 5:35:23 PM

Hello Guelo! Glad you're digging it!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 5:44:55 PM
@Lizbot, the totality ended at sunrise, which was roughly 6:40/6:45 am. So you had a fully eclipsed moon sinking in the west while the sun brightened the sky in the east. I did not get up to see it, because our view to the west blocked by buildings. And I didn't sleep all that well.
Lizbot (host) 5:47:35 PM
I love her "WA!" just before the chorus!
Lizbot (host) 5:48:32 PM

Lizbot (host) 5:55:43 PM
Hi Stephen! Glad to hear it!
Mikachu 5:56:38 PM
Do you know about the Tropicalia movement and the Manifesto Antropófago?
Lizbot (host) 5:58:42 PM
@Stephen - The first album I ever bought from an artist in the Brazilian Tropicalia music/political movement Gal was a founding member of was at your old employer, Tower, when I bought a reissue of the first Os Mutantes album there in the mid-90s. Then I got Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Caetano Veloso, Maria Bethania, Nara Leao, et.al. shortly thereafter in various stores, a bunch abroad
Lizbot (host) 5:59:43 PM
Hi Mikachu! yes! WPRB screened a doc about Tropicalia years ago at the Princeton Public Library, but I got into it in my 20s in the 90s and even tried to learned Portuguese..ha, it didn't take!
Mikachu 6:09:46 PM
Cool! There is this one quote from the Manifesto Antropófago (or the 'cultural cannibalism manifesto' in English) that sticks with me: "Tupi or not Tupi" which is ripping off Shakespeare of course- but also is a reference to aboriginal Tupi people, meaning something like "how do we embrace our aboriginal heritage as Brazilians" - all of which is likely problematic in how we discuss culture and race in the US at the moment - but mind this is from 1960's Brasil
Lizbot (host) 6:11:47 PM
@Mikachu - A catchy and memorable but also legit message! I love that they called it to the cultural cannibalism manifesto
richard pledged-up lyons 6:12:21 PM
Such a good show! Thank you for this :)
Lizbot (host) 6:15:30 PM
@Mikachu - That quote reminds me of the musical movement founded in Paraguay by Zeco Afonso, who wrote that Milho Verde song Gal sang that I played in the previous set. Zeco founded the Guarania style of Paraguayan music to incorporate and honor his native Paraguayan Guaraní roots. I learned about him from my best friend in college who grew up in Paraguay and gave me a great of poems by Guarani poet Jose Appleyard
Lizbot (host) 6:15:37 PM

So today I learned that the version of this song I hear frequently is a cover
Rofflestomp (Sonar Donor) 7:24:40 PM
Hi Lizbot, hi all. Geez, just looking at the playlist and my first take of it was that the playlist had a skip. Anyway happy trails Gal Costa.
Lizbot (host) 7:25:46 PM
MINNIE!!!! Damn, those soaring Minnie Riperton vocals get me every time!
Lizbot (host) 7:26:42 PM
@TAndy - Pete Brown wrote it but Cream made it famous

So that's where Missy Elliot got inspired from, Ann Peebles I Can't Stand the Rain!

Veloso tells an interesting story in one of the two Tropicalia era memoirs in which Gal and he and Gil were sitting at an outdoor cafe and some rep from the official media came over to the table and inquired what they were working on creatively. Gal said she was practicing a new song 'Baby' and, at the urging of said official, she sang a few lines a cappella. This so angered the official -- he found the song so offensive -- that he slapped her across the face! It really struck a nerve with him!

Veloso is a really eccentric but affecting writer! He really made you feel the emotions of that heady but turbulent period with a rare immediacy. It's my favorite musician's memoir.
Lizbot (host) 7:53:05 PM
@George - I'm happy you heard it!
Rofflestomp (Sonar Donor) 7:54:42 PM
Hows the hip George? I would be finding all the metal detectors in the city and have a field day...
