get ready for some SLICK production values! This is the SOPHISTI-POP show!
Parrscream 5:04:01 PM
Hi Liz! So happy to catch the beginning of your show.... Gotta leave to take my son to hoceky practice in a bit!
Lizbot (host) 5:04:22 PM
Hello Parrscream! Glad you made it!
Lizbot (host) 5:06:20 PM
@ParrScream - I hope this show gets yr son amped up for hockey practice during the drive!
Lizbot (host) 5:06:31 PM
The lyrics to this song make me smile
Ossy Hyouka 5:10:10 PM
Hi Liz!
Lizbot (host) 5:10:19 PM
Hi Ossy! How's it going?
Lizbot (host) 5:10:29 PM
@Ossy - I hope you had a good Halloween!
Donating Supporting Monthly 5:11:04 PM
ohhhh slick production show, love it!
Lizbot (host) 5:12:14 PM
Hi DSM! Soooooo slick!
Ossy Hyouka 5:12:56 PM
I'm great and so was my halloween! Killed it on school grounds as a progressive insurance witch and much later watched halloween classics! What of you?
Ossy Hyouka 5:13:39 PM
Like the capilized hotdog, don't put too much smelly mustard or so LOL
Lizbot (host) 5:13:48 PM
@DSM - People are gonna think they got teleported to an 80s/early 90s high-end studio session or a lush Annie Lennox video!
Shut Up Wesley 5:15:03 PM
ANNIE!!
Donating Supporting Monthly 5:15:39 PM
That sounds fantazzztic!
Lizbot (host) 5:16:21 PM
@Ossy - So glad to hear it! I took my teen to her friend's house for trick-or-treating, but of course she & her friend left the adults in the dust and took off alone, while we sat out on the porch with her friend's new kittens and let some of the smaller trick-or-treaters pet them! Highlight: At one point the kittens climbed into a hollow plastic skull decoration
Lizbot (host) 5:16:46 PM
Hello Wesley! High Priestess Annie!
Lizbot (host) 5:17:06 PM
@DSM - glad you like it so far!
Shut Up Wesley 5:17:54 PM
Also - the intro to tonight’s show must be one of the most obscure Roy Clark/Archie Campbell Hee Haw routines…
Lizbot (host) 5:18:30 PM
@Ossy - haha, the hot dogs in the video to that Prefab Sprout song bathe themselves in chlorinated pool waters, which I'm sure where their mustard wound up!
Shut Up Wesley 5:18:37 PM
Swing Out Sister! 💃
Lizbot (host) 5:18:51 PM
@Wes - This is another one with a really fun video!
Lizbot (host) 5:19:08 PM
@Wes - I find this song to be PURE OPTIMISM
Lizbot (host) 5:20:13 PM
@Wes - I love that Annie Lennox's dad...or granddad, I can't remember which..., was groundskeeper at a castle she later OWNED with her top 40 $$$
Donating Supporting Monthly 5:20:42 PM
Never noticed before but the bass on this reminds me of West End Girls in a way
Ossy Hyouka 5:20:59 PM
I almost confused Annie Lennox with Ari Lennox LOL
Lizbot (host) 5:21:16 PM
and now for a VERY silly cover!
Number 6 5:21:23 PM
Hi Lizbot and all of the 'Botaholics and Pledgeaholics!
Lizbot (host) 5:21:55 PM
the airplane to strangely satisfying cheeseland is taking off at the beginning of this track
Lizbot (host) 5:22:06 PM
Hello Number 6!
Number 6 5:22:51 PM
I usually don't like covers, but I like this one.
Lizbot (host) 5:22:56 PM
@Ossy - haha! Ari is decidedly younger! But now I'm imagining a collab between Ari & Annie!
Lizbot (host) 5:24:03 PM
@Number 6 - This one is a lot of fun! I admit to having ACTED OUT the lines of this song in a bar with my friend Mikers in the early 2000s. And we of course mimicked bird soaring with our hands and made absolute fools of ourselves for fun
Ossy Hyouka 5:24:04 PM
Sure real, a Lennox duo of 80s and 2020s!
Number 6 5:24:56 PM
Some groups can take a cover to a whole new level.
Dominique Montgomery 5:25:50 PM
Waiting for a Sparks track
Ossy Hyouka 5:25:51 PM
Liz- Hahaha, that's why hotdogs are smelly like some rival girl of Velma from Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated 2010s show and cute Halloween experiences you had!
Shut Up Wesley 5:25:51 PM
Greetings Number 6. I hope you’ll refrain from being… unmutual…?
Lizbot (host) 5:26:45 PM
@Number 6 - That whole Erasure album, aptly titled Other People's Songs, is made up of covers and my favs are Solsbury and Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime
Number 6 5:27:18 PM
Hi Wes, sure!
Lizbot (host) 5:28:09 PM
Hi Dominique! We shall see!
Dominique Montgomery 5:28:52 PM
:)
Lizbot (host) 5:31:40 PM
@Ossy - haha, I think we drank some Long Island ice teas, which might have had something to do with the evening's proceedings! And speaking of hot dogs, at LEAST we didn't drink Budweiser, which I maintain smells and tastes like hot dog water!
CARLOS RAMONE 5:33:56 PM
I heard “ destination unknown “ by missing persons in a grocery store today..would fit in nicely with the show
Shut Up Wesley 5:34:32 PM
@Number 6 - Music begins where words leave off
Number 6 5:34:37 PM
@Liz- Robert Wyatt did something similar with the album Nothing Can Stop Us.
Lizbot (host) 5:36:03 PM
Hello Carlos! hmmm, good point! I'll see what I can do!
Shut Up Wesley 5:37:44 PM
@LizBot - looking forward to some slickly-produced SPARKS!
Lizbot (host) 5:38:15 PM

Number 6 5:55:55 PM
Long time since I heard Joe Jackson!:)
Brian 'D' For Donor 5:56:02 PM
Graham Maby on the killer bass line!
Lizbot (host) 5:56:35 PM
Joe Jackson - Another poolside smooth jam from my community swimming pool in the 80s. MOST of the slick sophisti-pop I heard growing up was summer afternoons at the pool, or in my 3rd-6th grade best friend's mom's Pontiac Firebird, which later, unironically, caught fire while we were riding in it and we had to jump the hell out. Not a mellow experience
Lizbot (host) 5:56:55 PM
@Brian - Hail Maby! THis bassline is sick!
Number 6 5:57:34 PM
I also haunted the South Street Tower records and got all of his stuff on CD.

Shut Up Wesley 6:08:23 PM
Let’s also remember guitarist Vinnie Zummo. Played on Joe Jackson’s song Hometown from Big World.

Missing Persons trivia- after the band ended bassist Patrick O’Hearn released a number of ambient soundscape recordings. He is also something of a self-taught synthesizer expert.

@Carlos Ramone - Nice! I am PUMPED when I hear good music in the grocery store because I don't expect so it's a pleasant surprise. Some stores have much better music than others. TJs in Center City is often pretty good. Ramones would make me happy and hyped and probably make me shop faster!

Lizbot (host) 6:24:23 PM
Hi Bob! Whoa! I want that experience for myself. I'd be looking around at strangers, trying to find a kindred spirit
Lizbot (host) 6:25:06 PM
@Rob - Perfect! I am not as surprised it was Wholefoods because I knew ppl who worked there many years ago and at least back then they had SOME control over the music
Rob from Pledgeyland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 6:25:19 PM

Reading about that episode now ...Oct 1982. I liked that Murphy, Piscopo, Louis-Dreyfus, Kazurinsky era. The SNL of my pre teen hood. Re runs of the OG cast not far behind in rear view. Michael Keaton was the host that night in 1982 (Night Shift film was out around then). Michael Palin and Andy Kaufman made special guest appearances.

@Rofflestomp - weird! I just think of Bo Diddley when I think of I Want Candy, which is a song I just can't deal with!
Lizbot (host) 6:33:42 PM
Hi Daniel! Thanks!
Daniel Fare 6:33:47 PM
Do you know Housemartins? Seems like a similar vibe
Shut Up Wesley 6:34:12 PM
That was some space-age rockabilly there…

It will be happy hour if Lizbot plays Housemartins
Lizbot (host) 6:35:05 PM
@Daniel - Oh yeah! I'll see if I can dig some Housemartins up!
Brian 'D' For Donor 6:35:20 PM
Warren Cuccurullo . . . kinda young kinda wow
Rob from Pledgeyland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 6:36:43 PM
I remember reading a short review of a Housemartins record in the punk zine Flipside. I can't remember if the reviewer liked it, but said reviewer had the name wrong and iirc ended the review with 'what the hell is a housemartian anyway?'
Daniel Fare 6:37:01 PM
I started my first dj set with Get Up Off Our Knees by Housemartins
Brian 'D' For Donor 6:37:14 PM
Haircut 100... wow this is all the MTV playlist of my youth. Is Icicle Works "Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream)" in the mix? That is a great percussion part. Timbales? Roto-Toms?
Daniel Fare 6:37:28 PM
Lol housemartian is a good name for a band too
Lizbot (host) 6:37:43 PM
@Daniel Fare - First ever? Awesome!
Lizbot (host) 6:38:43 PM
@Rob from Pledgeyland - If I play HouseMartiAns, it'd have to play The Martian Hop by The Ran-Dells!

I have heard Adam Ant / Adam and the Ants several times in the past few weeks on prb and loved it! Was really into him/them for a while back early 80s
Shut Up Wesley 6:40:04 PM
Question- does the name China Crisis refer to political unrest in a far eastern country, or not having enough plates when unexpected guests come over for dinner?
Rob from Pledgeyland 🦀 🇺🇦 🌻 🇮🇷 6:40:36 PM
House Martin is a European species of swallow which is quite common in England
Brian 'D' For Donor 6:40:55 PM
Or when Grace Slick's kid tries to deal with her given name and changes it. China Crisis
Brian 'D' For Donor 6:41:47 PM
China Slick Kantner fits in as she was an MTV VJ so it all works fully circled
Shut Up Wesley 6:42:11 PM
Oh no! Boy meets girl! The scratchiest rhythm guitar this side of James Brown!
Brian 'D' For Donor 6:43:11 PM
Yep definitely JB scratchy rhythm gtr. And Aussie 80s legends INXS too. That guitar player and bass player must have studied the James Brown band play book daily
Shut Up Wesley 6:44:16 PM
HEAVEN 17!!!
Lizbot (host) 6:45:15 PM
@Brian D - I love Adam Ant.. Don't have any queued this show but we'll see. Saw him at the TLA several years ago and he was really committed to the pirate make-up, which was heavily sweated off by mid-way through his set
Lizbot (host) 6:45:31 PM
@Wes - Am I bringing back more Young Wesley memories?
Shut Up Wesley 6:46:32 PM
@LizBot yes. (blushes)☺️
Lizbot (host) 6:46:58 PM
@Daniel Fare- Nice! I love DJ origin stories! I had my first radio break in 1997 at WHRC, which is now gone, but my first live break at a NYE 1999 party where friends reserved a bar that was cheap because it had just gone outta business! the Ten Stone on Lombard
Shut Up Wesley 6:48:35 PM
The Luxury Gap is a brilliant album from beginning to end.

Lizbot (host) 6:50:19 PM
@Brian D / Brian D - haha, China Crisis - never thought of all the implications!

Speaking of - happy birthday to Grace Slick - 83 on Oct 30.
TAndy: Monthly Doner 🥙 6:54:44 PM
I've been silently enjoying. But I promise I've been enjoying this. I've always had a soft spot for cheesy 80s pop music, especially with the most ridiculous gated reverb and synth usage
Lizbot (host) 6:55:09 PM
@Wes - oh wow, HBD, Grace!
Shut Up Wesley 6:55:45 PM
@LizBot yes, gated reverb was a relatively new thing back then, so it showed up everywhere.
Lizbot (host) 6:55:47 PM
@TAndy - glad to hear it! And Glad to hear it too when I'm out and about and one of these songs come on!
Lizbot (host) 6:56:06 PM
@Wes - for real! Definitely defined many songs of my childhood
Lizbot (host) 6:56:16 PM

Shut Up Wesley 6:57:40 PM
We’ve got (Kate) Bush.
TAndy: Monthly Doner 🥙 6:58:52 PM
Okay yeah this song is egregious. I love this so much!

@Rob - The swallow may fly south with the sun or the house martin or the plover may seek warmer climes in winter, yet these are not strangers to our land?
Lizbot (host) 6:59:35 PM
@TAndy - Yes! Mission accomplished!
Daniel Fare 6:59:56 PM
Is Deacon Blue named after the Steely Dan song
Daniel Fare 7:00:00 PM
It has to be right

Ironically, during my bass playing youth I never took up that thumb slap technique. I just figured there were plenty of players who could do it better than I could.
Lizbot (host) 7:20:30 PM
@Wes - To think, you could've impressed yr friends and family with yr oh so cool slap technique once Seinfeld came along
Shut Up Wesley 7:25:46 PM
@LizBot - it just wasn’t “me”. I didn’t like playing that way and I felt people hearing me try to do it would know. So I made a decision to not do it and if I lost work from that, so be it.
Shut Up Wesley 7:27:02 PM
(Btw, we both know the Seinfeld theme was played on a keyboard, right?)
Lizbot (host) 7:28:12 PM

Lizbot (host) 7:29:07 PM
@Wes - how about THIS bass?
Lizbot (host) 7:30:44 PM
I feel like Green Gartside basically tried to become Wales' answer to Prince after he abandoned Scritti's original post-punk style
