@TAndy- Same. I thought I’d be down in Cape May today, but my kid was anxious to get home to get her school supplies ready, so I drove home late last night (also partially to avoid the return traffic from the shore on Labor Day!) and couldn’t fall asleep for a while after the drive. I’m on 3 hours of sleep, but having an orange seltzer and kicking back. Just a little delirious!

@Addie - Oof, so sorry Z’s experience was so rotten. Kids can be such jerks. Hattie is pretty nervous about starting 8th tomorrow. The academic advisor she was assigned is her gym teacher, whom she has never gotten along with!

@Addie - Pretty warm here in Philly, but was so gorgeous and breezy down the shore yesterday! I had to drive home late last night cuz the kid just wanted to get a head start on prepping for tomorrow. She’s sitting across from me, collaging the covers of a pile of binders at the moment!

@Addie - At the same time, having been raised by two school teachers, I know they spend a long time in the weeks leading up to school starting again making these advisories and schedules and letting people switch can be too chaotic. But really, of ALL the people, this one REALLY doesn’t understand my kid. Most of the teachers love her

I hated middle school myself, the hard transition from ak easygoing elementary school to a corporate and uncaring feeling middle school staff was jarring lol

I’m super happy that middle school here is still in the building with elementary AND they have no homework.

@TAndy - same. I really hated Middle. It’s a tough age in the first place, then when you have less than ideal teachers, it’s all the worse. To top that off, her school lost so many good teachers during the pandemic and has been short-staffed for the past two years, which makes everyone suffer and that much more stressed

@Addie - Oooh, NO HOMEWORK sounds GREAT! I WISH Hattie’s school did that! I dread the homework stress, the last-minute rush before bedtime. It’s so uneven. Some nights there’s nothing and the next it’s like 5 hours of work after a full day of school. These kids need SOME sleep!

Homework is the devil >:) I frequently did mine the morning of class or just didn't do it at all, my grades were not impressive lol

Addie - Hmmm, maybe yellow cheese adding some garlic to be classic smelly, hihihi! Blue cheese is a top option though, lol

@Addie @TAndy - I loved my elementary school and I loved my high school. Middle felt like it was where my town sent all the worst teachers in the district. My mom was a teacher (not my teacher) and then the reading specialist at the elementary school I attended, and I confirm that at least one teacher from that school was reassigned to middle school as a disciplinary action!

I actually didn’t hate middle school at Collingswood. We had a bunch of really cool teachers and perhaps a statistically unlikely lack of bullying.

Tandy - Homework is hell and still is. One Labor Day in the intermediate schools, I was watching cartoon network movie marathon and the 1st movie of Pokemon with Mewtwo came on. Just when I was about to see the clone battle and ending, I was called to go over homework and I whined, especially annoying a maintenance worker LOOOL

Know how every tween movie in the mid 00s made fun of how miserable middle school was? True. Oldest teachers in my district at the time and contradictory rules. No gum allowed but high school which was across the street didn't care about gum.

I used to sub in the middle school at GFS and it was kind of a nightmare, to give another perspective. The kids were something else.

Lots of good ones but a few really obnoxious kids who made it hard for everyone else to learn.

@Addie - Wow, lucky! I liked almost all my elementary teachers. I was just a couple towns over from you!

Aah yes the kids. Middle school kids were a damn trip but my nephew made it through fine. He starts high school this year!

We had one princetonian sub who had a very thick regal accent, almost British. Another sub who would tell us about his drug experiences as a younger man. And another sub who had a certain mustache, which caused everyone to call him Mr. [Redacted] when he wasn't around

Subbing is a weird world. I also subbed a lot in the woodshop and once the middle schoolers turned some, uh, inappropriate objects.

@Addie - Oh wow! I wanna hear those stories! Before my dad ended up at Clayton High in South Jersey, which had its share of problems, he subbed in Philly, but mostly in North Philly publics, so very different vibe from GFS!

@Ossy @TAndy - Yeah, a LOT of this homework is busy work! Some is legit, but one of her teachers gives mountains of time-consuming busy work and she has her again this year 😖

I had a truly bonkers Spanish teacher in middle school who CUT a classmate’s hair in class without her consent…just walked up behind her and cut a chunk of her long hair off! She used to just talk about fights with her husband all class long. She did eventually get fired!

@TAndy - City Museum is a bonkers place I cannot begin to recommend enough and it’s full of stuff like that, no corporate sponsors, no rules, no maps, just 600,000 square feet and 10 stories of fun ridiculous stuff laid out like a maze
