Lakshminarayana Shankar (born 26 April 1950), better known as L. Shankar, was born in Chennai and raised in Sri Lanka. Shankar founded a violin trio with his brothers, L. Vaidyanathan and L. Subramaniam, that performed throughout India. While attending college at Wesleyan University in 1969, he met jazz musician John McLaughlin, with whom he founded "Shakti" in 1975, one of the early groups fusing Eastern and Western musical traditions. Shankar invented this double neck 10-string electric violin.

This Pallavi features a 6 3/4 beat rhythm cycle. I found it easier to follow if I considered it as a 27 beat cycle (4+4+4+4+4+4+3).

U. Srinivas - Ganamurthy
U. Srinivas Ganamurthy Thyagaraja
Rama Sreerama Real World Records 1995

Uppalapu Srinivas (28 February 1969 – 19 September 2014) was a mandolin player in Carnatic classical music and composer. Because he was a child prodigy, he was sometimes called the Mozart of classical Indian music. Rudraraju Subbaraju (disciple of Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar) taught U. Srinivas by singing, and U. Srinivas developed his phenomenal style of playing entirely his own, since mandolin had never been played in the rigorous and difficult Carnatic style before.

Srinivas started out on the acoustic mandolin, but neither the size nor plucking required of the acoustic mandolin was suited for long, sustained notes. He then switched to the electric mandolin, which was better suited for sustained notes and musical ornamentations. 5 strings: CGCGC.

Raga Hamsakankini has some resemblance to Patadeep and Bhimpalas. Just a note or two extra.
jimbeaux 9:36:01 AM
YeeoooO DTO! Thst last track was perfect for my AM exercises.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:38:43 AM
Good morning, Jimbeaux! I had never considered Indian Classical Music as 'workout' music. But okay, why not?
jimbeaux 9:39:38 AM
Deeeeeeep, slow stretching!
Sangeet Team (host) 9:41:13 AM
🧘 like yin yoga?
Ram Ramaprasd 9:41:27 AM
Sangeet will homage to the memory of the great musician, TVS, next Saturday. He had given many concerts in the Princeton area over the past years.
PADMA GANESH 9:42:34 AM
Good morning everyone!
Sangeet Team (host) 9:43:13 AM
Good morning, Padma!
PADMA GANESH 9:43:25 AM
It is very sad to hear that TVS has passed away.
PADMA GANESH 9:44:37 AM
I cannot forget TVS’s rendering of “Kaapali” in Mohanam in the style of his uncle.
PADMA GANESH 9:45:01 AM
He was a master of swaraprastharas and brighas
Ram Ramaprasd 9:45:27 AM
And also Eppovaru Varo in Jonpuri
PADMA GANESH 9:45:57 AM
@Ram of course
PADMA GANESH 9:47:04 AM
@Ram my cousin hosted him when he was in US for a concert and described him as a picture of humility.
Ram Ramaprasd 9:47:13 AM
He brought to the rasika's attention compositions of people like Indira Natesan
Ram Ramaprasd 9:48:28 AM
Many years back, under the CMANA banner, he gave a concert here completely devoted to the music of Papanasam Sivan
Sangeet Team (host) 9:49:06 AM
I recall Abhaya Varade in Hindolam by Indira Natesan.
Ram Ramaprasd 9:52:42 AM
He popularized that song, I think
Ram Ramaprasd 9:58:21 AM
@Padma His first concert in this area was at an auditorium in Princeton University - 1974 Dec or 1975 Jan. The host was to become a friend of mine later. Wonder whether he was your cousin
PADMA GANESH 10:00:00 AM
@Ram I love “Amba Paradevate”
Ram Ramaprasd 10:02:30 AM
@padma Sure and many more. He also sang Muthaiah Bhagavathar kritis (his guru's guru) - Bhuaneshwariya in Mohana Kalyani
PADMA GANESH 10:08:20 AM
@Ram I think not. My cousin is much younger and lives in the Midwest.
Ram Ramaprasd 10:09:51 AM
@Padma Ok thanks.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:49:18 AM
The jaltarang is fun to watch in concert.
Sangeet Team (host) 10:49:49 AM
The front 4 rows are provided plastic ponchos since they are in the "splash zone".
Sangeet Team (host) 10:54:00 AM
Also face shields are provided to protect the audience from the flying ceramic shards.🍵
Sangeet Team (host) 10:55:31 AM
Many venues will not allow jalatarang to perform due to the reputation for water damage to the stage. 💦
DSM 11:02:29 AM
Good morning, I am listening and appreciate the music!
Sangeet Team (host) 11:02:52 AM
Good morning, DSM. Thanks for dropping by.
DSM 11:05:04 AM
Jalatarang in concert sounds very exciting based on your descriptions below. Very rock n roll
Sangeet Team (host) 11:06:26 AM
That certainly doesn't come across in the recording, right?
DSM 11:08:05 AM
It does not, I was actually thinking what a calming piece that was, little did I know exploding tea cups were involved!
PADMA GANESH 11:08:42 AM
The jalatarangam was delightful!
Sangeet Team (host) 11:11:31 AM
Yes, the instrument is so rare.
Ram Ramaprasd 11:20:56 AM
The concerts with jalatrang accompaniment did not show any "water works". But in those days, i could not afford the front rows anyway. Not having plenty of money has its blessings
Sangeet Team (host) 11:24:43 AM
Greater distance from the stage also minimizes the hearing loss.
Ossy Hyouka 11:35:28 AM
Morning, great music from the Indian land to kick of the weekend and holiday!
Sangeet Team (host) 11:37:31 AM
Good morning, Ossy! Looks like it will be a pleasant long weekend in the area.
PADMA GANESH 11:54:32 AM
@Dave Thanks for playing the genius U Srinivas’s music
PADMA GANESH 11:56:21 AM
Wonder why he was not awarded the hig honor of Sangita Kalanidi
Sangeet Team (host) 11:57:54 AM
Always glad to play U. Srinivas. I saw his concert when he was quite young, in the early 80s., brought to the Philadelphia area by T.N. Bala.
jimbeaux 11:58:46 AM
Thank you Team Sangeet!🌺🌻🌼🌺🌻🌼
PADMA GANESH 11:59:10 AM
@Dave absolutely correct he is indeed Mozart of Carnatic music in many ways
Sangeet Team (host) 11:59:28 AM
It is our pleasure and privilege to bring you all Indian Classical Music every week.
Sangeet Team (host) 12:00:02 PM
So sad that U. Srinivas died so young.
