Shankar founded a violin trio with his brothers, L. Vaidyanathan and L. Subramaniam, that performed throughout India. While attending college at Wesleyan University in 1969, he met jazz musician John McLaughlin, with whom he founded "Shakti" in 1975, one of the early groups fusing Eastern and Western musical traditions. Shankar invented this double neck 10-string electric violin. This Pallavi features a 6 3/4 beat rhythm cycle. I found it easier to follow if I considered it as a 27 beat cycle (4+4+4+4+4+4+3). |

| U. Srinivas Ganamurthy Thyagaraja Rama Sreerama Real World Records 1995 Uppalapu Srinivas (28 February 1969 – 19 September 2014) was a mandolin player in Carnatic classical music and composer. Because he was a child prodigy, he was sometimes called the Mozart of classical Indian music. Rudraraju Subbaraju (disciple of Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar) taught U. Srinivas by singing, and U. Srinivas developed his phenomenal style of playing entirely his own, since mandolin had never been played in the rigorous and difficult Carnatic style before. Srinivas started out on the acoustic mandolin, but neither the size nor plucking required of the acoustic mandolin was suited for long, sustained notes. He then switched to the electric mandolin, which was better suited for sustained notes and musical ornamentations. 5 strings: CGCGC.
