My live skies are gray and moon-hazed only... provided my eyes have adjusted.

I didn't know there was a meteor shower tonight too! The moon is still bright here though, and I'm at work so it'd take forever for my eyes to adjust.

Light pollution is much more significant than I expected it would ever be. In CA I went to the joshua tree park over to an outlook, even the very distant lights from palm springs made seeing the complete night sky difficult. But I was too apprehensive to drive out to an extremely remote area after sunset

One time on These Vibes we asked people for unique ways of navigating. An excellent answer was "light pollution"

Haha true! The night sky in The US is pretty easy to navigate toward civilization now. Even easier if one happens to have a drone

i think the closest dark sky sanctuary is 6 hours away

We long for recognition on the face of this dark planet... here's my house!

My telescopaholic friend drives to presumably that place every few weeks to spend the night. Evidently the drive is worth it

I just looked on Find a Dark Sky Place. Cherry Springs in PA and Sky Meadows in Virginia are the closest

Unless you happen to own a seaworthy vessel, in which case you can just venture out from the shore for a bit

Jeez. It still hits me hard how much we have to learn about all of the physical properties of our universe despite being literal miracle children on a perfect conditions rock floating in a random system.

It's talk like this which probably led to the study of science, the creation of religion, and the overall topic of philosophy. We have the power to speak in ways that many animals can't, and yet all most do is talk drivel or share negativity.

Of course humans could have been more pragmatic throughout history, but dealing strictly in utilitarian thought would make a void of sympathy and empathy. Our existences would be means toward an end of greater existence, but maybe at the cost of our conscious and free thought?

I think pragmatism is all in the eye of the beholder

I may have been a bit vague in my context of that word. By pragmatism, I mean moreso if the ruling class, or people in general, didn't see the human condition as an existence to have fun with and have complete freedom. Instead seeing our existence as proof of some grand plan which we would have to work hard, expending our humanity to become "higher beings" by whatever definition these alt. humans would have for that.

Think like if instead of being the human we know now, we evolved to become like The Combine from the Half Life 2 games. Higher beings that achieved some immense level of success in the universe, far and wide. But at the cost of what we know as human emotions in exchange for being powerful.

Yeah I'm all about digging around in the emotional dirt

For me the relating to what other people think it means to be human is where all the fun is
