Released in 1972. "I Hear You Knocking" (or "I Hear You Knockin'") is a rhythm and blues song written by Dave Bartholomew. New Orleans rhythm and blues singer Smiley Lewis first recorded the song in 1955. The lyrics tell of the return of a former lover who is rebuffed. "I Hear You Knocking" reached number two on the Billboard R&B singles chart in 1955, making it Lewis's most popular and best-known song. Subsequently, numerous artists have recorded it, including Welsh singer and guitarist Dave Edmunds, whose version reached number one in the UK Singles Chart for six weeks in 1970 and was in the top 10 in several other countries.

Terry Jacks decided to name the lead character in this song "Billy" after hearing a song "Billy, Billy Went A Walkin'" by one of his favorite acts, a Montreal group called The Beau Marks. Jacks thought the name was a good fit. He told us: "I used the name Billy, because you've got to use a name that isn't going to stick out like a sore thumb. You can't do, 'Which way you goin', Lawrence.' Lots of people are called Billy, and it's a name that doesn't rub you wrong or anything."

Hi Eso & Sonic Bloominaries 👋
Brian D 12:21:03 PM
Ween 12 Golden Country Greats. A masterpiece. Ween did it with Ben in the mold of a classic Nashville country lp. Aaron and Mickey only sang on the lp, they did not play instruments. Hired professionals handled the instruments (some of that town's greatest) and background vocals by The Jordanaires (of Elvis records fame)
Esoterica (host) 12:21:54 PM
yes indeed, bri. :). ben will talk about it

That Harlequins track reminds me of the Arthur Alexander song that goes "You need a shot of rhythm and blues, with just a little rock an roll on the side just for good measure".
