MusicChallenged 9:16:53 AM
Wow what a meaning in that rendition by Kumar Gandharava - Kabir's compositions are always very deep in meaning
Guelo 9:21:37 AM
indeed. Good Morning Rungun and chat!
Sangeet Team (host) 9:24:18 AM
Hi @Guelo - Welcome to the show
PADMA GANESH 9:24:55 AM
Good morning all!
Sangeet Team (host) 9:25:44 AM
Good morning Padma
PADMA GANESH 9:26:04 AM
@Rungun, Kumar Gandharva - true to his last name!
PADMA GANESH 9:27:16 AM
@Rungun, so happy you brought up the ‘zha’ sound unique to Tamil.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:28:04 AM
@Padma - I love that song of Kumar Gandharva.
PADMA GANESH 9:28:29 AM
Many many millions in India and worldwide do not have a clue as to how ancient the literary tradition of Tamil is!
Sangeet Team (host) 9:28:37 AM
The "zha" sound is hard for many people
PADMA GANESH 9:30:32 AM
I love Hindustani music but Carnatic music has not been given its due in India or around the world as much as Hindustani music.
Sangeet Team (host) 9:34:35 AM
@Padma - Ravishankar, Hariprasad Chaurasia (and they got picked up Beatles) gave hindustani music exposure in the western world...Carnatic did not have similar ambassadors...
Christine 🦉 9:54:05 AM
That recent Musiri Subramanya Iyer piece was transporting. 🌅
Christine 🦉 9:54:39 AM
Good morning Rungun, Sangeet Team & everyone
Sangeet Team (host) 9:55:46 AM
@Christine - Good morning. Musiri does have that in his voice. There are a few more that do that to me and to name a few - MD Ramanathan, Madurai Somu,
MusicChallenged 9:57:27 AM
@Christine - you must be an ardent fan of WPRB. I have e-seen you in so many chat rooms.
MusicChallenged 9:58:51 AM
Technology in the 50's and 60's were not that good and many great music is lost because it could not be captured well
Sangeet Team (host) 10:00:12 AM
@MusicChallenged - if only the technology was there - it would be so great. Having worked with some of those old music, it is a challenge to edit them
Christine 🦉 10:08:00 AM
Thank you very much for the recommendations, @Rungun. So much music to hear and learn! Music is life.
Christine 🦉 10:11:34 AM
Nice to e-see you again, @MusicChallenged. I am a WPRB chat denizen.
MusicChallenged 10:29:57 AM
@Christine - hearing that word "Chat Denizen" for the first time.
Ram Ramaprasd 10:34:31 AM
Good Morning, Everyone in the chat room. The "zha" sound is also in the Persian language. My Iranian friends had no problem with it
Sangeet Team (host) 10:36:38 AM
@Ram - very interesting. I should try it on my Iranian friends not that you mention :-)
Ram Ramaprasd 10:41:03 AM
@Padma, Musicians like Ravi Shankar took Hindustani music outside the country way back, and his association with The Beatles was also helpful. We did not have such an event with Carnatic music until much later - K V Narayanaswamy and Lalgudi at Edinburgh and M S Subbulakshmi at U.N. I stand corrected on these events
Sangeet Team (host) 10:43:44 AM
@Ram - but KVN, Lalgudi and MSS did not make the connections like Ravishankar did with other western music groups.
Mark Reichard 10:55:06 AM
Such gorgeous, hypnotic sounds. This is so beautiful. I'm so grateful to the hosts of this show for sharing your knowledge with us. I get turned on to new things every day on this station.
PADMA GANESH 11:05:38 AM
@Rungun, what a wonderful M S piece you played just now!
PADMA GANESH 11:08:57 AM
@Ram Carnatic musicians have always willing to learn and sing Hindustani pieces, have been connections with their Hindustani counterparts, Carnatic musician families have learnt Hindustani music (T N Krishnan’s sister Rajam), sing Hindustani pieces (N Ramani would always pick up low sruti flute and play a few Hindustani pieces)
PADMA GANESH 11:10:28 AM
Sorry for all typos below :-(
PADMA GANESH 11:12:03 AM
@Ram Dr. S. Ramanathan and T Sankaran to the list
Sangeet Team (host) 11:12:22 AM
@Mark - Thanks for your feedback, the four of us do our best and I am glad you like the hypnotic sounds.
Ossy Hyouka 11:13:30 AM
Morning, beautiful enchanting music on the last track, played in fusion of this weather weekend!
Sangeet Team (host) 11:14:17 AM
@Padma - Most of the show so far was shorter pieces. So I wanted a longer one and thought MSS would be my longer piece for the show. The meaning also appealed to me. Murga was my Dad Ramanathan and Brother Venkataraman's fav god :-)
Ram Ramaprasd 11:14:27 AM
@Padma, you are correct. They came later and since then Carnatic music is now well known and appreciated
Sangeet Team (host) 11:14:49 AM
@Ossy - welcome and glad you like the music
Sangeet Team (host) 11:16:40 AM
@Padma - Carnatic musicians have incorporated hindustani pieces in their concerts. Hindustani do it less frequently in comparison, but they certainly do ..
PADMA GANESH 11:18:41 AM
@Ram, I have heard Veenai Balachander speak ecstatically of visiting Nashville and New Orleans - with their great association with country music and jazz
Christine 🦉 11:41:02 AM
Such an energizing live recording! 👏👏👏
Mark Reichard 11:41:09 AM
If you love music as we do (I'm including everyone in this room), Nashville and New Orleans are must-see (hear) destinations, although I must confess I've never been to either of them! I'm not sure where you are in the world, but living in or near NYC certainly gives us access to most likely the widest variety of styles of music as any city in the world. And I always say, aren't we lucky to live in the age of recorded music, when we can listen to any music from anywhere in the world, any time.
Mark Reichard 11:42:19 AM
100 years ago, geniuses like Ravi Shankar or John Coltrane or Jimi Hendrix or Hank Williams would have been just rumors, and now we can listen to them any time we like.
Ossy Hyouka 11:45:23 AM
Yeah, Christine!
Sangeet Team (host) 11:53:16 AM
Thanks Christine and Ossy for the feedback about the music.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:54:56 AM
@Mark - I think living in a large metropolitan region suddenly opens you to a wide culture - if you are willing to take it in. I hear your comment about recorded music, but I love live concerts anyday. (I am not a fan of the loud rock music, but love it when it is played softer)
Christine 🦉 11:55:11 AM
Thank you Rungun and the entire Sangeet team! 💯 Take care, everybody.
Ossy Hyouka 11:56:19 AM
You welcome and anytime, Sangeet! Great musical festivities and Happy Easter.
Sangeet Team (host) 11:56:27 AM
I really wish I could have played this piece which goes on for about 15 minutes in full. Mahesh and Kaushiki jam very well towards the end... I wish I could slow down the clock and fit it all :-)
Sangeet Team (host) 11:57:29 AM
@Ossy - Happy easter to you and all those who celebrate
Sangeet Team (host) 11:58:35 AM
@Christine - thank you for dropping by and joining the chat. Means a lot to us when listeners drop by and chat and enjoy the music we share with you...
Mark Reichard 11:59:07 AM
Of course nothing beats live music--I'm just glad there are recordings of all the people I was too young to see! Thank you for this marvelous show, I've noted some of these recordings to add to my collection.
Sangeet Team (host) 12:00:17 PM
@Mark - I share your thoughts about recorded music as the next alternate to hear all the music in the world
Mark Reichard 12:00:41 PM
Thanks especially for the private recordings which I would have never heard but for your excellent curating.
MusicChallenged 12:00:57 PM
love the conversation. The "chat traffic" has been big today.
Sangeet Team (host) 12:01:10 PM
Bye all o fyou. Please join us next week with host Ram
