Is there a genre you typically stick to?

If anything, FCC laws are tighter on community stations than commerical

Nah! I really try to play a mix and don't really do theme shows/special interest shows all that often

this has probably been one of the craziest years for weather we've experienced

It's a deeply disturbing thing to have to remind myself on the daily that it's just going to get worse

We have a december tornado outbreak, Ida and its remnants, multiple tornado outbreaks in THIS tristate area, which even having one around here is an extraordinary event

anyone who says climate change is a myth just has brain worms, simply put.

The flooding all along the raritan this year was alarming to say the least

oh man, didn't realize the raritan had been flooding (I'm also not in that area right now but)

The Raritan floods after Ida were the highest in recorded history, weren't they?

The river had to be about 15 or 20 feet above it's normal max height

For the first time in my lifetime (I think) that whole stretch of Rt. 1 before Princeton, along the D&R Canal, straight up flooded to legendary levels too.

It has flooded before but the old photos I've seen weren't as high as this year

Yep, though the flooding at the expressway was due to pump failure. Otherwise the flooding would have been much less severe down there

Dark ambient is the perfect background track to this convo

I spent the better part of the whole week after those storms researching articles and weather forum posts regarding the events. tl;dr it was a worst case scenario for the tristate area with worst case conditions. Hopefully it's a wakeup call for state and fed legislature to take infrastructure improvement and overhauls more seriously now.

If it's any consolation, the work is getting done

Just on an extremely slow rate unfortunately

Mainly due to the cost and massive daily-life-disruption of large scale overhauls

You're right, Michael, this is the perfect soundtrack for this discussion

very true. that little project at the 295 & north/south freeway interchange near camden has been going for nearly a decade now, and wont be finished till probably 2030 lol

One of the retaining walls partially collapsed earlier this year because they decided to use sand-like dirt

One other consolation is that there is incredible research being done to face these problems

On an academic level, grid and infrastructure is being looked at specifically in context of severe weather

We have a lot of catching up to do, but the irony of disasters is like you said the research and potential solution proposed afterwards are nothing short of human miracles

The biggest hurdle to pass regarding the research is getting it translated from paper to real life
