Hi gang, how we doin?
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 5:12:21 PM
I made my own version of a song I like real well this week because there were things about multiple unique versions of said track I wanted to be on the same recording.
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 5:12:32 PM
Correct, Marcus!

Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 5:15:01 PM
Yeah, this whole record is super good. I emailed the band to learn...they had played Philadelphia a few weeks ago. Alas!
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 5:15:23 PM
Love to learn from other WPRB DJs.
donutage 5:17:06 PM
I saw friend-of-the-show Marissa Paternoster with her band Universal Girlfriend this past weekend. They were great, to no one's surprise.
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 5:17:21 PM
Awesome. Might have some new Noun coming up in a few...
donutage 5:18:59 PM
It was odd being in the Khyber Pass again for the first time in 30-some years. The old concert space is now a dining room, but it turns out there's an upstairs they use for performance space. Pretty small, but it did the job.
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 5:19:56 PM
They used to have "DJ nights" up there sometimes.
David Shortell 5:20:36 PM
This is the first I've heard of U.G. I see it features the singer from Cayetana, who I saw a decade ago at the Brighton Bar.
donutage 5:25:54 PM
Yeah, it's Augusta Koch from Cayetana/gladie, Marissa, and 2 other women whose names I should know but don't. They started playing together a little over a year ago. I saw what I think was their first official performance in Aug. 2025.
donutage 5:27:13 PM
I think it's still sort of a side-gig for all of them. They don't have any records or merch yet.

Hi everybody. Do you like Ratt?
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 5:47:34 PM
Marcus, I never liked the distracting bleep in the album version, or the "Elvis was a hero to most" 3x loop and the soundtrack version has neither but...the extended version with the horns rules so...I cut the uncensored "Elvis was a hero to most..." verse from the former and cut it into the latter!
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 5:48:05 PM
Carlos, I missed most of the game.

23 years after “Do the Right Thing”, Spike Lee reprised his Mookie character in “Red Hook Summer”. Sal had rebuilt his pizzeria and Mookie continued to deliver for him. He even wore the exact same shirt from the former film!
oldmotorbikeguy 5:57:01 PM
i was just thinking that she is amazing and I would love to see her play
David Shortell 5:58:04 PM
Noun's first drummer was Miranda from Hunchback (who reunited and are playing shows again).
donutage 6:01:48 PM
I can second Jon's recommendation of Marissa's Patreon, the Paternoster Listener Alliance. Along with the monthly tracks, she's been posting pages from a (harrowing) comic about the personal crisis she went through while Screaming Females was breaking up. It's a tough but moving read.
David Shortell 6:02:32 PM
But are Lambrini Girls ever coming to New Jersey?
oldmotorbikeguy 6:02:36 PM
i love her
donutage 6:04:21 PM
Minutemen! Great pick!
Dan Wade {2} 6:04:35 PM
I think Madeline Peyroux's version of "You're going to make me lonely when you go" is absolutely charming
David Shortell 6:04:52 PM
The first time Eric Burdon saw Alan Price after Alan left the Animals was in that 1967-released Dylan doc.
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 6:05:01 PM
David, I've never seen Red Hook Summer. Some year I'll watch every Spike Lee movie in order of release!
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 6:05:30 PM
Also David I think Lambrini Girls played Jersey City on a prior tour?
donutage 6:06:37 PM
Oh wow, this Specials song is WILD
David Shortell 6:06:58 PM
On Suzi Hotrod's WFMU program, you mean?
Rob from Maryland 🦀 6:07:00 PM
@Jon, did we hear the name "Radiohead" during your set announcement a few minutes ago?
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 6:07:27 PM
Trying to think of how I might have said such a thing, contextually.
Rob from Maryland 🦀 6:08:21 PM
Maybe it was two words that at low volume in this household while one of us was talking that we twisted in to "radiohead?"
Bob Borowsky 6:09:01 PM
Jon, Loved that Specials version, and now I can understand Dylan's lyrics! LOL
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 6:09:32 PM
Ha, Bob. Glad you dug it. Just getting started!
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 6:10:24 PM
David, I thought they played the theater in JC?

oldmotorbikeguy 6:15:43 PM

Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 6:16:11 PM
Robert Hazard two weeks in a row after maybe not playing him ever prior??
oldmotorbikeguy 6:16:16 PM
if only "young" was a dylan cover
David Shortell 6:17:19 PM
Not "You're a Big Girl Now" (1971) by the Stylistics?
donutage 6:17:24 PM
I was gonna comment on you entering your Hazard era, Jon!
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 6:18:01 PM
Hazard pay.
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 6:18:40 PM
If all goes according to plan those in the theater will also see a slide telling them they're listening to WPRB as part of the pre-show.
donutage 6:18:50 PM
I should hope so!

Greetings to Jon and his listeners. Unable to attend the screening. Jon could you ask Mr. Dylan .. How many protest singers are currently performing ?

The Donovan hate in the movie is vintage 1989 Pistons vs Jordan hating
Randy Marthins 6:22:46 PM
Don't panic
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 6:23:06 PM
Perfectly put. I saw Don't Look Back at the Three Penny in Chicago in the 1990s and it was a perfect evening. Didn't expect to like the film as much as I did because I think I thought it was "not for me."
David Shortell 6:23:52 PM
I have John Lennon's radio-unfriendly version of this on a cassette I bought from David Peel.
Patrick White 6:24:40 PM
I remember Devo at the Tower coming out as the Opening act Dove. RIP Tower Theater.
David Shortell 6:25:54 PM
I thought Dylan and Donovan got along amicably in the film.
Randy Marthins 6:27:06 PM
@jon - Billy Corgan had Stewart Copeland on his podcast and "URGH! A Music War" was mentioned; fondly remembered by the drummer of The Police
oldmotorbikeguy 6:28:07 PM
wow, best mic break i've heard on wprb in a long time.
Randy Marthins 6:28:18 PM
Had to post that while still fresh in my mind ---- carry on
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 6:28:21 PM
Randy, do you know what Stewart Copeland's toms said on them during Urgh!?
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 6:28:35 PM
OMBG, trying to keep it snappy for our captive audience!
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 6:28:49 PM
Also, I have SO MANY COVERS TO GET THROUGH (ideally 30).
oldmotorbikeguy 6:29:01 PM
i love it. more rock, less talk
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 6:29:24 PM
I am a fan of an hour of rock, talk as long as you feel fit, an hour of rock.
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 6:29:37 PM
But I can let other weeks be about ME. I understand the assignment.
oldmotorbikeguy 6:29:55 PM
nope, 3-4 song sets, talk for less than a minute and right back to it.
oldmotorbikeguy 6:30:15 PM
at least that is my ideal and my practice
RofflelecticDyslexia 6:30:23 PM
Playing by one's own rules is the way to go. :)
oldmotorbikeguy 6:30:29 PM
when and if i get the chance
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 6:31:16 PM
Respect. The framework is always ripe for rearrangement from week to week. I used to talk a lot more frequently in youth.
Randy Marthins 6:31:55 PM
@jon "Randy, do you know what Stewart Copeland's toms said on them during Urgh!?" I do!!! Quite impolite towards 'Ol' Sting-O!" --- the middle two words were "off" and "you"
RofflelecticDyslexia 6:32:05 PM
Kids right?
Dale Hazelton 6:32:08 PM

DJ Tenderloin 6:32:10 PM
Good evening Jon Solomon - good evening chatters - lovely evening
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 6:32:30 PM
Dale, thank goodness I had already flagged this one as a Bob Dylan cover.
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 6:32:37 PM
Hello DJ Tenderloin!
RofflelecticDyslexia 6:32:52 PM
There is an amazing Japanese koto version of All Along the Watchtower, but it based on the Hendrix version, which is a rather second hand interpretation, so not directly a cover, but way cool, and it really rocks.
Dale Hazelton 6:33:26 PM
did you run actross any covers of the man in the long black coat jon? i had his oh mercy album on repeat when it came out.
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 6:36:32 PM
I don't believe so, Dale?
donutage 6:37:47 PM
what the hell, another Feelies album I never knew came out? This is outrageous!
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 6:38:03 PM
This is on their covers LP (and also a RSD EP).
donutage 6:39:48 PM
My bandcamp shopping list is getting long again.
David Shortell 6:40:08 PM
Absolutely fabulous.
Amy Lee 6:40:10 PM
Wonder if anyone will notice the nanosecond clips inserted into the film for WPRB mind control.
donutage 6:41:01 PM
lol, Amy
DJ Tenderloin 6:42:38 PM
My sched. has been crazy or I woulda suggested Rainy Day - I'll Keep It With Mine - early 80s SoCal Paisley Undergound era. Always love the Feelies btw
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 6:42:45 PM
Rainy Day on deck!
DJ Tenderloin 6:42:58 PM
Get out! Great minds...
DJ Tenderloin 6:43:50 PM
They do a great, very sweet version. Excited to hear! And all your other goodies....
Amy Lee 6:47:51 PM
I've missed every mic break so perhaps it was covered. What's the film for school this week?
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 6:48:19 PM
Amy, GREAT question. Last week was Bonnie and Clyde. This week is Vertigo!
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 6:48:29 PM
I need to pick it up on the way home...
Classy Pat 6:48:53 PM
Is the Kurtis Blow track the only one that had Dylan on it?
DJ Tenderloin 6:49:04 PM
Classics!
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 6:49:07 PM
WPRB Fall Silent Drive starts MONDAY. Keep freeform free!
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 6:49:30 PM
Pat, I think so. I looked into some samples (and could not find a good version of The Roots' Dylan cover).
Robin 6:49:44 PM
@amy don't tell everyone the secrets!
Amy Lee 6:49:44 PM
The people want more Bob & Blow.
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 6:50:07 PM
This one I didn't know prior but it comes from our own Mr. Mike Lupica.
Randy Marthins 6:50:14 PM
Of all the thousands of words Bob Dylan put together "you'd know what a drag it is to see you" has to be the harshest burn in musical history - in the Pre-Taylor Swift Era, anyway
DJ Tenderloin 6:50:27 PM
I saw The Roots do Masters of War - was that the one?
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 6:50:42 PM
Yep! I saw some crowd-filmed versions but nothing useful.
DJ Tenderloin 6:51:20 PM
Yeah it was super cool when they busted it out - that was at the Tower I think.
DJ Tenderloin 6:51:37 PM
They kinda mashed it up at one point with War Pigs
DJ Tenderloin 6:52:23 PM
Have you seen Vertigo, Jon?
Randy Marthins 6:52:57 PM
A band I used to see would mashup the Beverly Hillbillies Theme w/War Pigs
sean burns 6:53:01 PM
Roky and the Elevators! That version of baby blue really stood out
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 6:53:01 PM
I have seen Vertigo but I am really looking forward to seeing Vertigo again. It will be my reward for building the Fall Membership Drive site tomorrow!
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 6:53:18 PM
Sean, my hope is that there's a special something for each special someone tonight.
DJ Tenderloin 6:54:06 PM
Randy - mashup the Beverly Hillbillies Theme w/War Pigs?! I would like to hear that
DJ Tenderloin 6:56:30 PM
the thing I like about Vertigo is that Jimmy Stewart has a certain rep, you know he's so often a hero, a good guy. And in Vertigo he's completely unhinged and psychotic! Also that shot where they're kissing and they're spinning in one direction (on a spinning table) and the camera is doing a 360 in the opposite direction. crazy!
Randy Marthins 6:57:51 PM
@tenderlion - 1990? doc Watson's, Philly https://youtu.be/JmE0xYmTEu0?is=uoA85P1fLW4OP_nb
DJ Tenderloin 6:58:48 PM
thx Randy - I will check it out!
David Shortell 7:02:35 PM
I don't understand why the mystery of "Vertigo" had to be spoiled so early in the film (i.e., Judy's flashback).
donutage 7:04:35 PM
This has been terrific, Jon! Alas, it is time for me to go feed my feeble human body again. (After this Yo La, of course)
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 7:04:51 PM
I hope to make it hard for you to turn away from the radio!
Randy Marthins 7:04:54 PM
@david We're not gonna talk about Judy. No we're not gonna talk about Judy at all
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 7:06:38 PM
I shoulda done all three hours of covers.
DJ Tenderloin 7:07:13 PM
The actual story in Vertigo is preposterous. I feel like it's more a study in grief & madness - and highly stylized.
DJ Tenderloin 7:07:53 PM
I also had no idea the Ramones did that
donutage 7:08:01 PM
Yoou are making it VERY difficult Jon, but needs must!
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 7:08:34 PM
That is all I need to hear.
donutage 7:09:28 PM
<3 Jon, <3 chat!
Marcus 7:10:11 PM
I don't think I've ever heard him singing in English
Marcus 7:10:48 PM
Spanish and Portuguese
Marcus 7:11:14 PM
Where's his accent?
DJ Tenderloin 7:14:16 PM
Marcus - agreed!
DJ Tenderloin 7:14:50 PM
I've heard him interject some english words before, but not a whole song
Marcus 7:15:20 PM
It's hard to eradicate a B razilian accent
DJ Tenderloin 7:16:05 PM
I heard a zydeco band in New Orleans tear this song UP!
Marcus 7:16:44 PM
Actually "Dust in the Wind" is sung quite often in Brazil and with good accent
DJ Tenderloin 7:16:47 PM
I wonder if they got the idea from Fairport
Zach 7:21:24 PM
I'm back. speaker died and i was too locked in to do anything about it
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 7:21:43 PM
This was one of my absolute favorite discoveries prepping tonight's show.
DJ Tenderloin 7:23:53 PM
this is super cool. and 77 - they're at the peak of their powers...
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 7:24:54 PM
People don't realize how much some Big Black and Shellac guitar parts are owed to Cheap Trick.
DJ Tenderloin 7:25:02 PM
Bring back Bun E!
Randy Marthins 7:25:39 PM
Before I refreshed the playlist/chat I thought 'this sounds like a certain band from Rockford, Illinois'
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 7:26:09 PM
I didn't "get" Cheap Trick until I lived in Chicago and people played me stuff that wasn't just what I would see on the teevee.
Randy Marthins 7:26:45 PM
Ric Nielsen played on Foo Fighters "Sonic Highways"
DJ Tenderloin 7:27:58 PM
I was the right age for Cheap Trick. I've always wanted someone to do a good punk rock cover of Dream Police!
Randy Marthins 7:28:55 PM
Cheap Trick lyrics can be "problematic" in 2026
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 7:30:16 PM
Up The Creek the song is less problematic than Up The Creek the movie!
DJ Tenderloin 7:31:22 PM
No late Cheap Trick. Only early Cheap Trick.
DJ Tenderloin 7:33:11 PM
I'm sure the first thing I ever heard was I want you to want me. That song was everywhere when it came out. and then I saw a picture of Ric Nielson in a magazine and that was it. He may have had the guitar with the 7 necks or whatever.
Randy Marthins 7:33:31 PM
I once did a Bob Dylan illustration for a friend that had Bob wrapped up in a blue ribbon with all the lyrics to "Tangled Up In Blue" upon it - it was a cheap trick, I know, but she bought it
Patrick White 7:33:33 PM
A fave Dylan cover non musical. Howard Cosell reciting the lyrics of Forever Young after the second Ali vs Leon Spinks fight
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 7:34:10 PM
Oh that would have been good to include, Patrick.
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 7:34:55 PM
"Do I play the Isaac Hayes version of Lay Lady Lay or go with US Maple's rendition instead?" is my sort of Sophie's Choice.
Marcus 7:35:13 PM
I just realized the line about dealing in slaves and something inside of him dies is from Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" - where's Mats Sabbath to back me up?
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 7:35:30 PM
Could have used Mats several times tonight, I agree.
DJ Tenderloin 7:36:10 PM
There must be like crazy versions by William Shatner and the like
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 7:36:16 PM
He's probably busy with that new eleven disc live Ween behemoth.
DJ Tenderloin 7:38:56 PM
I was right - he does a spoken word version of mr. tamborine man from his 1968 record The Transformed Man
DJ Tenderloin 7:39:14 PM
Next time!
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 7:39:26 PM
Considered it but also thought it might not play well in the theater.
DJ Tenderloin 7:40:42 PM
something funny about William Shatner not playing well in a theatre. I mean he can chew some scenery!
Patrick White 7:42:48 PM
Thanks for great show tonight Jon . Inspired programming. You can always tell a Northwestern Man !
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 7:42:49 PM
While I am (I can admit) not a huge Dylan Guy, I also didn't want to seem like I was taking the piss with a captive audience.
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 7:43:07 PM
Thank you Patrick. Beat Maryland at field hockey tomorrow night, NU!
Zach 7:43:16 PM
This is my favorite Dylan song
Randy Marthins 7:44:30 PM
My niece plays FH for PSU - she scored a double OT winner vs Iowa last year
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 7:44:41 PM
Heck yes, Randy.
DJ Tenderloin 7:45:10 PM
I totally went through a "dylan period" in my 20's where I listened to everything I could get my hands on. I like Dylan. What would the world be without?
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 7:45:13 PM
I went to the Northwestern / Princeton field hockey game the Sunday before last and even with an umbrella I got soaked in a fashion rarely experienced previously.
RofflelecticDyslexia 7:45:31 PM
I like the gospel feel, this was Dylan's come to Jesus period, so I wonder how much intent went into this?
Randy Marthins 7:47:10 PM
@.Jon even got her name read on B1G plays of the week
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:48:26 PM
Jon, it was great to hear the Bryan Ferry cover version!
Jon Solomon 🐧 (host) 7:50:11 PM
Yeah I especially dug that one, Rob.
RofflelecticDyslexia 7:52:18 PM
I was actually riding around on my scooter for that rainy day, got soaked too, but it wasn't really cold.
David Shortell 7:58:26 PM
I just learned now that Judy Collins was the first to put out that song; not Nico.
Rob from Maryland 🦀 8:00:08 PM
This has been a fabulous show tonight, Jon, ty!!
