Serenade to a Cuckoo with Jerry Gordon

Oct 9, 2026 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM

Music

With Jerry Gordon

Serenade to a Cuckoo & Jerry's Room: first a two hour jazz show featuring new, modern jazz releases or special jazz features, followed by a one hour show of various themes that are non-jazz, including pop, r&b, rock, and blues from the forties thru the seventies! You will love it!

10.9.26

We are calling the first two hours a Modern Jazz Party: no theme today, just great, hip modern jazz with fun being part of the equation. We will then go into Jerry's Room and examine the NEW Box Set of Rubber Soul released this last week!

Brian D 12:23:17 PM
Cold duck ---> cold gin. Way better. Morning after New Year's party = cold duck time. If someone did not finish the champagne and other wines

Patrick White 12:26:56 PM
You might think you’re cool …..but you’ll never be as cool as David Amram on French horn accompanying Anita Ellis vocals on Pull My Daisy
Brian D 12:27:01 PM
Four Roses = WHISKEY. I think Wild Irish Rose was a forty fired wine-like product
Mike Constantine 12:28:08 PM
Yep ...Wild Irish Rose was like 18% APV
Patrick White 12:30:37 PM
Shout out to underrated performer Donnie Iris retiring at age 83 due to health issues
jimbooooo 12:31:17 PM

Mike Constantine 12:31:53 PM
Ah Leah is a great song
Patrick White 12:34:15 PM
Cmon Jerry the quintessential Philadelphia song is Phillies Fever by the Phillies in 1976
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:35:39 PM

Dive bar that had (has?) live jazz & cheap booze. Crowd Pleasers were sax, hammond, bass, drums. Patrick knows!
Patrick White 12:39:14 PM
Thomas He’s 42. Last title in 2020 . Still a good player but this teams not winning a title . Atrocious fast break defense and poor under 2 minute decision making
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:39:56 PM
Amazing shared memories by you Mike and Patrick. Glad to have them as Cuckoo listeners!
Rofflelectic TM 12:41:55 PM

Rofflelectic TM 12:42:30 PM
I wonder if I can get a case of Ripple on Amazon?
jimbooooo 12:44:09 PM
Roffle, just go to the side door of one of the refineries near the airport, they make Ripple, too!
jimbooooo 12:44:41 PM
You can run a weed whacker on straight Ripple
thomas hatch 12:45:25 PM
@ jimboooo I use it to clean engine parts
Mike Constantine 12:45:30 PM
I don't believe they've sold Ripple in Pa in over 50 years
Rofflelectic TM 12:47:41 PM
@jimboooo, when I lived in Seattle the first Red Hook brewery was in Ballard and they used to throw the half filled bottles in the dumpster outside and a friend taught me that trick. Priceless as a poor young person... :)
Patrick White 12:47:42 PM
Mike Ripple never tasted better than North Broad Streets Bicentennial Lounge.
Patrick White 12:48:31 PM
Those dark green empties were everywhere on Vine Street in the 70s
Mike Constantine 12:49:13 PM
There's a bar I never visited....
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:49:37 PM
Ripple unites the Cuckoo listener! Hi Roffle TM (trademark noted)
Rofflelectic TM 12:50:20 PM

Mike Constantine 12:51:17 PM
I looked it up, Gallo stopped making Ripple in 1984
Patrick White 12:51:25 PM

Rofflelectic TM 12:52:44 PM
Valid option at that price point thomas.
Patrick White 12:52:56 PM
I got drunk on ripple and interrupted that Rashied Ali concert. The bouncer , a young Russ Woessner gave me a beatdown
thomas hatch 12:53:50 PM
I think you may have deserved it Patrick
Mike Constantine 12:53:52 PM
In my teen years we drank Boones Farm....6 cents a bottle
Mike Constantine 12:54:05 PM
86
Rofflelectic TM 12:54:42 PM
And most of that 6 cents went to taxes!
Mike Constantine 12:57:08 PM
Ha!
Patrick White 1:01:37 PM
Speaking of calypso rhythm we mourn the loss of Trinidadian calypso giant The Mighty Sparrow
Russell Woessner 1:06:27 PM

Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:17:33 PM
Hi Russ!
Rofflelectic TM 1:18:06 PM
That's a great system Jerry. I knew someone that worked at Johnny Brenda's and he would get to see some great stuff.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:19:02 PM
It was great, Roffle, and got to play cards with the other vendors before the games and concerts
Rofflelectic TM 1:19:43 PM
A whole subculture of gambling too! lol
JimBoTunji 1:20:46 PM
I got to meet Olatunji! He played in W Philly in an auditorium w seats. Towards the end, the only white guy there (Me) had to stand up to dance. Half the crowd was instantly on their feet.

Mike Constantine 1:22:44 PM
I worked at the Bucks County Drive In....you don't want to know what I saw
JimBoTunji 1:22:46 PM
After the show, I talked to the band. Finally I asked where "Baba" was. they said right behind the curtain there. As soon as I pulled back the curtain, he threw his arms around me. Got to talk for about 20mns. He loved the idea of spreading literacy. Great Man!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:23:53 PM
OMG, what a story! Yes, he certainly spread the word of AFrican culture and its Joy to honkies in 1968!

Chef Emeril Lagasse 2:09:45 PM
the "(second version - take 2)" of norwegian wood is one of my favorite things on the box set so far!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:10:13 PM
Hey Chef! Thank you for your comment. Please offer more!
Mike Constantine 2:10:17 PM
Agreed Chef
Chef Emeril Lagasse 2:10:21 PM

Elias Throckmorton 2:10:51 PM
'knowing she would?" Wood is good.
JimBoTunji 2:11:01 PM
If my girlfriend was a Furry, I would say she has a great Fuzz (b)ass!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:11:02 PM
And in each case, the take they chose was always the best.
Chef Emeril Lagasse 2:11:10 PM
almost makes me think of it as a step towards the eventual "tomorrow never knows" in its "drone"-y ness
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:11:39 PM
Excellent point
Chef Emeril Lagasse 2:11:57 PM
very true @jerry! as a musician who attempts recording sometimes, it's always encouraging to hear things like this to remind me that even the beatles had to workshop their songs heavily to get them to where they ended up
thomas hatch 2:12:04 PM
Yes this is the departure away from pop into the psychedelic
Mike Constantine 2:12:19 PM
Makes sense, Tomorrow Never Knows was the first worked on for Revolver
Elias Throckmorton 2:12:24 PM
Can a horse be a furry? They do sweat .
Mike Constantine 2:12:59 PM
They can be in a hurry
Elias Throckmorton 2:14:00 PM

Elias Throckmorton 2:15:42 PM
I did get banned from the Horseshoe Curve chat. trains and sh*t
Patrick White 2:16:50 PM
The Epstein files. Mike Epstein good fielding first baseman . Got a WS ring with Oakland Athletics. Members of the Jewish sports hall of fame
Chef Emeril Lagasse 2:17:52 PM
Blew my mind when I learned how early Tomorrow Never Knows was recorded - when they were still actively touring! Crazy that the guys still playing classic rock n roll covers on stage were simultaneously in the studio making crazy stuff
Mike Constantine 2:18:48 PM
It was a game changer Chef.
Elias Throckmorton 2:18:59 PM
Sandy Colfax was a lefty
Elias Throckmorton 2:19:11 PM

thomas hatch 2:21:03 PM
Ringo was the first to puff and said “ feels like the ceiling is getting lower” LOL!
Mike Constantine 2:21:07 PM

thomas hatch 2:21:27 PM
Nice MC
Elias Throckmorton 2:22:10 PM
lets remember- Just intonation was what the western classical music had to re tune. god bless Robin.
Mike Constantine 2:23:30 PM
This song kinda loses it timing towards the end.
Chef Emeril Lagasse 2:23:43 PM
Saw someone write that "The Word" is kinda like a precursor to "All You Need is Love" and all their other love anthems. Songs about love the concept, not loving someone
Chef Emeril Lagasse 2:23:51 PM
@Mike I notice that in Michelle too
Mike Constantine 2:24:32 PM
Indeed Chef
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:24:37 PM

Mimi had his own cosmic metronome
thomas hatch 2:27:39 PM
Jimi
Elias Throckmorton 2:28:49 PM
Brian Epstein was the Beatles' manager, not their producer. He discovered them in 1961, secured their recording contract with Parlophone, and managed their business affairs and image until his death in 1967. The Beatles' producer was George Martin, who oversaw their studio recordings. I did not know that.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:29:09 PM

Always got a kick out of the comedy duo of Brill and McCall telling their tale of invitation to appear on the Ed Sullivan show . Night of the show they were informed you’re opening for the Beatles.
