"The Dark End of the Street" by James Carr. Serenade to a Cuckoo with Jerry Gordon Fri Sep 25 with Jerry Gordon on WPRB Princeton 103.3 FM

Welcome, everybody, to Serenade to a Cuckoo with Jerry Gordon!

Hi Jerry!

Happy Friday to Jerry and everybody! The Phillies look like a gunfighter with no bullets left. Hey Roffle!

Rofflelectic, welcome. You could come with your own trademarked logo with that name.

Station ID cut off my favorite part where they say "the clarified butter...". I always get a little hungry there.

Hi Rick. great to hear from you. No bullets, no gun. Nutin'

OM John OM

Hey Brian!

Hey Brian, not to many people no that section in these parts!

I listened to about 100 minus 30 sleep hours of the 4 day 100 Hour John Coltrane Celebration on WKCR. That was wonderful.

Nice!

This is appropriate for a religious service

Greetings to Jerry and his listeners. Perhaps you should have did a live remote from that John Coltrane Church in San Francisco

Hey Patrick!

Attended Phillies game last night. Stormed the PR office after the game demanding a refund. They said Sir this is a free complimentary ticket. I said what about pain and suffering

Was able to attend the Coltrane 100 concert in Love Park past Wednesday. Well done and very good attendance.

Absolutely, Patrick. You've got it! Need to be lawyaered up for those rip-offs!

Great players on that Clifford Jordan lp

Trademark it is. :)

Now I dare anyone to mess with you!

Speaking of trademarks, there goes one now. :)

Still some remaining Coltrane events this weekend. Check out Ars Nova website

Jerry, you are the only one that is really carrying the Coltrane torch these past weeks at ol prb. A look through the playlists this week and I was surprised how under-represented John Coltrane was here. Sad. But happy today! Thank you!

This is the trip... this is the best part.... Great story Jerry! R Crumb comes to life in Madison!

Thank you, Brian. You bring alot to the station with your knowledge and commentary

This is the track that got me hooked on Trane.

Yeah so crisp bright and up front sounding on the Selflessness lp. Love this one

True that!

Rick, which version. Do you remember?

Jerry, yeah, it was the one from the Selflessness LP.

I played the hell out of that LP, almost as much as I wore out Miles Kind of Blue.

This is soooo good!

Another 5 Star Cuckoo listener, musician, and keeper of the cosmic flame

Rick AND the Roffle-man of many personalities

Reaching for the stars he was. Great reed/horn/microphone etc on this day. Everything lined up right.

I attended a service at the Coltrane church in San Francisco. I think Coltrane would not have approved of it. His spiritual quest was much wider than the narrow Christian iconography that the church presented him as part of. Plus they tried to prevent me from leaving the hours-long service before it ended. Very cult-like, Not recommended!

Thanks Russ . Reminds me of my Synanon experience.

Luckily the Peoples Temple rejected my application.

lol I can picture Patrick and Joe Pass at Synanon

Hi Russ, Mok! I guess I'll pass on the Stan Getz Synogogue of Drug paraphernalia

A cell phone rang at my synogogue during Yom Kippur and rabbi said, "That better be God:

Jerry, LOL!

Heard "Good Bait" a good number of times over the past week and did not get tired of it. Great take. Just right.

Rick, true story. I'm sure he wasn't the first to use it

Brian, one of the greatest bebop songs ever. Dizzy Gillespie on RCA

Brian, 2 CD set. One of the greatest bebop CD sets ever

Coltrane really nailed Good Bait. Great take. Yes, great tune on other recordings too. Tadd Dameron composed

Paul Chambers had a real "Night in Tunesia" feel.

Hey John Cenevivatrane! It did!

Russ, can you share any of the Trane events you went to in this last week?

Trane was bad ass right there

Today: Coltrane in Japan 1966 w/ Yasuhiro “Fuji” Fujioka https://dice.fm/event/eony66-coltrane-in-japan-1966-w-yasuhiro-fuji-fujioka-25th-sep-urbn-annex-screening-room-philadelphia-tickets

Tonight: Isaiah Collier Plays Coltrane https://www.philamuseum.org/events/isaiah-collier-plays-coltrane

This is simply good music!

Hello, this is Miles Davis, from Jazz. I lost my credit card. Can you PayPal me some money so I can make Kind of Blue 2? YES OF COURSE! Cool... I will bring John Coltrane. What up, it's Trane....

Ha!

Tomorrow: John Coltrane's A Love Supreme: The Man, The Music and His Timeless Message w/Ashley Kahn https://dice.fm/event/oe9p8m-john-coltranes-a-love-supreme-the-man-the-music-and-his-timeless-message-washley-kahn-26th-sep-the-study-at-university-city-philadelphia-tickets

Only two discs of more than 25 hours of Coltrane live performances recorded by saxophonist Frank Tiberi. I want to hear ALL of the tapes!

I saw a panel discussion with Reggie Workman, Odean Pope and Andrew Cyrille relating their memories of Coltrane yesterday. Enlighening!

The events that I listed here are free or pay what you wish.

Kai Winding was a student of the great Brass Teacher, Dr. Donald S. Reinhardt. Doc's studio was at 1720 Chestnut St. back in the day.

There's the connection, Rick! Thank you! Some excellent history from you, Rick! Now we know why Kai Winding beat out the Stones!

Thanks for another great show Jerry. My daughter gets married in the back yard tomorrow. We expect a big storm. Should be exciting and memorable. I just spent $900 to get the sides added to the tent. I'm hoping that is the juju needed to steer the storm another direction so it was a waste of money. Today;s show is the sound track for setting up.

Camden NJS Frank Tiberi still with us at 97

Good job by Rick. Center City was crawling with music teachers back then .

I always enjoyed Frank Tiberi's tenor sax artistry when he was with the Woody Herman Thundering Herd.

The bari sax is really gettin' down on this tune.

And I can never get enough of JB!!!

Camden NJ also provided us with Patty and the Emblems and their wonderful hit Mixed Up Shook Up Girl

A deep album track from Patrick

Everyone have a great weekend and hopefully we will be talking Phillies playoff baseball next week. Hope the wedding goes well Vilda

Sunday: Jazz Bridge Fishtown Jazz Festival. Free https://www.jazzbridge.org/events/fishtown-jazz-festival-2026

Thanks Patrick - Jerry - My wife is once again loving this soul music review. Keep this up and I might get a little tonight ;-

VC, I'm going to make it louder, also

turn it up baby!!

Russell you are awesome! Black Squirrel is a few blocks away. I hope the rain stays a few blocks even further away. :)

thanks Jerry - she was smiling ear to ear.

That's a good sign!

I did a tribute concert a long time ago to John Coltrane where I collaborated with Larry Harlow and we wrote and performed a song together. The whole event was aired live on WRTI - It was a heady affair. Oliver Lake played at it too.

It was at International House - I'd love to hear a recording of that.

wow! Our bro Larry Harlow! Impressive!

This is where you will be tonight right before you pass out

Someone else hooked it all up. I wrote a tune called Cherain for Trane - Cherain is the hot horseradish so it is the Jewish equivalent of Salsa

I am often on cloud 9 by 9am

Love the Harlow stor!!!!!!!

Thanks for this broad-spectrum of scholarship Jerry! Always a treat!

Jerry, you and John Coltrane is always a killer combination! Your show is where I always go to hear the best music AND narrative on this planet! Everybody enjoy your weekend!

Thanks for the great tunes Have a good weekend friends

Great, great show. I can still see Nixon saying "Sock it to me?"

OMG

Flashbacks

@John, Compared to this president, he was not a crook, just a tad corrupt.
