Hi Zach!
DJ Esoterica 1:04:43 PM
My dad was a teachers union leader/folksinger in the 60s and knew all these old protest songs.
dan Cochrane 1:04:55 PM
Hi yourself, all others, er…I smell Irish Spring. Sorry

Lizbot (host) 1:07:17 PM
@Dan Cochrane - For real! And definitely informed The Pogues' sensabilities!
Lizbot (host) 1:08:07 PM
@DJ Esoterica - Yes! I grew up with all those "Sing Out" magazines, the whole Shanachie catalog, knew all these lyrics!
dan Cochrane 1:09:30 PM
I love the band in “Local Hero” film! Half the reason to rewatch it.
DJ Readie 1:11:54 PM

Hi Steve Volaric! Happy Labor Day!
Lizbot (host) 1:17:45 PM
LONG story, but my granddad wound up working hard labor for McAlpine! They used Irish to build the highways in England and sent them back without pay!
Amy Lee 1:18:26 PM
Perhaps Derek Warfield & the Young Wolfe Tones will play Mt Holly St Pats again-they've been past few yrs.
DJ Readie 1:18:43 PM
ar ndóigh, Lizbot!

Lizbot (host) 1:19:59 PM
Hi Amy Lee!
Amy Lee 1:20:18 PM
@Lizbot -THAT is a story that deserves to be heard.
Lizbot (host) 1:20:57 PM
@AMy Lee - Oh wow, I'd see that! Didn't realize they came to Mt Holly! A show my dad would've seen were he still with us!
Lizbot (host) 1:21:04 PM
@Amy Lee - How long ago??
DJ Readie 1:21:10 PM
To the land of me ancestors I go! This is getting me so psyched!!!
Lizbot (host) 1:22:38 PM
@dan Cochrane - For real. They WOULD "throw you back behind the big mixer" rather than pay you, but these guys were banned from working in the shipyards, so they had very few choices, hence they became "long-distance men," shipped to England for hard labor
Lizbot (host) 1:23:17 PM
@DJ Readie - YAY! Hattie always sings this song with me!
DJ Readie 1:24:29 PM
Awesome, Lizbot!!! Passing on the legacy!!! 💚💚💚
Lizbot (host) 1:24:37 PM
@Ossy - Cute Bulbasaur /Tara photo!
Lizbot (host) 1:25:07 PM

iConJohn 1:25:43 PM
This show is banging Lizbot! I feel like I should be listening to this in an Irish pub like Fergie's or Plough and Stars. Please revisit something like this again next March.
Lizbot (host) 1:25:57 PM
Hi iConJohn!
dan Cochrane 1:26:10 PM
My grandpa Jack Cochrane was a brick layer, he’d smoke his cigar down to a nub, then stick that in his pipe. 🤦‍♂️
DJ Readie 1:26:15 PM
So beautiful! Music- the healing force! All blessings to your Da, Lizbot!
Ossy 1:26:17 PM

Amy Lee 1:27:07 PM
@Lizbot. They've played at least the past three years.
Lizbot (host) 1:27:18 PM
@iConJohn - THanks! FOr sure, I have in the past, but not in recent St. Pat's. IN the past i've done more instrumental trad on St. Pat's, like Bothy Band instros and Chieftains, Planxty etc. Fergus Carey of Fergie's was my neighbor in Center CIty back in the early 2000s! I used to attend his block parties,. The beer was FLOWING
Lizbot (host) 1:28:11 PM
@dan Cochrane - haha, I can still smell my uncle's cigar smoke! that is a potent fragrance that never leaves me!
Lizbot (host) 1:30:06 PM
@Amy Lee - Oh wow! Good to know! My mom still lives very close to there, I'll have to go with her!
Lizbot (host) 1:31:33 PM
The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem appeared on Pete Seeger's Rainbow Quest public television show, from the mid-60s, which used to re-air on PBS when I was a kid

Lizbot (host) 1:43:47 PM
The Vatican officially supported Franco's fascist dictatorship during the Spanish Civil War, insanely, largely because Franco was a devout Catholic. The 15th Brigade were Irish freedom fighter volunteers who defied The Pope and traveled to Spain to fight with the Spanish resistance
Christine 𓅓𓅥 𓅊 1:43:47 PM
Sounding fantastic, LizBot! I'm feeling all the feelings as I listened to The Town I Loved So Well. ☘️ And your stories and reminisces are priceless.

Hi Christine 𓅓𓅥 𓅊!
Lizbot (host) 1:44:43 PM

Punk time oh yeah
Lizbot (host) 2:06:15 PM
Hi TAndy!
Lizbot (host) 2:07:09 PM
@Brian D - haha, same. My dad adored Christy Moore, thus I knew what a "mickey-dodger" was from an early age, and other colorful names for nuns!
TAndy 2:07:32 PM
Hey Liz! Happy Laborwave everyone
Lizbot (host) 2:07:58 PM
@DJ Readie - Sinead's version is so achingly beautiful. RIP queen. She always got dragged through the mud
Lizbot (host) 2:10:19 PM
@TAndy - Glad you're enjoying it!
DJ Readie 2:15:11 PM
So true, Liz! The Queen. I’m learning her spirited version of Oro Se do bheatha bhaila in Gailge to celebrate her, the call to action.
Brian D 2:17:13 PM
My dad was a teacher, involved in the NJEA union back in the day although we lived in PA he taught Spanish in Jerz for 2-3 decades. He also had many run-ins with the nuns in the 1930s - 1940s. Then he had enough of that and he and mom did not really get into any kind of religion. Dad's ancestors way back were from County Carlow (a big hall or house or commons ...not quite a castle has our surname on it there). Mom did not have Irish ancestors but LOVES the music and dancing from Ireland.
Lizbot (host) 2:17:47 PM
If anyone wants more info or just a very entertaining movie about Northern Irish punk origins, watch the 2013 movie Good Vibrations, a biopic pf Terri Hooley, the founder of Good Vibrations label and record store, who put out all these early punk singles and was the heart of the punk scene there
Brian D 2:20:37 PM
Read Green Suede Shoes the autobio of Larry Kirwan, leader of the band Black 47. Nice guy, met him once when a band I was in opened up for them at John & Peter's back 25 yrs ago or so. Never got into them but that night was a special one. He and band delivered. His stories in his book great as well. He was & maybe still doing tours of Ireland. Would love to have him as a host/tourguide.
DJ Readie 2:22:42 PM
Cool, Brian! I’ll keep Larry K. on my radar when I’m over there
Lizbot (host) 2:23:36 PM
@DJ Readie - Nice! Did you see that excellent biopic about her from a few years back? Very worthwhile
Lizbot (host) 2:24:42 PM
@Brian D - Both my parents were NJ public school teacher NJEA union members!
Lizbot (host) 2:26:05 PM
@Brian D - My whole family except my brother and I went through Catholic schools. My dad was scarred by it and did not want that for us. THose nuns meant business! Some were great, others wielded rulers on kids as young as 5
DJ Readie 2:26:41 PM
Yes! And, for later, here’s the Gailge version of Oro- with ref. To Grace O’Malley, the Pirate Queen, who famously stood up to Queen Elizabeth I as her equal! https://youtu.be/4Sje2VYw99A?is=Op8TiJpibEiMg_bN
Lizbot (host) 2:31:03 PM
