@Mats Sabbath - Yeah i know the Kalahari Desert is meerkat-land, and it stretches through parts of South Africa. I found that show deeply comforting for some reason. Just meerkats chomping scorpions and keeping watch for snakes and occasionally "instigating a burrow move"!

@Mats Sabbath - My mom had several Paul Theroux books on our shelves when I was a kid so I read THe Mosquito Coast. His son is documentary filmmaker Louis Theroux, who had a show on IFC in the late 90s called "Louis Theroux's Weird Weekends" that I loved back then. It was all him doing this "gonzo journalism"-style reporting on lunatic fringe stuff. It was fun then, but now it's too real!

Brian Fifield was an Abbey Road engineer in the late ‘70s. EMI was getting rid of the Beatles’ mellotron (!) and Brian took it home for a year. His wife made him take it back because it was so big. The story is online somewhere.

@Roffleaphonic - Yeah, I learned that lesson as a kid with piano lessons when I tried to recreate reverb on my crummy Casio in my bedroom. Of course we didn't have a grand piano, just an upright, but later, better keyboards could not recreate that sound, but have their own appeal

At the Bethlehem Bach festival I saw an ensemble that played Renaissance brass instruments, accompanied by an electric piano. I asked the player why they tolerated such a non-period instrument. She put me in my place by saying the keyboard could be set to pre-modern tuning by flipping a switch! So handy!

@Lizbot, When I was in High School in Glassboro the lovely College had the Wilson Music Building right across the street with Grand pianos in some of the practice rooms. And they have many practice rooms.

@Roffleaphonic - It's just SO tempting to wander down those unpaved sandy roads and paths! My friend the Pineys conservationist is always trying to discourage or just stop off-roading vehicles doing stunts in the paths, Destroys the wildlife AND they often get stuck!

More about Bethlehem- Musikfest just wrapped up. They had a NJ band called the Dracu-las (like the Shangri-las). They used to be more goth but a new guitarist moved them into surf rock. A shame.

@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - That Music to Climb the Apple Tree By Beat Happening compilation came out in '03, fairly early in this show's history, and I played it a LOT on air back then!

I kind of forgot how good the fender Rhodes can sound. He just had that and some little small keyboard sitting on top of it which he didn’t play too much. Some kind of string synthesizer or something like that. I’m not really sure. I was hoping it’s a clave, but it wasn’t.

@Lizbot, Off roading is fun, but the trails need to have some kind of management. Not everyone out there is a gentleman or woman.

Coughs, fuck-ups, out of tune moments all left in the album (One Foot in the Grave, K Records). I admire that.

@Roffleaphonic - Yeah, I mean i think the trails are best kept for walking! I ALSO managed to get in a pickle canoeing up the Mullica River during a drought in my teen years in the Pineys, but that was the fault of the camp counselors!
