Hello Hello! Today is a summer songs theme: beach, sea, summer days!
Number 6 5:00:47 PM
Peas in!
Lizbot (host) 5:01:01 PM
Hi Number 6!
Number 6 5:02:01 PM
I went on a 2 hour tour on a sailboat out of Cape May last week.
Number 6 5:03:07 PM
https://www.bayshorecenter.org/our-ship/
Lizbot (host) 5:04:48 PM
@Number 6 - Oh nice! My cousin and her kids are in Cape May right now, as is a friend who is a professional photographer, and both spotted and took photos of dolphins there yesterday!
JimmyCarter IsMy Hero 5:04:50 PM
Hi! Wow, havent heard this in a long time, off to a Great Start!
Lizbot (host) 5:05:36 PM
@Number 6 - "Meerwald" sounds German! I know wald is forest and I think meer is ocean!
Lizbot (host) 5:05:43 PM
Hi JimmyCarter IsMy Hero!
Lizbot (host) 5:06:43 PM
@JimmyCarter IsMy Hero - I love Robyn H! He's still making music and painting! I love the doc about him, Sex, Food, Death... and Insects
JimmyCarter IsMy Hero 5:07:27 PM
Documentary? I will keep an eye out for it!
Number 6 5:08:16 PM
BCB operates the authentically restored 1928 oyster schooner A.J. MEERWALD, New Jersey’s official Tall Ship, as a hands-on sailing classroom throughout the region.
Lizbot (host) 5:08:20 PM
@JimmyCarter IsMy Hero - It's from the late 2000s. Good stuff! I saw it back then and I remember him goofing around with a traffic cone. He's a funny guy!
Mats Sabbath 5:09:06 PM

Lizbot (host) 5:10:21 PM
Hi Mats Sabbath!
Lizbot (host) 5:10:27 PM
@Mats Sabbath - ha!
Number 6 5:10:35 PM
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A._J._Meerwald
Mats Sabbath 5:10:43 PM
Meerwald def in the dutch/german language root! Meerkats
Mats Sabbath 5:11:10 PM
Number 6 very cool!
Number 6 5:11:13 PM
It was owned by the Meerwald family, apparently.
Lizbot (host) 5:11:55 PM
@Number 6 - oh interesting because I was in LBI last week and saw a tall ship in the distance while on the beach! I couldn't believe it. Both George & I zoomed in with our cameras and confirmed it was an old tall ship. I guess it was the Meerwald!

Mats Sabbath 5:13:40 PM
Bruce! Da man with da four track recorder in Colts Neck!
Lizbot (host) 5:13:45 PM
@Mats Sabbath - Oh yeah! Why did I never think of the fact that "meerkat" is blatantly a Dutch world, and of course because of Dutch colonization of South Africa! Never thought of it and I watched SO much "Meerkat Manor" in the late 2000s!
Lizbot (host) 5:14:36 PM
@Mats Sabbath - Meerkats - One of the only creatures who can safely metabolize scorpion venom! Someone has to eat them!
addie “5 snakes” plum 🐍 5:14:44 PM
Heyyyyyyyy, happy Thursday all!
Lizbot (host) 5:15:04 PM
@Mats Sabbath - I couldn't resist the Bruce, having just been down the shore, and I and my daughter have a fondness for this song!
Mats Sabbath 5:15:11 PM
dj, I am fascianted by dutch south afrikan culture , what Die Antwoord call Zef culture. Trying to learn the language since I know some dutch, but they take it in wild directions..
Lizbot (host) 5:15:12 PM
Hi addie “5 snakes” plum 🐍!
Lizbot (host) 5:15:55 PM
@addie “5 snakes” plum 🐍 - I hope you're feeling a lot better after last week!
Mats Sabbath 5:16:01 PM
Always great to hear The Boss on NJ soil. Or airwaves.
Alex from Media 5:17:04 PM
Hi Lizbot and crew!
Mats Sabbath 5:17:12 PM
dj, meerkats are amazing. I'd love to be able to metabolize scorpion venom. Prolly pretty trippy.
Lizbot (host) 5:17:22 PM
@Mats Sabbath - Yeah i know the Kalahari Desert is meerkat-land, and it stretches through parts of South Africa. I found that show deeply comforting for some reason. Just meerkats chomping scorpions and keeping watch for snakes and occasionally "instigating a burrow move"!
Lizbot (host) 5:17:31 PM
Hi Alex from Media!
Mats Sabbath 5:18:15 PM
Lizbot re Meerkat Manor yesssssssss. Love it.
Lizbot (host) 5:18:22 PM
@Mats Sabbath - I just saw Bruce earlier this summer in Philly, and it was special because it was the first time my kid came along!
Lizbot (host) 5:19:08 PM
@Mats Sabbath - That show was narrated by Sean Astin, aka little "Mikey Walsh" from The Goonies.
Mats Sabbath 5:19:32 PM
dj, awwwwww, that is great. Took my son to Dweezil Zappa, Flipper, Subhumans. (Separate gigs.) Those are beautiful memories.
Lizbot (host) 5:20:23 PM
@Mats Sabbath - Also, meerkats are matriarchal! I also love that they used the term "roving males" a lot on that show
Lizbot (host) 5:21:18 PM
@Mats Sabbath - My daughter loves going to shows, but even though she's loved Bruce since she was little, she had never seen Springsteen live until this summer!
addie “5 snakes” plum 🐍 5:21:53 PM
@lizbot I am a whole new person! Revived.
Mats Sabbath 5:22:04 PM
Roving males! The Rover (Led Zep song and bonkers aussie movie.)
Lizbot (host) 5:23:08 PM
@addie “5 snakes” plum 🐍 - That's good to hear! Sorry you were sick on yr birthday!
Lizbot (host) 5:23:31 PM
@@Mats Sabbath - I know the Zep song, but not the movie...what's that about??
Lizbot (host) 5:24:12 PM
@addie “5 snakes” plum 🐍 - I hope the sneks kept you company while you recuperated!
Mats Sabbath 5:24:16 PM
dj I wuz hoping to get to Namibia at some point but it looks less and less likely. Thankfully we have Paul Theroux books, a writer who has traveled extensively in Africa. Great writer.
addie “5 snakes” plum 🐍 5:24:39 PM
It was a colossal bummer @Lizbot.
addie “5 snakes” plum 🐍 5:24:52 PM
Guess I’ll wait for 60 now.
Mats Sabbath 5:25:26 PM
dj, The Rover is an amazing movie. Australia "ten years after the collapse", but it is very different than the Mad Max approach. Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson.
Lizbot (host) 5:26:50 PM
@Mats Sabbath - My mom had several Paul Theroux books on our shelves when I was a kid so I read THe Mosquito Coast. His son is documentary filmmaker Louis Theroux, who had a show on IFC in the late 90s called "Louis Theroux's Weird Weekends" that I loved back then. It was all him doing this "gonzo journalism"-style reporting on lunatic fringe stuff. It was fun then, but now it's too real!
Lizbot (host) 5:27:29 PM
@addie “5 snakes” plum 🐍 - That is really crappy. Have a belated celebration next year??
Lizbot (host) 5:27:55 PM
@addie “5 snakes” plum 🐍 - I know that feels like "cheating" or something, but still, it's reasonable!
Lizbot (host) 5:29:26 PM
@Mats Sabbath - huh. I should check that out. Have you ever seen the post-apocalyptic Australian crazy armored cars adventure movie that predates Mad Max, The Cars That Are Paris by Peter Weir?? It's pretty nutty. I bought a VHS of it in the 90s
Lizbot (host) 5:30:34 PM
@Mats Sabbath - My favorite car in it as a Volkswagon Beetle covered in metal spikes that looks like a hedgehog
JimmyCarter IsMy Hero 5:34:41 PM
I love Galaxie 500, I can't believe this was available to me in my youth and I did not know.
JimmyCarter IsMy Hero 5:35:07 PM
I did not discover them unitl pandora dragged them into my profiel
Mats Sabbath 5:35:24 PM
dj, will check out the Peter Weir! Nice find!
Lizbot (host) 5:35:25 PM
@JimmyCarter IsMy Hero - Theyre so good! And perfect lazy summer day songs!
JimmyCarter IsMy Hero 5:35:51 PM
Missing this scene in my youth is one of my regrets. Perhaps I was not ready...
Rob from Maryland 🦀 5:39:49 PM
Hello everyone
Lizbot (host) 5:42:17 PM
Hi Rob from Maryland 🦀!
Lizbot (host) 5:44:26 PM
@Mats Sabbath - Peter Weir is a great filmmaker who took some real creative risks! Speaking of Paul Theroux, Weir is actually the won adapted Theroux's "The Year of Living Dangerously" to film!
Lizbot (host) 5:45:45 PM
@Mats Sabbath - Correction!: I meant Theroux's "The Mosquito Coast"! Weir directed the film adaptation!
Lizbot (host) 5:47:00 PM
@JimmyCarter IsMy Hero - Well it's not too late to see some of those bands! Galaxie 500 is no longer, but I am always surprised how many bands from my youth are still touring and sounding good!
Lizbot (host) 5:48:16 PM
@JimmyCarter IsMy Hero - Including Pavement from my high school/college years, who I just saw again a couple weeks ago at The Dell in Philly, a public outdoor stage run by Phila Parks & Recreation! Gonna play them next, in fact!
Mats Sabbath 5:51:27 PM
The Pavement documentary is excellent.
Lizbot (host) 5:51:36 PM
@Mats Sabbath - I have yet to see that!
Mats Sabbath 5:51:48 PM
RIP Gary Young, the wild heart of Pavement.
Mats Sabbath 5:52:56 PM
Spiral Stairs of Pavement sent me a postcard once in the 90s but I lost the goddamn thing. #fml LOL
Lizbot (host) 5:54:11 PM
@Mats Sabbath - Pavement is a band I heavily associate with one of my first jobs, a bookstore that closed at 10 pm where I met the majority of my closest friends from my early 20s, and after shifts we'd drive to Philly Chinatown for late-night Ho Sai Gai dinner in my friend's 70s Chevy Citation junker blasting Slanted & Enchanted and Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain in her tape deck
Lizbot (host) 5:54:44 PM
@Mats Sabbath - Re postcard: Drats! But also cooL!
Mats Sabbath 5:55:37 PM
Chevy Citation! Nice! I can hear Crooked Rain via ChevyPhonics.
Lizbot (host) 5:57:35 PM
@Mats Sabbath - Just imagine also the smell of weeks-old greasy pizza boxes in that car! Just mixed up with piles of magazines.
Lizbot (host) 5:59:53 PM
@Mats Sabbath - During the aforementioned Pavement show a couple weeks ago, Bob Nastanovich rolled off the stage directly in front of me and sang in my face!
Ted 6:01:43 PM
My favorite movie from down under is Meet The Feebles. Peter Jackson in his rebellious stage.
Lizbot (host) 6:02:41 PM
@Mats Sabbath - To add to the olfactory / visual picture of my friend's old Citation: There was a thick strata of free "advanced reader edition" books all over the floor and back bench seat.
Lizbot (host) 6:02:47 PM
Hi Ted!
Porch-time 6:04:30 PM
Greetings everyone! First time listening to your show. I’m smiling~
Lizbot (host) 6:04:54 PM
@Ted - I saw Meet the Feebles with my old friend Mikers, fittingly an industrial designer and puppeteer (and still is professionally to this day!) nearly 3 decades years ago and the main thing I remember is the puppets having nasty mouth sores!
Lizbot (host) 6:05:31 PM
Hello Porch-time!
Mats Sabbath 6:06:01 PM
dj, Bob N is great! Nice feller from Kentucky. That is really cool.
Mats Sabbath 6:07:19 PM
puppet mouth sores!! I love the wprb chat.
JimmyCarter IsMy Hero 6:09:52 PM
Pavement came to Bend, that was good!
Lizbot (host) 6:13:14 PM
@Porch-time - I'm glad you found the show!
Lizbot (host) 6:13:34 PM
@Mats Sabbath - Bob seems like a fun guy!
Lizbot (host) 6:14:55 PM
THIS Donovan song absolutely feels like one of the songs Ween was parodying in "The Mollusk" song
Lizbot (host) 6:15:35 PM
@JimmyCarter IsMy Hero - Nice! I had to miss them when they played Philly's The Met a few years back due to getting Covid AND my husband breaking his hip had the same time! So it was nice to catch them under way better circumstances!
Alex from Media 6:16:09 PM
Glad the summer songs are about food too. browsing a recipe book for dinner ideas tomorrow.
Lizbot (host) 6:17:43 PM
@Alex from Media - Ah, happy to help inspire the menu sonically!
Lizbot (host) 6:18:40 PM
@Alex from Media - Prawns, courtesy of The Soft Boys, followed by Crabs, Donovan-style, and some mollusks from Ween
Alex from Media 6:19:21 PM
Sounds like a zuppa di pesci.
Lizbot (host) 6:21:25 PM
@Alex from Media - Yeah, or a paella!
Alex from Media 6:22:44 PM
The boss was in Valencia for the total eclipse, eating paella at the time.
Lizbot (host) 6:23:31 PM
@Alex from Media - zuppa di pesci or "supper d' Pesci" = the dinner the mom of Joe Pesci's character, Tommy DeVito, is cooking up in the middle of the night in Goodfellas when her son and his business associate drop by for her cooking on the way to dump a body!
Lizbot (host) 6:24:13 PM
Speaking of Aussie things, Makers of the Dead Travel Fast, (on now), are from the early 80s Sydney post-punk and new wave scene!
Mats Sabbath 6:28:44 PM
Nice Ween cut! Jersey Shore off-season drunken brilliant album.
Danosaur🦖 6:29:07 PM
Hey, everybody!
Lizbot (host) 6:29:12 PM
Hey Danosaur🦖!
Porch-time 6:29:39 PM
I agree with your 6:28 comment, Mats~
Danosaur🦖 6:29:42 PM
Sitars and bongos – I can practically smell the incense
Lizbot (host) 6:30:33 PM
@Mats Sabbath - So good! My favorite Ween album! Infused with NJ magic (by way of Bucks County, PA)
Mats Sabbath 6:30:38 PM
Porch-time I interviewed Gener for Paste Magazine about food in Ween songs. Nice guy. Upbeat.
Lizbot (host) 6:31:05 PM
@Porch-time - I wish Ween were still performing, but alas
Mats Sabbath 6:31:51 PM
I am a The Pod (1992) diehard, speaking of Bucks County, PA! It is their Nebraska (4-track album).
Lizbot (host) 6:32:24 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - haha, yeah it's not a Donovan album without some bongos and a reference to a tinker or a carnival!
Mats Sabbath 6:32:46 PM

Roffleaphonic 6:33:31 PM
Banana silk and hurdy gurty's too. lol
Roffleaphonic 6:33:50 PM
Hey there. Nice set kido.
Mats Sabbath 6:34:03 PM
Hurdy Gurdy Man! Butthole Surfers do a great cover.
Lizbot (host) 6:34:28 PM
@Mats Sabbath - Oh nice! I often think of the relish with which they sing "tri-colored pastas!" in "your Party" on La Cucaracha!
Lizbot (host) 6:34:42 PM
Hi Roffleaphonic!
Mats Sabbath 6:34:55 PM
Lizbot, Gener talked about that in the interview!
Lizbot (host) 6:35:39 PM
@Roffleaphonic - Thanks! Yeah, hurdy gurdy men, "Gypsy Dave," tinkers, crabs, ferris wheels, teas, bread baking, seabirds!
Mats Sabbath 6:36:03 PM
Nebraska! Amazeballs album start to end.
Roffleaphonic 6:36:17 PM
@Matts, I saw Butthole Surfers in Austin, but I remember much. That a lovely blurry.
Alex from Media 6:36:36 PM
....relish..... tri colored pasta.....tea.... bread....amazeballs....
Lizbot (host) 6:36:45 PM
@Mats Sabbath - Oh man, does this still exist online? These days who knows?! So much online media is just erased! When that album came out, my husband and I cracked up at that song and still quote it!
Mats Sabbath 6:37:08 PM
Roff nice! You saw 'em in their hometown more or less.
Danosaur🦖 6:37:09 PM
@Lizbot - your list of Donovan song subjects should be a mad libs card set
Lizbot (host) 6:37:27 PM
@Mats Sabbath - So good! Another album I got the kid into young! Otherwise how could I call myself a born New Jerseyian?
Mats Sabbath 6:37:45 PM
dj, I put the interview link in the chat.
Danosaur🦖 6:37:49 PM
@Lizbot - or maybe a bingo card
Lizbot (host) 6:38:01 PM
@Mats Sabbath - Nice, thanks! I will copy it!
Mats Sabbath 6:38:07 PM
dj, sounds like you are raising the kid right!
Roffleaphonic 6:38:37 PM
@Lizbor, I was pissed when Napster folded, but it evolved into YouTube and the like. I felt like they burned the library of Alexandria again.
Lizbot (host) 6:38:39 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Oh yes, that's perfect! I would 100% play DonovanBingo if such a thing existed!
Porch-time 6:39:10 PM
@Lizbot yes on the Ween. Today I just saw a clip of them playing the Court Tavern from the 90s. The very same song. Forgot how low the ceiling was in there!
Alex from Media 6:39:15 PM
awww Richie Havens gonna make me cry.
Lizbot (host) 6:39:23 PM
@Alex from Media - Free association food exquisite corpse Doubleplusgood food feast mash-up!
Mats Sabbath 6:39:26 PM
Roff good point! Ah, Napster. And the virus-ridden LimeWire.
Space Cowboy 6:39:31 PM
Man good to hear Richie on the radio
Ted 6:39:46 PM
Brian Fifield was an Abbey Road engineer in the late ‘70s. EMI was getting rid of the Beatles’ mellotron (!) and Brian took it home for a year. His wife made him take it back because it was so big. The story is online somewhere.
Mats Sabbath 6:39:50 PM
Porch-time that ceiling was ridic LOL
Lizbot (host) 6:40:28 PM
@Roffleaphonic / @Mats - I need to track down that Butthole Surfers HUrdy Gurdy cover, but I recall hearing it a long time ago!
Lizbot (host) 6:40:36 PM
Hi Ted!
Mats Sabbath 6:40:46 PM
Ted, that Mellotron fell into the hands of trent reznor and can be heard on "Piggy" on The Downward Spiral!
Lizbot (host) 6:40:48 PM
Hi Space Cowboy!
Danosaur🦖 6:40:55 PM
Never heard this Richie Havens song before but I like it
Roffleaphonic 6:41:03 PM
@Matts, LimeWire turned into poison for sure.
Mats Sabbath 6:41:36 PM
Ted, trent said the Strawberry Fields tapes were still in the Mellotron.
Lizbot (host) 6:42:17 PM
@Space Cowboy - My dad LOVED Richie Havens and took me to see him many times at the [now long-gone] Tin Angel in Old City, Philly and at the folk fest and Appel Farm. I always think of him stomping around on stage in his dashiki, playing so hard he always broke many strings. Loved him
Mats Sabbath 6:42:24 PM
Roff, I had enough bad experiences with Napster I didn't even bother with LimeWire.
Porch-time 6:43:27 PM

Mats Sabbath 6:45:00 PM
Ozzy LOL the link
Ossy 6:45:15 PM

Roffleaphonic 6:45:19 PM
@MattsI think Camper Van Beethoven's did a wonderful cover of Pictures Of Matchstick Men too. I love that kinda good revamp.
Ossy 6:45:29 PM
Sabbath - LMAO
Mats Sabbath 6:45:50 PM
Roff they did! They nailed that cover.
Ossy 6:45:55 PM

Roffleaphonic 6:47:20 PM
@Ossy, I miss Tsunami on That network. It was quite good. Like really, really good. :)
Mats Sabbath 6:47:48 PM
Roff I think the CVB cover surpasses the original.
Roffleaphonic 6:48:25 PM
Me too Matts
Ossy 6:49:06 PM
rof - Same, although i think it still goes on via adult swim. Toonami back in the 90s and 2000s were at its most pinnacle!
Ossy 6:50:20 PM
Same with CN friday nights and their crossover Cartoon Network city bumpers like this https://x.com/seupodead/status/1146493303547973632
Alex from Media 6:52:39 PM
Oh I had Summer feeling in my head for weeks, couldnt remember who did it. Thanks Lizbot!
Lizbot (host) 6:52:54 PM
@Porch-time - ah, nice! Yeah, Havens rarely wrote his own songs, so I figured he didn't write Handsome Johnny, but I didnt realize Louis Gossett Jr. wrote that!
J S 6:52:57 PM
I saw Richie Havens at Convention Hall in Asbury Park the same year Bruce Springsteen's Steel Mill band played the Rutgers cafeteria!
Lizbot (host) 6:55:09 PM
@Ted - HA. Okay, reverse that mellotron story in my household! I LOVE mellotrons and my husband makes fun of me for it and insists the digital mellotron samples on programs like GarageBand sound exactly the same, but in a blind taste test (deaf hear test??), I can ALWAYS tell the difference! We also have a real film vs digital decades-long argument. FILM, hands down. Come ON!
Lizbot (host) 6:55:27 PM
Hi J S! oh wow, both great shows!
Roffleaphonic 6:55:32 PM
@Ossy, OMG I forgot about The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy. God I loved that one too!
Lizbot (host) 6:56:00 PM
@Ossy - Tara looks like she's having a good time!
sean burns 6:56:08 PM
Aaaaaaah....
Lizbot (host) 6:57:07 PM
@Alex from Media - oh wow, I am happy to bring it to the fore of your brain! No one is quite like Jonathan Richman!
sean burns 6:57:17 PM
You put
J S 6:57:33 PM
Drove down Route 128 last week too!
Lizbot (host) 6:57:42 PM
Hi sean burns!
sean burns 6:58:07 PM
Hi Liz just got out of the pool the catch some of the Jonathan Richman tune, one of my favorites
Ossy 6:58:12 PM
liz - oh yeah, a wondrous silly time like my birthday week and weekend getaway!!!
Ossy 6:58:46 PM
rof - billy and mandy are so unadulterated wacky horror LOL
sean burns 6:59:06 PM
The only other guy that I can think of that could captured the lonely ache that is part of Summer was Brian Wilson.
Ossy 6:59:26 PM
always dreamed of mandy and raven interacting, being extremely similar! https://nerdalmighty.tumblr.com/post/796262266158891008/amp
Danosaur🦖 6:59:32 PM
The Led Zepplin cover I didn't know I needed
Lizbot (host) 6:59:36 PM
@Mats Sabbath / @Rofflephonic - Yeah, I never used Napster or its later copycat programs like Limewire. A friend installed Limewire on one of my old computers in the early 2000s and it was def a virus factory
Lizbot (host) 7:00:09 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Petra Haden's a cappella covers are always great, but this one might be my favorite of all
Dale Hazelton 7:00:35 PM
evening.
Roffleaphonic 7:00:35 PM
@Lizbot, my friend has two Mellotrons, on is for parts and and an extra rack of tapes.
Roffleaphonic 7:00:49 PM
one
Lizbot (host) 7:01:25 PM
@sean burns - Absolutely. Brian Wilson really captured it. On other versions of this theme, I would have some Beach Boys, but I don't know if I'll get any in today
Lizbot (host) 7:01:34 PM
Hi Dale Hazelton!
Danosaur🦖 7:01:59 PM
Oh, yeah. Love this Belle and Sebastian song
Lizbot (host) 7:02:13 PM
@Roffleaphonic - oh yeah, mellotrons are the kind of thing where you need one ...or two...just for parts!
Lizbot (host) 7:03:14 PM
@Roffleaphonic - I also love Rhodes keyboards and I play piano/keyboards, so I briefly owned an old Rhodes, but when that thing needed repair, I had to get it to a guy out of state and the thing weighed a ton! I eventually gave up on it!
Roffleaphonic 7:03:29 PM
Tobias play something Beach Boys like earlier. You are off the hook there. :)
Lizbot (host) 7:04:16 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Was happy to have a bit of a twee mid/late 90s Belle & Sebastian fan reunion with many friends and acquaintances from that time period at the Tigermilk/If You're Feeling Sinister anniversary weekend in NYC early this summer!
Roffleaphonic 7:05:16 PM
Electric Piano? Yeak those things are a bit much in this day and age.My Korg makes those noises. :)
Lizbot (host) 7:05:29 PM
@Roffleaphonic - Always happy to play Beach Boys!
Lizbot (host) 7:06:04 PM
@Roffleaphonic - I like Korgs, but 70s Rhodes have this sounds I can't get enough of!
Roffleaphonic 7:06:07 PM
Follow the passion. No worries
Danosaur🦖 7:06:15 PM
@Lizbot - Did you call it a Twee-kend Get Together?
J S 7:06:17 PM
When nobody wanted them I bought a Mellotron with a mixed choir / mixed strings / flute tape for $50, spent 2 days making it work, and gave it to a friend. He still has it...
Lizbot (host) 7:07:44 PM
@J S - Does it still work?? Does yr friend use it? A lot of larger instruments with high maintenance demands you can get cheaply, but the upkeep isn't so cheap sometimes of course
Lizbot (host) 7:08:19 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - HA. We SHOULD have! I will retroactively call is a "Twee-end Get-Together" thanks to you
Lizbot (host) 7:08:57 PM
@Ossy - I never really saw either show Raven or Mandy were in! Which shows?
Roffleaphonic 7:09:31 PM
Fair enough, The Korg can also sound like a grand piano , but not really anything like sitting at one.
Alex from Media 7:09:39 PM
re Sargasso Sea First heard Coailfhionn Rose some years ago. Vinyl purchases ensued. Looked it up, pronounced "keelin"
Alex from Media 7:10:37 PM
Caoilfhionn* sue me
Lizbot (host) 7:12:11 PM
@Roffleaphonic - Yeah, I learned that lesson as a kid with piano lessons when I tried to recreate reverb on my crummy Casio in my bedroom. Of course we didn't have a grand piano, just an upright, but later, better keyboards could not recreate that sound, but have their own appeal
Ossy 7:12:28 PM
liz - was spreaking to roffle, but those girls are from 2000s cartoon network series, Grim Adventures of Billy And Mandy(Mandy and her best friend befirend with the Grim Reaper by force, after losing a bet in limbo) and Raven (from DC's Teen Titans, a group of 5 teenage superheroes led by Robin to defend their city quadrant and the entire planet)
Roffleaphonic 7:12:34 PM
OMG JS! That is so cool. My friend also bought them on the cheap back when synths came out strong.
Lizbot (host) 7:13:54 PM
@Alex from Media - Caoilfhionn Rose's voice is so gorgeous!
Lizbot (host) 7:14:33 PM
@Ossy - ah, after my time! I WISH Carton Network had existed when I was younger, but I have seen some shows on it as an adult and also with my daughter
Ted 7:15:36 PM
At the Bethlehem Bach festival I saw an ensemble that played Renaissance brass instruments, accompanied by an electric piano. I asked the player why they tolerated such a non-period instrument. She put me in my place by saying the keyboard could be set to pre-modern tuning by flipping a switch! So handy!
Roffleaphonic 7:16:37 PM
@Lizbot, When I was in High School in Glassboro the lovely College had the Wilson Music Building right across the street with Grand pianos in some of the practice rooms. And they have many practice rooms.
Ossy 7:17:18 PM
liz - ooo nice and similarity for me, seen very older school stuff like little of 'i love lucy' and 'julia'!
Lizbot (host) 7:18:16 PM
@Ted - haha! Also I am willing to bet no one there was willing to haul a harpsichord around!
Roffleaphonic 7:19:38 PM
I loved Lucy also Ossy... :)
G Jax 7:19:39 PM
Has a guitar player with a healthy respect for keyboards I like seeing the keyboard talk. Speaking of which I saw Rhodes mentioned earlier. Saw young gun Silver Fox last night. That dude is good. The whole band was good. I know they’re rather XPN-ish but it’s a really cool show.
Mats Sabbath 7:20:48 PM
I got a Chevy with a Mopar cam - Ween, I'll Be Yer Jonny On the Spot
Lizbot (host) 7:20:50 PM
@Roffleaphonic - oh nice! My mom took some teacher training classes at Glassboro when it was more of a teacher training school in the 60s. She played piano! I wonder if she ever stumbled upon the WIlson Music Bldg pianos or if those were even there back then
Lizbot (host) 7:21:27 PM
Hi G Jax! I will have to check out more Silver Fox!
Ted 7:21:33 PM
There was s harpsichord available, but it was tuned in the Baroque fashion and therefore inauthentic.
Lizbot (host) 7:22:04 PM
@Mats Sabbath - Nice Ween reference spotting!
Mats Sabbath 7:22:33 PM
I have always loved that line/song.
Roffleaphonic 7:22:41 PM
@Lizbot the building was late 60's/ early 70's I think. It was there when I landed in Glassboro.
Mats Sabbath 7:23:53 PM
NJ Darkness is real.
Roffleaphonic 7:23:55 PM
It was also thee teacher college. I loved that place.
Roffleaphonic 7:25:40 PM
NJ has many bodies in the Pine Barrons... For strange reasons. Best to get out quickly. lol
Ted 7:29:24 PM
Holding Sparks Over The Summer till the end?
Mats Sabbath 7:29:24 PM
I love the Pine Barrens. Gem of Jersey, along with WPRB. Lol Roff
Lizbot (host) 7:29:25 PM
@Mats Sabbath - I'll Be Yer Jonny On the Spot is my favorite hyper Ween song!
Mats Sabbath 7:30:24 PM
Lizbot, it doesn't translate live, but on The Mollusk it is a great song. Punky Ween LOL
Lizbot (host) 7:30:48 PM
@Ted - ah! Anachronisms abounded! Put them in the stocks!
Lizbot (host) 7:31:41 PM
@Roffleaphonic - ah, yeah just a bit after my mom's time. she was there 1960
Lizbot (host) 7:31:56 PM
@Ted - I might run outta time!
Lizbot (host) 7:32:58 PM
@Roffleaphonic - I got horribly lost in the Pineys with my mom in the early 90s. Felt like allll day. It was quite literally HOURS before we made it out. I learned by lesson!
Lizbot (host) 7:34:21 PM
@Roffleaphonic - I told that story many times, and then The Sopranos came along with that Pine Barrens episode, and even though I never saw that series from beginning to end, I appreciated that episode. Captured the experience well, with a touch of Miller's Crossing
Lizbot (host) 7:35:19 PM
@Roffleaphonic - And I grew up going to both YWCA camp Matolly AND Girl Scouts Kettle Run / Inawenwin in the Pine Barrens from ages 6 to 17 and STILL I managed to get super lost!
Mats Sabbath 7:35:27 PM
Wilderness is needed, if for nothing else, as a refuge for scoundrels and villains. - Ed Abbey (born in Appalachia) Quote reminds me of the PBs.
Lizbot (host) 7:35:33 PM
@Mats Sabbath - More Ween upcoming!
J S 7:35:51 PM
The Mellotron still works! My friend learned how to keep it going. If they aren't on the road they last longer. Eric from Blue Oyster Cult bought all the spare parts from US distributor Dallas Arbiter but he ran out.
Mats Sabbath 7:36:01 PM
Awesome, dj! Awesome Sound.
Ossy 7:37:23 PM
totally!
Mats Sabbath 7:38:02 PM
Whoa-cean Man!!
Lizbot (host) 7:38:31 PM
@Mats Sabbath - The Pine Barrens is truly a gem! Should never be developed! Natural gas pipeline plans were shut down there years ago, thankfully! See the excellent David Scott Kessler doc "The Pine Barrens" if you havent yet! Stars my friend (and designer of one of the old WPRB shirts) Allen Crawford, naturalist and park ranger!
Lizbot (host) 7:38:45 PM
@Mats Sabbath - Whoa-cean!
Mats Sabbath 7:38:45 PM
Gene Ween singing about Nietzsche's Overman cracks me up.
Danosaur🦖 7:38:58 PM
Ah, a nice, weird Ween song
Mats Sabbath 7:39:20 PM
Danosaur are there any other kind?
G Jax 7:39:35 PM
Have to say young gun, silver fox ain’t exactly my thing but I appreciate good musicianship. Very derivative though my wife was singing lyrics of 70s songs to every song they played. But it was still cool.
Danosaur🦖 7:40:33 PM
@Mats Sabbath - Ha1 True
Ossy 7:40:43 PM

Lizbot (host) 7:40:50 PM
@J S - Good to hear the mellotron is still going! So much is about finding parts and "new" old stock that's no longer made with old electronic instruments! I gotta get to that synth museum, speaking of...
Roffleaphonic 7:41:23 PM
I totally get getting lost in the Piney's. It all looks the same. No hills, just sandy old trees.
Lizbot (host) 7:41:36 PM
@G Jax - Yeah, I am not familiar with Silver Fox, might not be my thing, but glad you got something out of the show!
Mats Sabbath 7:41:40 PM
Ozzy indeed! Ween is also in It's Pat the Movie. And Voodoo Lady is in Dude Where's My Car?
Ossy 7:42:53 PM
AWESOMENESS
Lizbot (host) 7:42:57 PM
@Roffleaphonic - It's just SO tempting to wander down those unpaved sandy roads and paths! My friend the Pineys conservationist is always trying to discourage or just stop off-roading vehicles doing stunts in the paths, Destroys the wildlife AND they often get stuck!
Lizbot (host) 7:43:42 PM
@Ossy - haha, SpongeBob is truly an Ocean Man. I ate him in ice cream form from a truck by the beach last week! Cotton candy flavor!
Ted 7:43:45 PM
More about Bethlehem- Musikfest just wrapped up. They had a NJ band called the Dracu-las (like the Shangri-las). They used to be more goth but a new guitarist moved them into surf rock. A shame.
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:44:15 PM
I like this Beat Happening Song. I don't know the album however
Mats Sabbath 7:44:35 PM
Good ol' Beth'lem PA!
Danosaur🦖 7:44:43 PM
Someone should do a parody called Forever Mower - about cutting your lawn
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:44:48 PM
ah, B sides & rarities ... hmmm
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:44:54 PM
Hi Danosaur!
Danosaur🦖 7:45:05 PM
Hey Rob!
Mats Sabbath 7:45:41 PM
RobMD Beck's album on K Records is surprisingly good. Early Beck. Angry Beck. Surreal Beck.
Lizbot (host) 7:46:37 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - That Music to Climb the Apple Tree By Beat Happening compilation came out in '03, fairly early in this show's history, and I played it a LOT on air back then!
G Jax 7:46:41 PM
I kind of forgot how good the fender Rhodes can sound. He just had that and some little small keyboard sitting on top of it which he didn’t play too much. Some kind of string synthesizer or something like that. I’m not really sure. I was hoping it’s a clave, but it wasn’t.
Roffleaphonic 7:46:43 PM
@Lizbot, Off roading is fun, but the trails need to have some kind of management. Not everyone out there is a gentleman or woman.
Mats Sabbath 7:46:53 PM
Coughs, fuck-ups, out of tune moments all left in the album (One Foot in the Grave, K Records). I admire that.
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:47:25 PM
@Mats, good to know, I might look into it
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:47:56 PM
@Lizbot, too bad I wasn't listening to your show then
Lizbot (host) 7:48:03 PM
@G Jax - That Rhodes sound...I associate it with so many great 1970s electric piano songs!
Mats Sabbath 7:48:16 PM
RobMD it has lotsa bangers. I still remember the K Records tape with no song titles, black plastic.
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:49:11 PM
Old Orchard Beach!
Lizbot (host) 7:49:26 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - ah well, always can catch up on old releases heard on this program years later!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:49:46 PM
@Matt, the tape sounds amusing
Lizbot (host) 7:50:35 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - RIP Susan Anway! I loved her voice. Almost interviewed her when I went to Tucson a decade ago, but alas it didn't work out. She sent me her subsequent band's albums, post-early Mag Fields
Mats Sabbath 7:51:09 PM
Early Beck is hilarious af. The surreal humor of his poverty. (10th grade dropout)
Lizbot (host) 7:52:29 PM
@Roffleaphonic - Yeah, I mean i think the trails are best kept for walking! I ALSO managed to get in a pickle canoeing up the Mullica River during a drought in my teen years in the Pineys, but that was the fault of the camp counselors!
Mats Sabbath 7:52:50 PM
Really enjoyed the theme & show, dj. Great curation! Nice ode to summah. Loved the NJ pride too (Bruce, Ween, et al.)
Lizbot (host) 7:53:27 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Forever Mower! Ha! Make it!
Ossy 7:53:31 PM
great birthday present smells tonight, liz sands!!
Danosaur🦖 7:53:34 PM
This Yo La Tengo song fits with the twee aesthetic of Belle and Sebastian etal
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:54:07 PM
@Lizbot, yes, RIP Susan Anway :-( I remember you did a show honoring her?
Lizbot (host) 7:54:25 PM
@Ted - Wait...I might've heard a song by this the Dracu-las last october when vetting new songs for DevilPlusGhoul. I remember it was a bit rockabilly/surf rock
Lizbot (host) 7:54:34 PM
Thanks, Ossy!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:55:16 PM
This has been a great show (what we were able to listen to)! The perfect summer show
Danosaur🦖 7:55:51 PM
Thanks for the summer vibes, Lizbot
Mats Sabbath 7:56:16 PM
Love how summah segues into the lovely NJ Fall. Spooky season. New Water Damage album in October!
Alex from Media 7:56:39 PM
Thanks Lizbot! I almost might like summer now.

Roffleaphonic 7:59:49 PM
Thank Lizbot! See you the whereever that is, but next week in que'ed up. :)
Lizbot (host) 8:00:12 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Definitely what The Ladybug Transistor are going for!
Ted 8:00:27 PM
The Dracula-las began as a Cramps cover band. I liked them better pre-surf. They do a good Ike-ettes cover though
Lizbot (host) 8:00:29 PM
@Roffleaphonic - Thanks!
Lizbot (host) 8:00:55 PM
@Ted - ah! Will check out both eras!
Lizbot (host) 8:01:42 PM
@Mats Sabbath - NJ summers and NJ autumns are both beautiful, but i'm not ready to let go of summer!
Lizbot (host) 8:02:03 PM
Thanks for tuning in, everyone! See you next week!
