I especially like how the piano swims within and around the rest of the ensemble, it's ringing ever so slightly different from the warbly metallic clanging

And Laddio Bolocko is one of my all time favs!

I wonder what it would take for, say, the Big Ears Festival to bring Dewa Alit & Gamelan Salukat to the US?

Seems they have invented a new tuning, amazing.

There is an experimental gamelan group in NYC, but this is wilder.

I was lucky enough to play a Gamelon at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix! Worth the admission price alone!

When I lived in Chicago, I got to play the gamelan at UChicago a couple times. It was very cool, and I'm kinda sad I was only able to make it like twice

Yes! Only once for me!! Also another highlight was an authentic African Marimba. Full-sized w the the little things that vibrate under the keys. So cool. Dunno why we don't see that more often. You play drums/percussion?

Not really, I'm a viola player, but I've occasionally moonlighted (badly) as a percussionist

The taiko group in Philly has a small set of the gongs in their practice space, they don't use them in their performances of course.

I don't know if Tatsuya Nakatani does his gong orchestra thing anymore, but that's another way to play some cool, wild instruments

Another Jim Drummer? = Cool! Nakatani Orchestra? I play Gongs in a 'new' rhythmic way. Where is that orchestra?

Oh maybe he uses them, I saw it once it was just hanging gongs I think. A few groups use that space, it's in the back of a karate dojo.

He takes it with him when he tours and typically puts the "orchestra" together with people from the local area. It's all bowed gongs that he then kind of conducts and sometimes improvises alongside on a modified drum kit
