Hello Hello! I will be down the shore along the Barnegat Bay next Thursday, so this is the last Doubleplusgood for two weeks!
medukha 5:05:45 PM
hiii
Lizbot (host) 5:07:13 PM
Hi medukha/Hi Max T!
Lizbot (host) 5:08:38 PM
@medukha - Great show last weekend! I have been enjoying the album
medukha 5:09:59 PM
we're so glad! and happy to be here. this playlist is already cookin'.
medukha 5:10:08 PM
p.s. Asia is here too :^)
Lizbot (host) 5:10:39 PM
Hi Asia!
Alex from Media 5:13:41 PM
Lizbot! ++
Lizbot (host) 5:14:21 PM
Hi Alex from Media!
Alex from Media 5:23:30 PM
I like the way you and Commie Francis mine European music. All so new to me.
Lizbot (host) 5:24:26 PM
@Alex from Media - I love finding these albums. Glad you enjoy it!
Stephen Bluhm 5:24:49 PM
howdy!
Lizbot (host) 5:25:09 PM
Hi Stephen Bluhm!
Stephen Bluhm 5:25:40 PM
i’m on the way to a family reunion, have to run in a few but thought i’d pop in for the first time Work Crush + Mike Watt is heard.
Lizbot (host) 5:25:45 PM
Speaking of European bands, the main singer of The Chefs, who I'm playing now, has the best name ever: Helen McCookerybook!
Alex from Media 5:27:18 PM
Sounds like the way Monty Python would name their drag housewives characters.
Lizbot (host) 5:27:25 PM
@Stephen Bluhm - I'm glad you could make it! Luckily for your reunion plans, I'm playing it in the next 7-10 minutes
Lizbot (host) 5:27:48 PM
@Alex from Media - Yeah kinda does, now that you mention it!
Stephen Bluhm 5:28:15 PM
the singer sounds like Debsy Wykes
Lizbot (host) 5:32:01 PM
@Stephen Bluhm - haha, yeah! Debsy Wykes is a fun name too! And Dolly Mixture is ripe for punning. Of course when Dolly Parton donated a lot of funds to develop the Moderna covid vaccine early in the pandemic, we called it The Dolly Mixture!
Lizbot (host) 5:34:12 PM
@Stephen Bluhm - Up next!
Stephen Bluhm 5:38:10 PM
was it actually Debsy?
Alex from Media 5:38:32 PM
This is cool listening to a debut single with one of the creators! I like it Stephen Blum!
Alex from Media 5:38:56 PM
oops Bluhm. typo
Stephen Bluhm 5:39:29 PM
Thank you Alex!
Lizbot (host) 5:39:32 PM
@Stephen Bluhm - No, it was Helen McCookerybook (AKA Helen McCallum, but that's not as storybook-like!)
Danosaur🦖 5:40:23 PM
Hey, everybody. This Work Crush song is great
Lizbot (host) 5:41:41 PM
Hi Danosaur🦖! Glad you dig it! Check out Stephen Bluhm's solo albums as well!
Stephen Bluhm 5:42:03 PM
thank you Danosaur! it doesn’t hit the streaming sites until August 28. Fun teaser debut!
Lizbot (host) 5:43:05 PM
@Alex from Media - Check out Stephen's Out of the Nowhere Into the Here as well! Good stuff
Lizbot (host) 5:44:44 PM
@Stephen Bluhm - Played some Minutemen earlier in the set to tease this!
Stephen Bluhm 5:44:53 PM
so sorry i have to split. i’m in tunkhannock to gather with the Bluhms in the old country. ill
Stephen Bluhm 5:45:01 PM
i’ll be back
Lizbot (host) 5:46:48 PM
@Stephen Bluhm - I hope you have a good time. Greetings to the various assembled Bluhms!
medukha 5:54:20 PM
that was their first song!? what a tune
Ossy 5:55:34 PM
hi liz
Lizbot (host) 5:58:48 PM
Hi Ossy!
Lizbot (host) 5:59:32 PM
@medukha - Yes! Great song. Stephen Bluhm has a couple of albums under his own name that are great as well!
Danosaur🦖 6:00:14 PM
It was nice to hear a clever, modern protest song
Lizbot (host) 6:00:46 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Yes! We need those for sanity's sake!
Cody Brown 6:01:22 PM
Mike Watt handed me his broken low E string at the Chameleon Club when he was playing bass for J Mascis.
Alex from Media 6:02:34 PM
Had to look up grimalkin. If the internet is to be beleived it could be an old cat or old grumpy woman but also associated with magic as a "witches familiar".
TAndy 6:04:34 PM
Ohaidere
Lizbot (host) 6:04:35 PM
Hi Cody Brown!
Lizbot (host) 6:04:43 PM
@TAndy - Oh, hello!
Lizbot (host) 6:06:14 PM
@Cody Brown - haha, nice! Mike Watt fell down my friends stairs at the Honeymoon Music compound in Fishtown and lived to tell the tale. I saw him fully wipe out mid-sentence, then hop up unfazed to continue his story!
Lizbot (host) 6:06:59 PM
@Cody Brown - Did you keep it??
Lizbot (host) 6:08:17 PM
@Alex from Media - The name sounds very folklore-ish! Also sounds like it would be at home in The Dark Crystal
Alex from Media 6:14:45 PM
@ Lizbot, yes indeed.
Cody Brown 6:16:01 PM
Hahaha. Yeah I still have it
Cody Brown 6:17:04 PM
He had a cigar in his mouth the whole show and was slobbering on the front row. I still have that too
Lizbot (host) 6:18:01 PM
@Cody Brown - Oh man. He is so funny and talkative! Has a lot of great stories. Ever check out his podcast?
Cody Brown 6:19:23 PM
No but I will now. He’s great! I saw the Missing Men and they covered Wire and Funkadelic. Amazing!
Alex from Media 6:21:04 PM
That Cate le Bon bore some similarity to Tuatara's Koto Song.
medukha 6:21:50 PM
i recognize "l'amour est blue" from some euro collection cassette my dad used to play
Lizbot (host) 6:22:05 PM
@Alex from Media - huh, noted! Gonna have do to a side-by-side comparison some time!
Lizbot (host) 6:23:02 PM
@medukha - Written by prolific songwriter Andre Popp!
Lizbot (host) 6:23:52 PM
@medukha - I think the first recorded version was by Vicky Leandros, but there are so many versions
medukha 6:24:54 PM
just got lost in the wiki sauce looking into it
Lizbot (host) 6:25:13 PM
@medukha - haha, yeah, been there!
Alex from Media 6:25:29 PM
@ Lizbot Putting my vague memories to the acid test. Uh oh!
Lizbot (host) 6:26:28 PM
@Alex from Media - haha, I aim to stir up early music memories!
Alex from Media 6:27:37 PM
@ Lizbot. Love is Blue brought back childhood memories fer sher. An insturmental was a hit back in the 60's
Lizbot (host) 6:29:44 PM
@Alex from Media - Oh yeah, that Andre Popp music got around! I have a collection of his songs. Love Is Blue was def his biggest hit, but he had a few
Amy Lee 6:31:47 PM
Hi Lizbot Haven't been able to enjoy listening to your show at length for awhile.
Number 6 6:34:30 PM
Greetings!
Randy Marthins 6:38:12 PM
Just heard you mention The Rotunda (40th & Walnut) I've attended & played shows there & ABE's (40th & Market)!!!
Lizbot (host) 6:39:02 PM
Hi Amy Lee!
Lizbot (host) 6:39:09 PM
Hi Number 6!
Lizbot (host) 6:39:15 PM
Hi Randy Marthins!
Lizbot (host) 6:39:36 PM
@Amy Lee - I'm glad you were able to tune in today!
Randy Marthins 6:39:50 PM
Grimalkin might be a cat in "old possums book of cats" by TS Eliot, too?
Randy Marthins 6:40:48 PM
I'm actually drawing MICE at the moment; cats are eager waiting their turn
Lizbot (host) 6:41:07 PM
@Randy Marthins - Yes! The Rotunda is a great community space! All hail Gina Renzi, perpetual Rotunda caretaker and Foundation Arts leader! I have seen too many great shows there to count!
Lizbot (host) 6:42:23 PM
@Randy Marthins - Watch out, mice! When I spotted the word "mice" out of context, I thought of the Cleveland punk band before I thought of the animal!
Randy Marthins 6:43:23 PM
As it should be!!! And Jon Solomon's epic loop thereof, the day after a certain election night
Lizbot (host) 6:43:56 PM
@Randy Marthins - "Grimalkin" sounds like it would be a cat in Old Possum's Book of Cats, and maybe TS Eliot took inspiration from the name, but doesn't appear in those poems so far as I know
Lizbot (host) 6:44:45 PM
@Randy Marthins - Oh god, i know. What an epic act of defiance via radio, but such an intense time period!
Randy Marthins 6:45:19 PM
Also Eric Von Zippers "biker girls" in the Beach Movies were called Mice (the guys were Ratz)
Randy Marthins 6:48:11 PM
When D'Kid was little I was DETERMINED to keep her out of the black hole of Disney princesses so I showed her gidget & bbeach movies, as an alternate path LOL
Lizbot (host) 6:51:19 PM
@Randy Marthins - Funny you should mention those Beach Party movies!: A couple of friends have a movie podcast called "Mary Vs the Movies" where they watch movies the main host, Mary Jones, hasn't seen before and discuss, and they just covered a covered "Beach Blanket Bingo" and "The Girl In the Invisible Bikini"
Lizbot (host) 6:52:23 PM
@Randy Marthins - Those beach party movies were gunned out so quickly, they ran outta ideas quickly and "Invisible Bikini" never even features a beach! It's more of a sloppy haunted house movie!
Lizbot (host) 6:53:18 PM
@Randy Marthins - Gidget was like Citizen Kane compared to the Beach Party movies! It has a plot and everything!
Lizbot (host) 6:55:05 PM
@Randy Marthins - Gidget seemed to kick off the whole trend, and that story was based on the screenwriter's own teenaged surfer daughter. Then Frankie and Annette make an entrance. The later beach party movies are just a series of disjointed cameos!
Danosaur🦖 6:55:57 PM
I've heard that The Waters of March is hard to sing because the lyrics are lists of unrelated things
Randy Marthins 6:56:51 PM
American International studio was quite a machine!!! Beach movies and Poe!!!
Alex from Media 6:57:00 PM
@ Danosaur "Troublesome Waters"? I'll show myself out now.
Lizbot (host) 6:57:10 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Oh yeah, that kinda makes sense!
Danosaur🦖 6:57:56 PM
I think Dick Shawn played Dr Eric von Zipper
Lizbot (host) 6:58:44 PM
@Randy Marthins - yeah, they really milked that for all it was worth! I don't envy who had to cobble some sort of movie out of the piles o unrelated stock footage and cameos to assemble "The Girl In the Invisible Bikini"!
Randy Marthins 6:59:00 PM
@lizbot - gidget goes Hawaiian (Debra walley) has a pretty decent dance scene; almost "singing in the rain" quality
Lizbot (host) 6:59:35 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - I thought it was Harvey Lembeck from the Phil Silvers Show
Randy Marthins 7:00:24 PM
@danosaur - Harvey Lembeck was Von Zipper; dick Shawn was the surf bum in "it's a mad mad mad mad world"
Lizbot (host) 7:00:26 PM
@Randy Marthins - I've seen just stills and a small clip of Gidget Goes Hawaiian, but never watched it. Maybe while I'm down the shore next week I will!
Danosaur🦖 7:00:50 PM
@Lizbot - you are correct. Dick Shawn was in one of those bikini movies
Randy Marthins 7:01:07 PM
"Did you hear what mama said?" Was sampled by Jeff Beck
Lizbot (host) 7:01:48 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - There are so many random people in those movies! I think they got old Buster Keaton to appear in one of them!
Randy Marthins 7:01:57 PM
Cliff Robertson played Kahuna in Gidget
Lizbot (host) 7:02:03 PM
@Randy Marthins - oh, ha!
Danosaur🦖 7:02:13 PM
@Randy Marthins - maybe that's what I'm thinking of since he was a beach bum
Randy Marthins 7:02:52 PM
@lizbot - Elsa Lancaster too - the bride of Frankenstein/ Mary shelley
Randy Marthins 7:03:20 PM
@danosaur - glad to help
Danosaur🦖 7:04:16 PM
It's funny when you think about when those movies were made it was only 20 years on from Hollywood's Golden age so many of those actors were still out there looking for work
Lizbot (host) 7:05:28 PM
@Randy Marthins - Oh yeah, all those B movie aging horror stars were trotted out for cameos! Vincent Price turns up
Randy Marthins 7:05:39 PM
Jack Nicholson was in a bunch of the Poe movies with Roger Corman
Danosaur🦖 7:06:41 PM
Oh, yeah. Roger Corman was famous for catching people on their way up or the way down in their careers
Lizbot (host) 7:06:42 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Absolutely! That's why Buster Keaton turned up in a lot of teeny bopper movies as an old man. He was working til the end
Danosaur🦖 7:07:25 PM
Laura Nyro!
Lizbot (host) 7:08:21 PM
@Danosaur🦖/@Randy Marthins - Oh yeah, Corman caught a lot of stars before they were famous. Ever see that doc about his movie studio in Ireland, "It Came from Connemara!" It's a lot of fun! Local non-actors from the pub down the street appear in a LOT of the films!
Randy Marthins 7:11:20 PM
"It Came from Connemara" available on Prime & TUBI!!! Added to my watchlist, thanks!!!
Danosaur🦖 7:11:28 PM
Sounds like music for the Space Age
medukha 7:12:12 PM
tbh, maybe some plantasia will save the plants that aren't doing too well at home...
Lizbot (host) 7:16:05 PM
@medukha - Yeah, even my relatively hardy succulents could use some help this summer!
Lizbot (host) 7:16:27 PM
@Randy Marthins - It's a fun watch!
Dale Hazelton 7:16:31 PM
evening...been hanging for a bit...
Lizbot (host) 7:16:45 PM
Hi Dale Hazelton!
Lizbot (host) 7:17:50 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Yeah the fun version of the space-age future we were promised in the mid-century! Instead we have SpaceX.
Number 6 7:18:01 PM
@Lizbot- Did you see all of the tin toy wind up robots on Amazon yet?
Randy Marthins 7:18:35 PM
Do you know that prickly pear cacti can survive quite well in NJ? A yard I run past has them growing by their mailbox
Danosaur🦖 7:18:36 PM
@Lizbot - *sad trombone sound*
Lizbot (host) 7:20:00 PM
@Number 6 - I have not!
Lizbot (host) 7:20:44 PM
@Randy Marthins - If anything, my succulents were drowned from overwatering. Sometimes I get a bit overzealous with the water.
Danosaur🦖 7:21:02 PM
@Lizbot - yeah, I don't think this is the future any of us wanted
Number 6 7:21:35 PM
@Lizbot- You could create a whole army of killbots, but then you would probably wake up one morning all tied up like Gulliver, or worse.
Lizbot (host) 7:21:52 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Promised "Tomorrowland". What we got: Katy Perry in space
Roffleaphonic 7:23:24 PM
Space is known for voids...
Lizbot (host) 7:23:36 PM
Hi Roffleaphonic!
Randy Marthins 7:23:47 PM

Lizbot (host) 7:23:49 PM

Hi Danosaur, how is life in hot southern California?
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:29:29 PM
Howdy Lizbot!
Lizbot (host) 7:29:37 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - And their villainous ways are straight out of comic book plots!
Alex from Media 7:29:38 PM
Tonight seems to be "music by people in the chat" night.
Danosaur🦖 7:30:08 PM
@Lizbot - Yes they are
Roffleaphonic 7:30:10 PM
Honestly, I can't put nothing past space. The Voivoids sound like a heartbreaker. :)
medukha 7:30:41 PM
aw yay, that one's never been played on the radio before. thanks Lizbot!

@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - Very hot and humid here so just trying to stay cool
Alex from Media 7:31:33 PM
@ medukha I'll be exploring your music later. Very enjoyable.
Danosaur🦖 7:31:58 PM
Shoe gaze polka?!
medukha 7:33:47 PM
haven't yet ventured into polka, but we've been listening to a lot of weird al lately, so who knows what's to come!
medukha 7:34:28 PM
thank you! we do a lot of shapeshifting live. album on bandcamp, some other stuff including a collab with a Persian group we're excited to keep developing on YouTube!
Lizbot (host) 7:35:56 PM
@medukha - yay! Happy to debut it!
Danosaur🦖 7:36:07 PM
@medukha - Oh! I didn't realize that was your song. Very nice! Musicians right here in the chat
Lizbot (host) 7:36:30 PM
@medukha - Oooh, I have to check out the Persian collab!
medukha 7:37:05 PM
BTW, the track art for the song you played is by a Ukrainian-Canadian artist friend of ours, Olenka. She does a lot of traditional egg art (pysanky) as well as iron-work, so somehow these two came together, and we got a cool egg with a goat that's shattered
Lizbot (host) 7:38:05 PM
@Roffleaphonic - I'd listen to The Voivoids in the void of space
Lizbot (host) 7:38:37 PM
@Alex from Media - haha, "music by people in the chat" is basically the inadvertent theme today!
Lizbot (host) 7:39:58 PM
@medukha - oh nice! and you (asia) & I were just talking about pysanky on Sunday night (though I could not remember the name for it!)
Danosaur🦖 7:40:12 PM
Guess I'm going to have to start a band now that I've been in the chat
Lizbot (host) 7:40:28 PM
@medukha - poor egg goat! When is your next show, BTW?
Lizbot (host) 7:40:43 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - haha, do it!
Lizbot (host) 7:41:16 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - It would not be the first time! Hell, many former and current DJs started bands for the first time after being DJs here!
Lizbot (host) 7:42:32 PM
@Danosaur🦖 - Abbie from Mars and DJ Altitude Sickness, to name a couple, but there are many more. Commie Francis has some recordings too
medukha 7:42:34 PM
next show is tomorrow actually at Studio 34 in West Philly!
Danosaur🦖 7:43:17 PM
@Lizbot - the crossover from DJ to band/musician seems pretty natural
Roffleaphonic 7:43:24 PM
I am rather devoid of reasoning, but I'll follow your lead. :)
Lizbot (host) 7:43:32 PM
@medukha - Oh nice! May as well plug it here!
G Jax 7:46:06 PM
Been quite a while since I’ve been in these parts. For a second there sound a little bit like Chris Squier now not as much cool anyway howdy Liz.
Lizbot (host) 7:46:45 PM
Hi G Jax! I would also welcome Chris Squire's music to these airwaves, and do!
Lizbot (host) 7:47:26 PM
@G Jax - This is a saxophonist/composer from Seoul who a times sounds proggy, at times sounds like fusion
G Jax 7:48:00 PM
Man, I’m still high from last night. You ever go to a show and you’re kinda not looking forward to it. You’re kinda whatever and then you come away and you’re like blown away. That was me last night Herb Alpert. Coolest thing I’ve seen in years 91 years old I believe he’s playing up in the New Brunswick in the next week or so anybody get a chance him out
Lizbot (host) 7:48:47 PM
@G Jax - Wow! He's still going??! Damn. Much Respect to Herb Alpert! He did write a lot of classics!
Roffleaphonic 7:48:49 PM
Fish out of Water! Anything from that is my non-committal request list. Not today however. :)
Lizbot (host) 7:49:20 PM
@G Jax - And yes, that is a familiar feeling! Almost always worth pushing myself through those feelings and going out to a show!
Danosaur🦖 7:50:00 PM
@G Jax - That is amazing! Go Herb!
G Jax 7:51:11 PM
Yeah, I grew up and I always like this stuff and everything but my wife wanted to go and I like the music so there was no issue there but I’m like kinda eh.. but yeah, he’s still going. He is 91 and doesn’t look or act it. And that band he has is just absolutely top notch perfect. Really really fun enjoyable night.
G Jax 7:52:09 PM
I like it so much I bought a T-shirt, which I never ever ever do not since I was like a teenager. Not to mention, I’m a cheap bastard.
Alex from Media 7:54:59 PM
Thanks Lizbot! Great show! Thanks musicians and chat-grimalkins!
Danosaur🦖 7:55:25 PM
Thanks for the music and chat!
Amy Lee 7:56:01 PM
Thanks Lizbot & chat musicians to-be!
Number 6 7:56:05 PM
Thanks for the show, BCNU!
medukha 7:56:26 PM
What a great show & chat! Thanks again Liz! (even though there's one more tune)
G Jax 7:57:08 PM
Yeah, I wish I caught more of the show. Lizbot show is consistently good. My schedule has not allowed me to catch up for quite a while. Need to correct that. Night all
Lizbot (host) 7:57:45 PM

medukha 8:00:26 PM
