With Mike Hunter

Loren Nerell (November 30, 1960 – July 2026) was an American composer and performer known for blending ambient electronic music with influences from Balinese and Javanese gamelan traditions.

Born in Long Beach, California, Nerell developed an early fascination with electronic music after hearing Tangerine Dream's Rubycon. He studied analog synthesis, tape composition, computer synthesis, and microtonal music at several California institutions, including San Diego State University and California State University Dominguez Hills. He later earned a B.S. in Anthropology and Geography from Cal Poly Pomona and an M.A. in Ethnomusicology from UCLA, where his thesis focused on the Balinese ceremonial gamelan style known as lelambatan.

Nerell spent several months in Java and Bali studying traditional gamelan music, an experience that became a defining influence on his compositional voice. His work often fused electronic textures, field recordings, and Indonesian musical elements into immersive soundscapes.

Over his career, he composed music for film, theater, dance, and multimedia projects, recorded numerous solo and collaborative albums, and performed with artists and ensembles including the Kronos Quartet. His collaborations included projects with Steve Roach, Mark Seelig, A Produce, Paul Haslinger, Djam Karet, and L. Subramaniam.

In addition to his creative work, Nerell worked in the music technology field as a sound designer and recording engineer, including a position at Oberheim Electronics, and later served as a recording technician at UCLA's Herb Alpert School of Music.

Overall, Nerell is remembered as a distinctive figure in ambient music whose work bridged electronic synthesis and Southeast Asian musical traditions.
