Part 1 is anecdotal - 2 american friends misadventures trying to get into notoriously exclusive techno club Berghain in former East Berlin. Part 2 is more about the history of the music itself, tracing back to Germans becoming fascinated with certain underground Detroit Techno radio shows

@Roffleaphonic - Ah yes! It seems at this point all my screens are dedicated to music, but especially my home desktop and studio laptop. The home desktop is oooooold and dying and has a huge amount of my MP3s on it, so I am slowly in the process of trying to save everything on there - tricky given it will not connect to "the cloud", and it crashes when hooked up to external drives. It's been a lengthy process!

I get the 1 T byte ones since I fill them up with mostly music.

I would say just buy something stupid big if you can possibly afford that these days. And do the lot!

A while ago I got a used 4 T byte external drive off of discount electronics for $100, works great!

@Number 6 - The problem is my desktop crashes when I hook up external hard drives to it at this point. I also have had too many external drives fail in the past, so I need to put all my digital music in the cloud and have a couple of backups, but it will take an astronomical amount of time and I have only gotten through the songs starting in numbers and part of the A songs

Honestly, i don't know know if you have a day job, which complicates shit all the time.

Pull the drive and put it in another system and copy the drive if it's not encrypted, no problem.

Every time I fill up thumb drives I just by more when I fill them up.

The problem with thumbdrives is you should plug them in from time to time or they will degrade.

Same for most solid-state currently.

@Roffleaphonic - I might just do that (pull the drive). I have so much work and writing and photos on there, but the amount of music on there worries me, some of it no longer available or music I burned from a vinyl to MP3 set-up I had access to a long time ago

@Number 6 - I used to use thumb drives frequently, but they are only good for transferring relatively small amounts of data. These days I use file transfer sites like WeTransfer or Google Drive to transfer relatively small amounts of data I would have previously done with a thumb drive

I think that all of the $$$ going into computers for data centers has driven up the HD prices.

I hear ya Lizbot. It was old before we even hear about it.

And now streaming servers are "sunsetting" previously-purchased-to-own digital movies, tv shows, etc. THat's why you can only really trust physical copies, as much of a pain in the ass as they are to keep and organize. And even then, better keep your players in good shape and your physical media climate controlled! It never ends!

I really thought we had library's for that shit.

Some brands of flash drives suck, like the 5 Below YOUSE ones.

And now thanks to those data centers, Apple and other manufacturers are talking about reducing built-in memory in iphones and computers because it's being sold at such a premium now, thanks to the stupid AI rush to build build build [centers no one but some tech billionaires and their venture capital investors want]

@Number 6, I have so much on my good 256 SD chip in my phone. Makes no sense. But it's all about back up.

I know, and back up multiple times.

I pull from sources to load it, but I never trust it and have everything also on hard drives. I love my HD's.

Even stuff on bandcamp that I paid for has gotten deleted.

@Number 6 - Re: Deleted Bandcamp albums - Yeah, that stinks. That's Reason #500 why I download everything. Sure, eats a lot of memory, but at least I know I have it. Nothing worse than needing a really specific audio file you know you paid for and it's just disappeared into the ether!

Yup, most stuff that I play is brand new or I never played it before, there's just so much music always coming out.

@Number 6 - Same! I'm always playing new music at home and for friends and family who would listen. The station is a way to expand that impulse on grander scale and reach more music lovers. Or as our 75th Anniversary poster said "A haven for the creative impulse!"

Joe Frank was not on sale then for sure.

I also loved the feeling of DJing live events with only vinyl, and the exhilaration of having to drop the needle on the exact right spot with no lag...My back did not so much appreciate hauling crates of vinyl and I threw my back out at one of my old DJ events! I love having vinyl records from my favorite artists that I have back-stories and adventures collecting and remember exactly how and where I found them

At your finger tips means I can request ANYTHING! Scarry...

BUT I can't go off just vinyl anymore, and I digital affords so much more space for more music, which is the most important part of this to me! I just do not and have NEVER trusted streaming services, whether music or video, they merge, they go under, they "sunset" your purchases, they don't last. So for me, I have many shelves of records, but at this point my digital collective far exceeds those

@Roffleaphonic - I still think about the stacks. It's been about 5 years at The Barge, preceded by 1 year of pandemic era broadcast from home, preceded by 18 years of being in the main studio, which moved once during that time between two different on-campus buildings

The last time I was on campus the studio was at the student center.

I suppose that the newer DJs will never see it.:(

I started in 2002 at the original studio which was in the same building since the 1940s in one capacity or another, beginning with the station's founder, H. Grant Theis, broadcasting out of his dorm room! It was in that building's basement when I started, Then the university put us in a new campus building, which everyone broadcast out of until the 2020. I can't remember the exact year we moved there...2005 maybe?

@Ted - Oh nice! That's a show I probably would have checked out, but I was traveling in the Inland Pacific Northwest, visiting relatives in Spokane, WA and cousins who met up with us from Seattle

Todd gave Ringo a shoutout for his 86th(!!) birthday And Ringo was a very sickly child.

How was the Spokane trip? Other than the reason for being there, which is not fun.

@Ted - wow. Ringo does not get a lot of love! Mostly these days I hear people referencing his announcement about no longer accepting fan-mail, punctuated by "Peace and Love'!

@Roffleaphonic - It was good. It was for a somewhat sad reason: My uncle, who has lived there since the early 1960s is in hospice and my mom & I wanted to see him one last time. But it was nice to see my cousins I hadn't seen in ages as well

Seeing kid friends and relatives is a trip all on it own.

@Number 6 - I have a few of those (photos of the old studio) around, mostly from Membership Drives when everyone was keyed up and caffeinated and phone-banking!

@Roffleaphonic - Yeah, it was actually the first I met my two cousins' kids out there. They grew up in Seatlle

@Roffleaphonic - When I was a kid, we did the drive from Seattle to Spokane a couple of times - about 5 hours - and visited Grand Coulee Dam in between, along the Columbia River. Woody Guthrie wrote "Roll On, Columbia, Roll On" on commission for the opening of the Grand Coulee Dam and now it is the official State Song of Washington!

I also took pix of The Barge when we started, for future reference.

My kid was born in Seattle. I would love to hear the cousins take on it in this age. I might get it. lol

Spokane the city itself is very pretty because it has the Spokane River running through it, which has dramatic waterfalls right downtown by the Washington Water Works in Riverfront Park, Site of the 1974 World's Fair, "Expo '74: A Symposium on the Environment"!

Go north of Spokane and the forrests are wonderful.

@Number 6 - Good! I wish I had more photos of all the studios of WPRB's past! I have a few ancient ones of Holder Hall in a box somewhere, along with some of my physical paper playlists we used to have to write out and submit
