Welcome to Monday Jazz!
Marcus Watt 12:15:20 PM
When I was young, the only version of Summertime was by Billy Stewart.
Marcus Watt 12:22:00 PM
If you asked me which artist I've seen perform more than any, as a long time Philadelphia area resident, it's definitely Jamaaladeen.
vildachaya1 12:22:51 PM
The Disney shows were some of the most fun Sun Ra shows - I went to see them at Chestnut Cabaret having no idea they were going to do the Disney tribute - I was beside myself with joy
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:23:28 PM
I first heard "Summertime" on "The Best of Sam Cooke"
vildachaya1 12:24:22 PM
The band marched on and off to Whistle while you work - so fun -
Marcus Watt 12:25:17 PM
I loved the Chestnut Caberet. I saw John Cale there once.
vildachaya1 12:26:07 PM
The actual harmonies written by Gershwin for Summertime are really dark. It is kind of an intense piece to play on piano.
Jeff 12:26:35 PM
Nothing like hearing Sun Ra on the radio while wearing my sun ra shirt today.
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:27:30 PM
Love the old Sun Ra reports!
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:33:29 PM
Wadada Leo Smith here with three harpists, the Emanuel sisters, Irene, Ruth and Carol!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 12:49:36 PM
Hello Dan and listeners!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 12:50:38 PM
I see that Mercer County is under a Flash Flood Warning, as is Philadelphia
Rob from Maryland 🦀 12:52:37 PM
Down here it's cloudy and dry, though we too could get some heavy rain later
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:53:09 PM
Drove through a cloudburst north of the city to get here....
Rob from Maryland 🦀 12:53:49 PM
I am enjoying this peaceful sounding show
Jeff 12:53:50 PM
Dan, have you heard Zoh Amba yet? I just found her yesterday. She's a free jazz saxophonist but also has a singer songwriter record out on Matador. She's really amazing.
Marcus Watt 12:54:30 PM
Nobody responded to my question which artist have you seen more than any other.
TAndy 12:54:49 PM
The first hour was met with a very interesting drive out to KoP. Heck of a gully washer I drove through, stay safe out there if you're driving!
TAndy 12:55:34 PM
@Marcus For me, it would be a tie between Infected Mushroom and Godspeed You. I've seen both groups 3 times
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:55:49 PM
Most times: The Ben Vaughn Combo! We were roommates for a spell...
vildachaya1 12:56:39 PM
@Marcus - that would be the Grateful Dead. You had to go to all 3 nights when they came to town cause one show would suck, one would be meh, and the other would be out of this world. You never new which night they'd hit. It is part of what made them unique -they weren't afraid to suck now and again.
Rob from Maryland 🦀 12:56:40 PM
@Marcus, Scrawl in the 90s and Government Issue in the 80s come to mind
Jeff 12:57:28 PM
I think my most seen artist is Stereolab then Mary Timony/Helium, Sonic Youth, Grateful Dead, Mogwai
Dan Buskirk (host) 12:57:39 PM
Used to date a woman whose ex-boyfriend was in Scrawl. Got to hear lots of "Jeff" stories....
vildachaya1 12:58:14 PM
@dan - The band I've seen the most would be my band but mentioning it here cause CC from Ben Vaughn plays with The Wild Bohemians too.
Jeff 1:02:54 PM
@dan, oops I misgendered Zoh Amba, They are amazing. John Zorn produced their record O, Sun as well.
Rob from Maryland 🦀 1:02:55 PM
Dan, um, wow
Rob from Maryland 🦀 1:03:20 PM
I should throw Fugazi into the mix, too
Marcus Watt 1:03:25 PM
Enjoying the conversation. I only bought it up because I've seen Jamaaladeen about 10 or 12 times
Marcus Watt 1:04:36 PM
Rob, I only saw Fugazi once. At the Troc. Unforgettable.
TAndy 1:06:25 PM
I woulda loved to see Fugazi. Some other bands I need to see but haven't yet.. METZ, The Garden, Alien Nosejob, TAGABOW... Too many lol
TAndy 1:08:35 PM
And Sade if she ever goes back on tour again someday
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:08:55 PM
Used to see the Philly band Nixon's Head regularly in the '90s...
Rob from Maryland 🦀 1:14:12 PM
Marcus, nice! TAndy, yes!
Marcus Watt 1:15:26 PM
I saw Nixon's Head, Electric Love Muffin, and Dead Milkmen at the Troc.
Marcus Watt 1:17:11 PM
I still have the cassette 'You're Soaking in it'.
Jeff 1:27:05 PM
I love Marshall! Saw the Arkestra when he was 99 years old. I want to see him this weekend at Grounds for Sculpture if I can.
Marcus Watt 1:28:07 PM
Nels Cline is great. Saw him with Jamaaladeen about five years ago.
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:28:28 PM
Love that "You're Soaking in It" comp!

Rob M 1:31:23 PM
Marshall Allen has kept the show going every time I've seen him. With Wolf Eyes a few years ago the house lights were up and it reached a point where they just stood and watched him and DM Hotep. When he had his trio with Matthew Shipp recently he was playing while they took a group photo and kept them playing an extra hour.
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:35:08 PM
It's mind-bending.
Jeff 1:40:55 PM
This track is hot
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:42:08 PM
Yeah, great stuff!
Marcus Watt 1:43:38 PM
Pretty sure the first time I saw Jamaaladeen was forty years ago.
Dan Buskirk (host) 1:46:01 PM
Do you remember the context?
Marcus Watt 1:56:26 PM
No. Sorry.
Cameron Farthing 2:15:31 PM
is there a link to that show on saturday?

Cameron Farthing 2:19:09 PM
thank you!!
Marcus Watt 2:21:58 PM
Jamaaladeen is a great man.
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:31:41 PM
Yeah, loved chatting him up!
TAndy 2:32:33 PM
Ooh new Sault!! This is already an ear worm for me in firt listen haha
Dan Buskirk (host) 2:39:54 PM
Yeah, it's a good one!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 2:58:47 PM
Back after things. Dan, I love this dub Boomtown Rats song!
Marcus Watt 3:00:50 PM
Always a pleasure.
TAndy 3:01:58 PM
Thanks for the banger of a show today Dan!
