Hello & Welcome to my Birthday Show! I am glad to be back!! I will be playing a lot of Doubleplusgood favorites from 5-8!
Roffleaphonic 5:01:19 PM
Happy Birthday!
Alex from Media 5:01:46 PM
Happy Birthday! Hope the barge is nice n cool!
Lizbot (host) 5:03:06 PM
Hi Roffleaphonic!
Lizbot (host) 5:03:17 PM
@Roffleaphonic - Why, thank you!
Lizbot (host) 5:03:45 PM
Hi Alex from Media! Thanks!! It's hotter in my house than it is in the studio, so I'm relieved from the heat for the next 3 hours!
Jon Solomon 5:03:52 PM
Happy Birthday Eve Eve.
Lizbot (host) 5:04:13 PM
Hi Jon Solomon! Ha, Thanks!
Roffleaphonic 5:05:00 PM
ICE Station Solomon is sounding good about now. :)
Jon Solomon 5:06:13 PM
I have a seltzer and a radio, I'm all set.
Roffleaphonic 5:07:49 PM
I have like 10 bottles of water in the freezer. No games this week.
Lizbot (host) 5:08:59 PM
@Jon Solomon - Sounds good!
Lizbot (host) 5:10:21 PM
My Birthday Mission on my actual birthday July Fourth: ESCAPE TO NEW JERSEY! To accomplish this, I must brave the traffic from the farthest reaches of Northwest Philadelphia to get to South Jersey for my family's annual picnic - crossing BOTH the World Cup Fanzone in Lemon Hill section of Fairmount Park on a World Cup Game Day, AND Welcome America 250 Ben Franklin Parkway closures to make it to 676!
Lizbot (host) 5:10:56 PM
@Roffleaphonic - I skipped an outdoor concert last night. I cannot! listened to the fireworks from inside my house!
Lizbot (host) 5:13:06 PM
Sadly, the upstairs A/C in my house is broken and it's over 100 upstairs and I have guests coming to stay shortly after my birthday! Eeek! Been blocking all the cooler air into one area
Ted 5:13:11 PM
Sparks have a birthday present for you. They announced a live album “from the moon”. What a couple of goofballs!
addie “5 snakes” plum 🐍 5:13:18 PM
Happy bday Lizbot!!
Lizbot (host) 5:13:37 PM
Hi Ted! Oooh, noice! I had not heard about this!!
Lizbot (host) 5:14:43 PM
Hi addie “5 snakes” plum 🐍! The nickname "Five Snakes McGee" popped into my head when I saw your screenname!
addie “5 snakes” plum 🐍 5:15:46 PM
I always wanted to be like Arthur “two sheds” Jackson
Ted 5:15:52 PM
I just found an 11.5 hour YouTube video collecting all known footage from their 21 night live spectacular!
DebbieWebby 5:15:58 PM
Happy birthday!! 🎂
addie “5 snakes” plum 🐍 5:16:53 PM
Hope everyone is staying as cool as possible. I have not left the house today other than to step onto the porch.
Lizbot (host) 5:17:49 PM
Hi DebbieWebby! Thank you! I hope you're staying cool!
Lizbot (host) 5:18:18 PM
@addie “5 snakes” plum 🐍 - omg, Arthur “two sheds” Jackson is perfect!
Alex from Media 5:18:21 PM
@ 5 snakes Same here. took the day off, went out to water the plants and now it's just me n the ice pops n Lizbot.
iConJohn 5:19:29 PM
Happy birthday week Liz! On my porch with the fan on listening in!
Lizbot (host) 5:20:41 PM
@Ted - Oh damn! Where is that video??! I have some blurry photos from my crappy early digital camera I had at the time, and a photo of me & Ron Mael at Carling Academy Islington. And me & Ayesha Keshani wearing big fake mustaches for Angst in My Pants night!
Lizbot (host) 5:21:30 PM
Hi iConJohn! Thank you! Happy to provide your porch hang soundtrack!
Lizbot (host) 5:22:08 PM
@addie “5 snakes” plum 🐍 - Studio not too bad. Very hot at home! I called HVAC repair right before leaving for Princeton!
addie “5 snakes” plum 🐍 5:22:32 PM
@Alex my kid just made me mashed popsicles with lemonade, like a slushie. It was so refreshing.
Roffleaphonic 5:23:29 PM
I can see the Ben Franklin Bridge from my roof, I ain't goin' nowhere. Last time I went to Penn's landing on the 4th people were throwing cherry bombs onto the crowded walkway. Never again. But a slushie sounds like the right idea addie..
Lizbot (host) 5:24:57 PM
@Alex from Media - I found these watermelon flavor "Johnny Pops" popsicles recently and I love them! That and actual watermelon is my primary go-to!
addie “5 snakes” plum 🐍 5:25:19 PM
If it’s not storming I might try going over to Drexel park to watch the ‘works.
addie “5 snakes” plum 🐍 5:25:53 PM
Mmm I could go for some real watermelon slices right now.
Roffleaphonic 5:26:21 PM
@Lizbot, my A/C is on work order. Currently 96 in my apartment. Crummy timing for a heat wave.
Lizbot (host) 5:26:52 PM
@addie “5 snakes” plum 🐍 - haha, I used to do that! Me & my brother also made soooo much lemon squash, lemonade, lime concoctions, smashed pops, whatever we could find! The worst was the powdered stuff, though, like Country Time or Crystal Light! My mom always bought Crystal Light and I swear to god it's diet because it's designed for you to cough up like 90% of the powder!
Lizbot (host) 5:27:27 PM
@Roffleaphonic - Yeah and THIS Fourth, with the 250th, the World Cup, the HEAT, is gonna be NUTS
iConJohn 5:27:48 PM
That’s a great spot @Addie. Bummed that they don’t start till 10:30pm.
Roffleaphonic 5:29:10 PM
@addie, what is the going market price for a watermelon? I know the melon trays are insane.
Dana K (in exile) 5:30:08 PM
Hi Lizbot! Welcome back and happy early birthday!!
Citizen Caddle 5:30:34 PM
I just came here to say Happy Birthday to Lizbot!!! Thanks for always being awesome!!!
Dana K (in exile) 5:30:49 PM
I love a birthday show. Always full of hits.
Roffleaphonic 5:30:52 PM
@Lizbot, yeah orders of magnitude more craziness in the cards.
Lizbot (host) 5:32:32 PM
Hi Dana K!
Lizbot (host) 5:32:49 PM
Hi Citizen Caddle!
Lizbot (host) 5:33:00 PM
@Citizen Caddle - Thank you!!
addie “5 snakes” plum 🐍 5:33:28 PM
iConJohn I am usually long in bed but in southwest Philly it’s pointless on a holiday to try to go to sleep early.
addie “5 snakes” plum 🐍 5:33:50 PM
@Roffle I actually have no idea!
Dana K (in exile) 5:34:18 PM
I'm about to head over to Johnny Brenda's for a punk show but what I really want to do is go to Fred's for water ice.
Lizbot (host) 5:34:40 PM
@Dana K - I was torn because I really wanted to do my birthday show, but I also want to do a Midwest bands show (or maybe songs about the Midwest) in honor of my midwest roadtrip, but maybe in two weeks! I DO have Ohio natives DEVO coming up tonight, and maybe The Mice!
Lizbot (host) 5:35:10 PM
@Dana K - Mmm, Fred's. I'm glad my brother-in-law moved super close to that place! Have fun!
Dana K (in exile) 5:35:14 PM
The Mice! You gotta play Not Proud of the USA! It's our national anthem.
Lizbot (host) 5:36:36 PM
@Dana K - You KNOW it! And guess what, like a total teen brat punk, I roll my window down when driving through my hometown main drag on the Fourth of July on the way to my family's picnic blaring that song!
Lizbot (host) 5:37:50 PM
@addie “5 snakes” plum 🐍 - Fireworks were already going strong last night!
Lizbot (host) 5:38:34 PM
@Roffleaphonic - Oh no! I'm sorry your A/C is broken too! I feel so bad because I host a band every summer who sleep upstairs and there are a LOT of them and it's hot AF up there right now!
Ted 5:41:37 PM
Lots of Sparks content on the Zaph1000 channel including the 21 night compilation. (Also tons of Nine Inch Nails)
Lizbot (host) 5:42:10 PM
@Ted - oooh, good to know. (I'll leave the NIN for George...)
Lizbot (host) 5:43:28 PM
@Ted - I reeeeally need to save a LOT of data from my dying old desktop Mac that is stubbornly no longer letting me back it up or hook it to an eternal drive. it is VERY much not on "the cloud". It's super old and so many 2000s photos are trapped on it!
addie “5 snakes” plum 🐍 5:45:02 PM
@lizbot I haven’t been able to hear any over the AC unit in my window!!
Dana K (in exile) 5:45:16 PM
More Orange Juice!
Lizbot (host) 5:46:20 PM
@Ted - I have a lot of great show photos on there, and me with Ron Mael, plus old Glenn Branca photos from various cities and performances, including when we stuck into the Harry Partch instrument room in Montclair in the mid-2000s! Everyone was asking for those when I was at the Branca tribute last month. That computer is on its last legs, so it's so hard to extract stuff from it! No file transfer site works! No Google Driver
Lizbot (host) 5:46:50 PM
@Dana K - This is one of my all-time happiest albums ever and I will never not smile when I hear it!
Lizbot (host) 5:47:23 PM
@addie “5 snakes” plum 🐍 - Oh no! Headphones???
iConJohn 5:48:57 PM
@Liz @Dana How is it that I know very little about Orange Juice, given that I was very into WKDU in 1982.
Lizbot (host) 5:49:33 PM
@Dana K - I have a soft-spot for Scottish sophisti-pop and Edwyn Collins' voice!
Dana K (in exile) 5:49:58 PM
I think I have that same soft spot.
Lizbot (host) 5:50:52 PM
@iConJohn - Orange Juice is so great! And 1982 is one of those years when a TON of my favorite albums were released! 1978 and 1982. And those are significant years to me for other reasons too! I'm a 1978 baby and someone I love is a 1982
iConJohn 5:51:12 PM
Well I was big into Altered Images back then.
michael gudgeon 5:52:20 PM
yeeeeeeeeee!
Lizbot (host) 5:52:20 PM
@iConJohn - I assume you saw the film "Gregory's Girl" with Clare Grogan??
Lizbot (host) 5:53:00 PM
@Dana K - haha, one doesn't study in Scotland and not become afflicted with a strong case Scottish indie pop love!
Lizbot (host) 5:53:05 PM
Hi michael gudgeon!
Lizbot (host) 5:54:31 PM
Now if ONLY I could meet Lawrence from Felt!! Lawrence of Belgravia. Lawrence the Mystery Man!
Dana K (in exile) 5:55:05 PM
I wish I could make it back over for Glas-Goes-Pop! The Orchids and the Clientele and the Bats are all playing this year.
Lizbot (host) 5:55:52 PM
Someone who frequents sites like Tee Public should make an Admiral Akbar /Felt mash-up shirt with "The Spanish House: It's a Trap!"
iConJohn 5:55:55 PM
I did watch Gregory’s Girl to see Clair I think her name is. She was only in like one scene if I remember correctly. Miss those years of renting obscure VHS movies at TLA.
Lizbot (host) 5:56:28 PM
@Dana K (in exile) - Oh god, I know! I have been drooling over that line-up! dammit!
Lizbot (host) 5:57:46 PM
@Dana K (in exile) - One of the hottest (in temperature) shows I ever saw was The Clientele at 4040 Locust during a horrible heatwave with no A/C and poor Alasdair looked like he was about to pass out on stage!
George Korein 5:58:44 PM

Howdy Lizbot and friends
Ted 6:04:06 PM
I have a guy in Schuylkill county PA that works wonders with dodgy hard drives etc. I’m sure there are people in the big city who do similar work. My advice is to hurry up!
Lizbot (host) 6:05:41 PM
Thanks, George Korein!!
Lizbot (host) 6:06:02 PM
Hi Pengy! Sounds like a nice cozy and cool spot!!
Ted 6:06:43 PM
I know my onion only because of Montreal covered it.
Van Kapeghian 6:06:45 PM
Oh hey George Korein, I joined your recent listening party - really dug the tunes
Lizbot (host) 6:07:15 PM
Hi Van Kapeghian! How goes it? I hope you're staying cool in South Jersey!
Lizbot (host) 6:08:27 PM
@Ted - Oh yeah, did you see the of Montreal Underground Arts show last week?? I was in Ohio so had to miss it, sadly!
Lizbot (host) 6:09:20 PM
@Van Kapeghian - I was driving to The Mann during that listening party, but I heard you showed up!
Van Kapeghian 6:09:23 PM
It is a toasty one. Constant disagreements with my dogs that love to spend all day outside
Van Kapeghian 6:11:11 PM

George, I am SO excited for that show!
George Korein 6:15:24 PM

@Laura Loewen - Thank you so much! Happy to have you here and glad you're listening in! We gotta do what we can to make some joy and deal with the heat and this crazy world! Don't know what I'd do without music!
Lizbot (host) 6:50:12 PM
@Eso! - Thanks!! Glad you're staying cool! Poor George is home with the HVAC repair guy to [hopefully] fix our broken A/C! The studio by comparison is downright chilly!
Lizbot (host) 6:51:01 PM
@Richard of Rocky Hill - Thank you for yr birthday wishes! haha, yeah, I saw the George M Cohan "Yankee Doodle" movie maaaaany times as a kid. My mom put it on every birthday!

Dale Hazelton 7:03:40 PM
afternoon. hope you're keeping cool.
Ted 7:04:18 PM
I confess Kevin Barnes lost me over a decade ago. I saw them back in their prime though. In the yard of a brewery in MD.
Lizbot (host) 7:05:18 PM
@Alex from Media - Rats! But there's plenty more to go!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:05:25 PM
Happy Birthday Lizbot!!
Lizbot (host) 7:05:44 PM
Hi Dale Hazelton! It's pretty cool in studio today! Not so much at my house! Might have to sleep here!
Dale Hazelton 7:06:58 PM
not a bad idea if there's a couch. and it's clean.
Lizbot (host) 7:07:33 PM
@Ted - Yeah I haven't gone to any of Montreal shows in quite a long time, over a decade. They're one of those bands that keeps touring and I make note of when they're coming, but I haven't bit the bullet and gone back to see them. Not as into their recent albums. I loved them in the early 2000s. I saw them at North Star Bar with Peelander-Z! Poor Peelander-Z had a horrible touring van accident recently!
Lizbot (host) 7:08:01 PM
@Dale Hazelton - The old studio had a dank old sofa that looked like ground beef. This one has none. Just as well!
Lizbot (host) 7:08:15 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀- Thank you!!!
TAndy 7:10:00 PM
Hey, happy birthday Lizbot! And welcome back too 😁
Lizbot (host) 7:11:33 PM
Hi TAndy! Thank you!! The Midwest road-trip was a success! Lots of Ohio cities visited! Lots of weird Midwest foods tried!
Dale Hazelton 7:14:34 PM
i like gas stations in ohio. they sell booze and ammunition and cb radios, too.
Richard of Rocky Hill 7:15:05 PM
Thanks so much for playing that Jonathan Richman recording. I'm a causal but admiring fan and hadn't heard it before ... "The little puppy is now a dog /The little piglet is now a hog"-- classic Richmond! ... I wouldn't have know his music & lyrics if it wasn't for 'PRB and Doubleplusgood
Lizbot (host) 7:15:55 PM
@Dale Hazelton - Lotsa big truck stops in Ohio and truckers-oriented gas stations. And melting chocolate pb "buckeyes" in saran wrap
Lizbot (host) 7:17:02 PM
@Richard of Rocky Hill - I'm so glad to have spread Jonathan Richman's music around and that it reached you! I love him so much. Catch him live some time if you get the chance. He dances on stage and is so endearing
TAndy 7:17:26 PM
Honestly as I'm getting older, a simple road trip through the Midwest to check out all the locales and different rest stops sounds like the most perfect getaway
TAndy 7:17:50 PM
Or turning it into a cannonball run hah
Lizbot (host) 7:18:05 PM
@TAndy - Yeah, It was a nice simple getaway to cities I'd never checked out before!
TAndy 7:19:49 PM
Did you take at least ONE obligatory off track detour to see the world's biggest [object]? It's such a cliche that I wonder if some places still do that
Ted 7:21:50 PM
That’s terrible about Peelander-Z. I am unfamiliar but will check them out tonight. It’s like Oliver Tree - I never heard of him until he died but I find him fascinating. This is not a good way to discover music!
Lizbot (host) 7:24:44 PM
@TAndy - haha, my mom was always doing that on our family roadtrips! I proudly own a spud-shaped pin from the Idaho Potato Museum for that reason! This trip, not much of that, but we did get to the James Thurber House in Columbus, OH!
Lizbot (host) 7:25:59 PM
@Ted - Yeah, horrible accident. Multiple members badly injured.
TAndy 7:33:04 PM
Any stops at Quiktrip? I've heard they're comparable to the Sheetz and Wawas of Here 🙏
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:35:56 PM
More Fall!
Lizbot (host) 7:36:04 PM
@TAndy - Yes! But I saw a Sheetz and I drove RIGHT ON PAST IT. Not messing with Sheetz as a Wawa girl!
Lizbot (host) 7:36:20 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - Queue John Peel...
Lizbot (host) 7:37:00 PM
Oh! Brother is a song I used to play a lot in live club DJ sets 25/30 years ago! Dancy Fall!
Alex from Media 7:37:15 PM
Feeling cold comfort knowing that at 7:36 pm the temp has dropped below 100F
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:40:14 PM
My house is kimono-ed
Lizbot (host) 7:40:37 PM
@Alex from Media - Yikes! I am in a virtually [we have blackout curtains to keep heat out] windowless studio, ignoring the heat apocalypse I'm about to walk back out into in about 20 minutes!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:41:02 PM
@Alex, don't freeze!
TAndy 7:41:24 PM
Sheetz is life changing I can promise that!
Lizbot (host) 7:41:32 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - Ha! Sounds like something artist couple Christo & Jeanne-Claude would do - SLid a giant kimono on their house!
Lizbot (host) 7:42:30 PM
@TAndy - I am fiercely regionally loyal to Wawa! Never Sheetz! They have a "z" on the end! How can I take that seriously?! What are they, 1-877-Karz-4-Kidz?! Never!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:42:40 PM
My neighborhood heat indexes are still above 100. I haven't opened our curtains all day. The AC is set to 84 degrees so as not to overtax it. And I'm wearing the thinnest clothes I have
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:44:22 PM
@Lizbot, the only Sparks album I have is Kimono My House, which I bought because it has This House Ain't Big Enough, which was a big hit when I was able to pick up Radio Luxembourg in Italy after dark in 1974
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:45:03 PM
Great to hear this T Heads song too!
Roffleaphonic 7:46:33 PM
@TAndy, Circle K and those Kum n' Go. But the Buc-ee's rules them all. :)
Alex from Media 7:46:59 PM
@ Roffle "Kum n go"? you jest
Roffleaphonic 7:47:58 PM
Mid-west stuff Alex. lol
Alex from Media 7:48:10 PM
Might be a different sort of place in NYC.
Roffleaphonic 7:48:32 PM
For sure
Lizbot (host) 7:48:55 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - Glad you enjoyed it. This Town Ain't Big Enough was their early hit, for sure. Lots of play on various European shows. Of course I think you should get more Sparks albums! I recommend next getting Propaganda, Indiscreet, A Woofer in Tweeter's Clothing, Angst In my Pants, Whomp That Sucker, Hello Young Lovers, Exotic Creatures of the Deep, and The Girl Is Crying in Her Latte! START with those! I swear I'm being picky!
Lizbot (host) 7:49:19 PM
@Roffleaphonic - Definitely encountered a few Buc-ee's
Ted 7:50:28 PM
Family Fodder! Been a while since I heard them.
Lizbot (host) 7:50:46 PM
@Ted - They're great!
Ted 7:52:23 PM
That weird lady in the Film Music video! Apparently it’s stock footage and nobody knows who she is.
TAndy 7:52:59 PM
Thanks for the show Lizbot! Have a great holiday weekend, and happy Hoagiefest!
Alex from Media 7:53:53 PM
Thanks Lizbot! Enjoy the weekend and stay cool!
Roffleaphonic 7:53:53 PM
That was one hot show Lizbot! I hope your AC is back in working order when you get home. HVAC magic perhaps. :)
Lizbot (host) 7:53:56 PM
Thanks, TAndy! A Fine HoagieFest to you as well on this sweltering evening!
Lizbot (host) 7:54:11 PM
Thanks Alex from Media! Stay cool!
Lizbot (host) 7:54:24 PM
Thanks Roffleaphonic! Yeah, I will find out when I get home!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:56:57 PM
I enjoyed what I was able to catch of your show tonight, Lizbot. Ty, happy birthday, happy fourth, good luck getting across Philadelphia to south Jersey
Lizbot (host) 7:57:12 PM
THANK YOU everyone for all the birthday wishes! Stay cool and enjoy your weekend! I MIGHT Not be here next week - There is a family member in Spokane, WA who is in hospice, and I might be there depending on how things unfold. I have to escort my octagenarian mom there (it's her brother, my uncle)
Richard of Rocky Hill 7:58:02 PM
Be safe everyone. Remember: In this kind of heat drink _before_ you're thirsty! (Once you're thirsty, you're already behind.) And thanks, Lizbot, for allowing us revel in your endless fountains of wondrous sounds ... HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you ~ and the USA, too! :-))
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:58:15 PM
@Lizbot, thanks for the recommendations. I do know that Propaganda was the next album after Kimono, I've always loved the cover but never have (yet) acquired
Lizbot (host) 7:58:36 PM
@Richard of Rocky Hill - Thank you! I have quite a lot of water with me just in case! Thank you for tuning in! Always good to hear from you!
Lizbot (host) 7:59:24 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - I love Propaganda! I would get that one next if I were you! Also love the kidnapped Mael Brothers cover photo!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 7:59:50 PM
@Lizbot, I like this last song you're playing!
Rob from Maryland 🦀 8:00:23 PM
and good luck with your air conditioning!
Lizbot (host) 8:00:24 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - Glad you're enjoying it! I will be playing it on the Fourth as well!
Lizbot (host) 8:00:52 PM
@Rob from Maryland 🦀 - Thank you! Yeah, that A/C I fear might need to be replaced entirely. It has been failing a lot lately. ARGH!
Lizbot (host) 8:02:20 PM
See you all here in two weeks I hope! Stay safe and stay cool!
