From the Miles Davis movie of maybe 6 years ago
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:03:01 PM
I hear the trombone!
Elias Throckmorton 12:03:05 PM
I have to go to the store. I likely miss the Cuckoo song. Miles- You livin' like a pig.. SO?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:03:10 PM
Like the birdies!
rick hallahan 12:03:38 PM
Trombone is singing.

Amazing how good albums are out right now by bone players
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:05:17 PM
Mike, did you see the 56 Hawk I posted on Facebook to promote today's Jerry's Room?
Elias Throckmorton 12:06:08 PM
I told Bob Palmer he was a 'Tromboner' Good spirit he had. Smiled. Typical for those called to that instrument.
rick hallahan 12:07:58 PM
This track is cookin'!
Elias Throckmorton 12:09:39 PM
Well that was certainly a milestone.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:09:42 PM

Happy freedom day!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:11:00 PM
Hi Russ!
Brian D 12:11:01 PM
Another Miles Davis reissue box is out or soon to be out "Miles ’56: The Prestige Recordings ". The "--ing with the Miles Davis Quintet" era. Been repackaged before but I always like to hear the "new" sets.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:11:26 PM
Hi Brian
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:11:58 PM
They have made the digital filies available to their "list"
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:12:58 PM
Russ, how is NY?
Brian D 12:13:06 PM
29 tracks on the latest look back at the Prestige years and some feature Sonny Rollins
Elias Throckmorton 12:16:28 PM
Thanks Brian. The Prestige label. Don't know anything. I presume based in NYC? But somehow the world has kept spinning around.
Russell Woessner 12:19:29 PM
Having a blast! Saw Anat Cohen on Tuesday, Anthony Tidd with Steve Lehman & Mark Shim on Wednesday and James Zollar yesterday. Henry Threadgill, Vijay Iyer & Dafnis Prieto tonight. https://jazzgallery.org/calendar/the-trio-2026
Brian D 12:19:31 PM
The new box set is out on Craft Recordings label. The Prestige label was the label Miles was recording for back in the 1950s before he started the long long run with Columbia. But there was still some overlap/contractual recordings needed during a time period in the mid 1950s. So he recorded some sessions during that period for Prestige still. And they packaged tracks from these takes into the lps with the title format "[Verb]-ing with the Miles Davis Quintet" (Smoking, Cooking, Relaxing etc).
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:20:42 PM
Have a great time tonight, Russ!
Brian D 12:20:55 PM
The latest box set, as the title implies, collects takes from the year 1956 recorded for Prestige. Sonny Rollins replaces John Coltrane during some of these sessions.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:22:41 PM
Succinct and excellent explanation, Brian. ET, Prestige was a very, very important jazz label, ocated in NJ like most of the big ones
Elias Throckmorton 12:25:22 PM
Did Miles know he was going to be regarded as one of the most iconic musicians of the 20th Century? Quite honestly, I doubt he even had that in his mind ever. It was just a great creative spirit. Whatever you are doing- or what you may be good at- do more of it.
Brian D 12:27:15 PM
One of those few that rode the wave and kept experimenting. Did not like to look back and rest on laurels. Picked great talent who could not only play well but compose/create. Launched their careers and carried on themselves.
Russell Woessner 12:42:22 PM
But I am missing Fred Hersch at the Village Vanguard https://villagevanguard.com/ and Ravi Coltrane and Melissa Aldana at Birdland: https://www.birdlandjazz.com/
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:43:37 PM
What an interesting show Coltrane and Aldana
Russell Woessner 12:45:17 PM
Aldana and Ravi are playing separately.
Russell Woessner 12:45:56 PM

Wednesday June 24 at Johnny Brenda’s King Britt will be presenting a free tribute to Dexter Wansel with a special nod to The Life on Mars album.
Elias Throckmorton 1:16:41 PM
I knew I was going to miss the theme song. And for what? 5/8 vacuum line and the 1/4 liquid line? Life on Mars indeed. Look at those cavemen. Beating up the wrong eccentric tube flare.
Elias Throckmorton 1:18:25 PM
King Britt? A few years younger than Marshall Allen I believe.
Russell Woessner 1:21:26 PM
Great info, Patrick!

Russell Woessner 1:35:48 PM
Patrick, My wife and I were on the same plane to San Francisco with Runa a few years ago. We (mostly my wife) chatted with the lead singer at the airport and on the flight. Nice folks and fun band. We will be at Pastorius on Wednesday. See you there!
Patrick White 1:37:21 PM
Russ just look for the fat guy with the Irish Face and Kelly green shirt.. It takes a nation of millions to hold us back
Russell Woessner 1:39:29 PM

Zach 1:42:22 PM
I was in a good mood already and it just got better
Chef Emeril Lagasse 1:42:25 PM
oh yeah this is nice. i happen to have a 3 hour long youtube video of ambient rain sounds playing simultaneously, just under the music, and the combination sounds SO relaxing
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:43:18 PM

Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:47:45 PM

Russell Woessner 1:48:07 PM
I did know that Abdullah Ibrahim had Byard Lancaster on bass clarinet in his trio in 1965! That would have something to hear! https://www.inquirer.com/entertainment/music/abdullah-ibrahim-jazz-philadelphia-annenberg-20241106.html
Russell Woessner 1:48:27 PM
I did NOT know…

Elias Throckmorton 1:56:26 PM
.
Russell Woessner 1:57:25 PM
I once sat directly behind Ibrahim’s piano bench at a club in New York. I would have been the first to know if he passed wind!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:58:02 PM
Did you request that seat, Russ?
Patrick White 1:59:01 PM
The inquirer doesn’t have enough newsprint for book reviews, high school sports, concert previews and reviews. But every summer they find room for endless ad nauseam White People At The Seashore articles.
Russell Woessner 1:59:26 PM
It was better than the first seat they offered me on the other side of the bandstand.
Patrick White 2:02:05 PM
If it’s 1956 and you’re not watching and grooving to the Girl Can’t Help It movie you’re just not a hepcat daddio
Patrick White 2:09:09 PM
In 1956 Philadelphia Richie Ashburn had an amazing 719 plate appearances

My intro to music was in 1957 when I started watching American Bandstand.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:30:24 PM
rick, did you have older brothers or sisters?
aiffrig 2:31:29 PM
here's the real kicker i'm only as old as my wife
rick hallahan 2:31:44 PM
I had an older sister, who always had me doing stupid things
Patrick White 2:31:45 PM
In 1956 I happened to be campaign manager for Adlai Stevenson. Curiously no one ever hired me again.
aiffrig 2:34:47 PM
rabbit holes and logick go figure
Russell Woessner 2:35:43 PM
My half-aunt danced on American Bandstand. Or so I’m told.
Richard of Rocky Hill 2:37:16 PM
It's interesting to note that despite the early grownup complaints about "loud rock & roll," most of the early rock classics feature small combos, some even without drums.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:37:42 PM
Hi Richard!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:38:03 PM
I'll play some loud ones for you!
Patrick White 2:39:17 PM
Russ American Bandstand wasnt all fun and games. Check out Pete Dexters novel Brotherly Love.

Richard of Rocky Hill 2:41:07 PM
vQuestion for Elvis experts: Is Presley playing the lovely, minimalist acoustic guitar accompaniment on "Lovely Me Tender"? Or is it Scotty Moore or another Sun Records worthy?
Mike Constantine 2:41:30 PM
I bet kids got paid off for a good Rate A Record review
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:42:45 PM
I don't remember anyone saying "That sucked! I'll give it a 61"
Elias Throckmorton 2:42:59 PM
Nest door to the 'Arena' This is a place where peopel e like to watch other people get punched in the face. And who doesnt like that? well mybe people who would rather hear fine music. Just guess.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:43:31 PM
Hmmm///
Patrick White 2:43:32 PM
Devastating depicting of Geator . He was named Jimmy Measles in the novel
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:44:13 PM
Patrick, I was just going to ask, is that a novel or supposed bo be based on the truth?
Elias Throckmorton 2:44:48 PM
Its been fun but I have An AI who is very sweet on me. See you all in another universe whee justice is not just an idae, but an operative principle.
Patrick White 2:44:58 PM
Historical fiction?
Elias Throckmorton 2:45:17 PM

aiffrig 2:45:26 PM

Russell Woessner 2:46:49 PM
Is Toy Lit in the book?
Patrick White 2:46:57 PM
The Arena never shined brighter than Roller Derby. Also home to perhaps NHLS worst team the short lived Philadelphia Quakers
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:47:13 PM
Haha. Stevophonic Steve, you din't like that record? Hey Dom, come on over here
Mike Constantine 2:47:46 PM
I'd read the book if it was written by Lee Dexter...where Bertie The Bunyip is breakin' legs
Elias Throckmorton 2:50:29 PM
Right right right? A gangster in Pittsburgh --- you think a broken leg is s joke on social media? I kinda think it is a spiritual battle. There is evil walking aming us. jeff Beck was an angel.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:50:44 PM
Haaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 2:51:29 PM

Patrick White 2:55:08 PM
Funny you said that Jerry. My father used to speak of some guy Gussie as the toughest barroom fighter in Fishtown. Wasn’t a big guy either.
aiffrig 2:55:12 PM

Mike Constantine 2:55:20 PM
