Hey Rick, backatcha. Thank you!
Elias Throckmorton 12:09:30 PM
Funny. I thought that was you playing Sonic Youts. As I searched for the log-in, I was wow, I did not know Miles played with Sonic youth.
Russell Woessner 12:09:50 PM
Miles of Miles!

Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:12:20 PM
Hi Jimboooo, thanks. I hope you enjoy today's show.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:13:25 PM
These Bill Laswell "reconstructions" of Miles' music should not be underestimated. They are brilliant, enhances!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:14:19 PM
Rick, Cooper DeJean is being moved to starting Safety.
jimbooooo 12:14:26 PM
Also, Happy 112th Arrival Day to Sun Ra!
Elias Throckmorton 12:14:50 PM
Oddly reminds me of 'The Man With The Horn'? The spintron says we are still istening to 'Panthalassa? Spock!
rick hallahan 12:15:41 PM
Jerry, wow! Maybe he'll be the next B Dawk!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:16:10 PM
Yes, this is a medley on Panthalassa, ET
Bike R 12:16:48 PM
Noone like Miles! What a great piece
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:17:48 PM
Bike R, Right On!
Dan R 12:18:26 PM
I always forget how absolutely killer the drumming is on this. There's something about the way the high hat plays with the snare
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:19:32 PM
Love your comment, Dan!
Bike R 12:20:04 PM
Part of Miles' brilliance was getting the best out of musicians. It's so amazing!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:23:05 PM
Bike R, beautifully stated.
Dan R 12:23:48 PM
It reminds me about The Heat Warps, a blog that documents every live recording from prime electric era Miles, roughly the same period covered by these Laswell mixes. Some of the recordings are dodgy, but it's really incredible all around. It makes you understand why folks became tape traders. https://theheatwarps.com/
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:25:04 PM
Thank you for that information, Dan! Appreciated!
Elias Throckmorton 12:27:16 PM
Cool Dan. Of course I can't go there now. For the uninitiated, what year did Miles Go Electric? I got Miles and Dylan walking past each other on 57th street. In !967. Miles was playing uptown, Dylan downtown.
Dan R 12:33:01 PM
It's a fuzzy line. For live stuff, it's probably in 1970 when he reconstituted the band after the so-called "lost quintet" split up. I'd say the studio side stuff starts with "In a Silent Way." It's basically the moment when he started incorporating the sounds from Jimi Hendrix, Sly Stone, etc, into his musical vocabulary.
Dan R 12:34:28 PM
But the couple albums before In a Silent Way see him starting to push the line with electronics, having Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea start playing electric keyboards of various sorts, and moving from traditional jazz time to rock and funk beats
Dennis Denard 12:34:43 PM
Two people out of this universe: Miles & Jerry. What a way to spend a Friday afternoon!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:35:16 PM
Thank you, Dennis. Glad to spend it with you!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:36:08 PM
Dan R, what a well thought out answer, incredible.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:37:11 PM
Dennis, are you wearing a Space Suit?
Elias Throckmorton 12:41:21 PM
Neon signs buzzed above pawn shops and jazz clubs, and taxis honked like impatient brass sections.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:41:52 PM
Love that! We have a beatnik in the house!
Elias Throckmorton 12:42:38 PM
Eddie Jefferson? WTF?
rick hallahan 12:42:41 PM
Eddie Jefferson rules!
Dennis Denard 12:48:22 PM
No suit, just spaced out.....
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:50:18 PM
You have prepared well for this journey, DD...
Elias Throckmorton 12:50:36 PM
Indeed. We shall respect the Eddie Jefferson rules. 1) Have Perfect Pitch. 2) Have a back up catcher. But for now- J.T. Realmuto
Elias Throckmorton 12:53:21 PM
backup is Rafael Marchan ? I didn't know we were doing Dub Jerry?
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:53:40 PM
Of dourse!
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:53:55 PM
course
Dennis Denard 12:55:31 PM
Miles stands on the Genius platform with Beethoven
Mike Constantine 12:55:57 PM
There's that theme song
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:56:22 PM
Ha, Hi Mike! You only hit homers
Mike Constantine 12:56:37 PM
Hey Jerry
Elias Throckmorton 12:57:08 PM
Cuckoo song. Why do you love that so much? It is a great song. It is major key- i will answer here. We believe in the human spirit.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 12:57:54 PM
and especially the animal spirit
Elias Throckmorton 12:58:21 PM
You Animal. Kiss Me!

Hi Rick
Rob from Maryland 🦀 1:07:05 PM
Good afternoon, Jerry and everyone. I've heard some Yellow-billed Cuckoos singing in the past week
Brian D 1:11:02 PM
Sounds great Jerry. Hard to choose between listening to Sun Ra or Miles today. Good problem to have.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:11:09 PM
I've been watching videos on YouTube lately of a Tennesee Rancher who takes his favorite bull for rides in his truck. That's what the bull loves to do. They even go to McDonalds.
Elias Throckmorton 1:12:12 PM
Hi Rob. I saw some fledge's today. Also picked a few turtles. Also- and this was unexpected- we saw 'Catfish Jumping'
Mike Constantine 1:12:13 PM
Do the bull go to McDonalds to see his relatives?
Mike Constantine 1:12:23 PM
Does
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:13:12 PM
Hi Rob, love them Cuckoos! I wish you knew Will Constantine Jr, past WPRB jazz host who spends two weeks a year exclusively birding. You two would have plenty to talllk about.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:14:36 PM
Hi Brian, thank you very much. Yes, good dilemma to have. Glad you are enjoying
aiffrig 1:14:53 PM

Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:16:20 PM
Nice, Rick!!
Elias Throckmorton 1:18:39 PM
There is a name for it. You like eating meat. but to go out in the forest and hunt and kill it? I can sing in a minor key.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:19:42 PM
Aiffrig, Mike, Elias... The bull usually prefers chicken places.
aiffrig 1:19:50 PM
archery is the hardest
Elias Throckmorton 1:21:55 PM

Mike Constantine 1:23:32 PM
Now I want Popeye's chicken
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:24:07 PM
The Bull won't fit into your hot rod
rick hallahan 1:24:45 PM
When I was in college, I needed a gut course that I could "ace". So I took Intro to Jazz. The homework was going to the listening lab weekly. That's where I heard the classic Miles LPs like "Cookin'" and "Steamin" regularly. It makes me want to go back to college. Well, maybe not.
Rob from Maryland 🦀 1:25:32 PM
Hi Elias, nice on the fledglings and the turtles. Is 'Catfish Jumping' a movie? band? something else?
Mike Constantine 1:25:51 PM
I first heard Miles in college...it was Live Evil
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:26:22 PM
You deserve it, Rick. Full Scholarship and research grant.
Rob from Maryland 🦀 1:26:27 PM
Jerry, it would be fun to meet Will Constantine Jr
Brian D 1:26:48 PM
Surrey you can't be serious about the fringe on top doctor? I am. And stop calling me Surrey.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:27:47 PM
Rob, I hope that happens, he is a devoted birder like yourself. I hope we can make it happen.
Serenade to a Cuckoo w/Jerry Gordon (host) 1:28:18 PM

Elias Throckmorton 1:28:41 PM
@Rob- quite amazing. i thought it was an inner tube caught beneath the dam. Perkiomen creek. Dam just above the confluence to the Schuylkill river. Catfish Jumping.
Brian D 1:29:19 PM
Surrey with the Fringe on Top. Jitney with the seaweed on top. Dinky with the [you Princetonites fill in the blank] on top.
Brian D 1:31:15 PM
Good memories of walking down the old rail trail to the Perkiomen Creek swimming hole while enjoying the long multi day weekend vacation at the Philly Folk Fest back in the 1990s to early 2000s. Trip was always lighter on the way back ... less beverage weight, just empties.
Elias Throckmorton 1:32:56 PM
you stole my lighter. I always knew it was you.
Brian D 1:34:29 PM
Did it have a metal lighter cover that was five fingered from the I-95 Marketplace (RIP) at Rock n Roll Plus? That wasn't me then.
aiffrig 1:35:45 PM
folk festival luved it add another half-hour on the commute rt-29

Rob from Maryland 🦀 2:00:57 PM
@Jerry, is Will related to Mike? Does his two weeks of birding involve Cape May?
Dennis Denard 2:02:15 PM
As a warm-up to the Newport Jazz Festival, maybe an hour of music by some of the artists appearing there?
