Rob from MaryTweeland 🦀 7:38:08 AM
@MJ, is there any twee this morning? I.e. can I go for a walk?
MJ (host) 7:47:41 AM
Only a song or two... be free! be twee
Rob from MaryTweeland 🦀 7:52:22 AM
Thanks for being so understanding, MJ
MJ (host) 7:55:17 AM
Of course. I try to be an ethical DJ whenever possible
Rob from MaryTweeland 🦀 8:18:46 AM
You areee
Rob from MaryTweeland 🦀 8:19:11 AM
I'm still here, I made the mistake on checking what birds have been sighted nearby this morning
dan Cochrane 8:29:33 AM
Good morning, love their single title, “Silver Jews and Nico”. Something Camper Van Beethoven might come up with.
dan Cochrane 8:34:02 AM
Shocking this is from ‘66, to me anyway.
dan Cochrane 8:36:31 AM
Oops, my bad.
MJ (host) 8:40:49 AM
Morning, Dan! No, that's my bad – I was too slow to update the playlist
MJ (host) 8:41:39 AM
Red House Painters would absolutely be shocking for '66
dan Cochrane 8:42:34 AM
Elgar, seemingly the one composer ELP never covered.
MJ (host) 8:46:38 AM
That too is shocking (given England)
dan Cochrane 8:47:40 AM
Two years after this recording I attended CSO’s free memorial concert for Sir George, wonderful and well deserved of course.
MJ (host) 8:52:07 AM
That's such a treat – Sir George, Chicago legend.
dan Cochrane 8:54:37 AM
Solti to Mahler seems Barenboim to Beethoven, Mozart. As far as legendary recordings.
MJ (host) 8:59:50 AM
That sounds right. His ability to draw out those intense, smooth, dramatic dynamic shifts that you'd need for the late Romantics...
dan Cochrane 9:01:19 AM
Indeed! I was fortunate to have a Thurs. sub. ticket to witness both conducting.
dan Cochrane 9:13:54 AM
Can’t top blues on vinyl, no way.
dan Cochrane 9:16:37 AM
I can smell the jumbo wings, burnt ends BBQ at Cozy Corner, Memphis. Best in town.
dan Cochrane 9:22:27 AM
Well… “Police and high sheriff” by Oliss Martin
MJ (host) 9:22:33 AM
I need to be playing and listening to SO much more blues
dan Cochrane 9:22:57 AM
I hear ya, no pun…
dan Cochrane 9:25:31 AM
I have photographed a mere fraction of all the ever-changing incredible painted murals, most with musical themes obviously, in Memphis. I’m due to return there.
MJ (host) 9:29:12 AM
Need to get down there soon, and Cozy Corner will be on the itinerary. Haven't been to Memphis since I was a boy
dan Cochrane 9:30:51 AM
Also home of legendary photographer, musician William Eggleston. A real character, hero of mine.
dan Cochrane 9:31:37 AM
He shot a Big Star LP cover. The red one.
jim haku 👏 9:36:06 AM
Ooh yeah 🧨
MJ (host) 9:37:46 AM
yeahhhh 🔥 whats up jim
MJ (host) 9:39:30 AM
And Dan, thanks for sharing, I had NO idea that Eggleston (1) did the red Big Star cover and (2) is from Memphis. But it makes sense that his eye for the arrestingly desolate look of gas stations, drive throughs, foreclosed shops, etc. would've been formed in the South
MJ (host) 9:41:42 AM
As far as his music goes I really enjoy his sneaky good piano cover of Ol Man River
dan Cochrane 9:44:41 AM
Yes, those grainy b&w home movies of him are amazing. On YouTube besides!
dan Cochrane 9:45:39 AM
Musically, visually gifted, like Don von Vliet in a way.
TAndy 9:58:05 AM
Hey thanks for the show MJ! Loved the sprinkle of shoegaze at the very end :)
MJ (host) 9:59:58 AM
Of course, thanks for listening, TAndy! You know I gotta provide for the shoegazers
MJ (host) 10:00:12 AM
Have a wonderful day, folks
