Featuring ZEUHL 🌋. Zeuhl is a style of avant-prog created by drummer and vocalist Christian Vander and his group “Magma” in the early 1970s. Zeuhl mixes jazz fusion, progressive rock, and modern classical music. Elements to look for: Zeuhl usually has an oppressive or a discipline-conveying feel, it can be bombastic and minimalistic (heavy use of ostinato), it’s dark and brooding, adventurous and angelic, (sometimes both brooding and angelic at the same time), plus growling bass lines. And Zeuhl vocals are usually some invented language.

Weidorje - Vilna
Weidorje Vilna
Weidorje Musea 1977

Weidorje is a progressive rock/fusion/Zeuhl supergroup from France, that was formed in 1976. Weidorje took its name from a track on "Üdü Ẁüdü" . The core members were from Magma and Heldon, and they were joined by some of the busiest session talent on the Paris scene at the time. Weidorje was very Magma styled, but it also included brass (which Magma mostly dropped early on) giving it a distinctive sound of its own. The band split up around 1979 after releasing their only album. Virtually everyone involved in Weidorje went on to other projects and/or released solo albums shortly after Weidorje's demise.

Ardeur Musique Post Atomique 1980
Eskaton is a French progressive rock/Zeuhl band. Founded in 1970, disbanded in 1985. Eskaton took Magma "Kohntarkosz" influences, mixed in prog, lots of electronics and increasingly elements of cold wave. This unique concoction, fronted by two female vocalists, made for a distinctive Zeuhl sound.

Jannick Top - Utopia Viva
Jannick Top Utopia Viva
Soleil D'Ork Utopic Records 2001

Jannick Top had the idea of adapting his cellist playing on a bass guitar by retuning his bass like a cello. By doing so, he overturned the methodology, the practice and the sound of the instrument. It is his recognizable sound that is the distinctive Zeuhl signature.

Jannick Top played with Magma for only a few years, but left after Summer of 1974, exhausted by the tough life on the road and the financial insecurity of the group. He thrived as a session player.

Thollot Ascension
Contact Soleil Zeuhl 2002

François Thollot is a French multi-instrumentalist (guitar, bass, piano, drums) born in 1973 who composes music following (and is influenced by) Magma styled instrumental Zeuhl. Thollot later formed the RIO, Zeuhl and Canterbury inspired fusion band Scherzoo.

I remember going to a Magma concert at the Knitting Factory in 2003 or so. It was definitely *not* what my young punk self needed. There was a noise rock show the same night that I tried to go to, but I wasn't 21 so they didn't let me in. All in all a disappointing night. (I had also printed out early mapquest directions to get where I was going and it took me on this huge dogleg under the Manhattan Bridge (?) overpass because of one way streets.)
