Good morning! Let's make those dreams and rooms gleam
dan Cochrane 10:03:32 AM
Welcome to May! Wish I owned a May pole, and my liquor store sold Meade.
dan Cochrane 10:04:45 AM
Dan’s not a popular name these days. Glad you’re here!
fr1dayafternoon 10:05:15 AM
Good morning, all
dan Cochrane 10:06:17 AM
Sounds promising…
Dan Ruccia (host) 10:07:52 AM
Hi Dan and fr1day!
fr1dayafternoon 10:09:00 AM
Checked out this new Bill Callahan album when out came out and was pleasantly surprised after his one prior left me underwhelmed
Michael Youngkin 10:09:17 AM
This song is great
Michael Youngkin 10:09:42 AM
Should I text it to my exgirlfriend in east tennessee?
Dan Ruccia (host) 10:09:56 AM
I always love me a song about writing songs. Maybe I should also play that one David Allen Coe song about writing songs?
Dan Ruccia (host) 10:10:06 AM
Also, RIP David Allen Coe
fr1dayafternoon 10:10:27 AM
I mean, seems fitting, Michael
Michael Youngkin 10:11:52 AM
What could go wrong?
Pat G. 10:12:19 AM
Thanks for saving the day Dan! I'm over here chugging antibiotics and enjoying the show.
Pat G. 10:13:02 AM
Callahan was just at the Philly Record Exchange doing a solo show. Anybody attend?
Pat G. 10:13:28 AM
And by just I mean like a month or so ago, I think
Michael Youngkin 10:14:15 AM
I wanted to go, but somehow it got away
fr1dayafternoon 10:14:42 AM
Hey Pat, it's anted to go but had Phillies tickets that afternoon and couldn't muster up a second wind
dan Cochrane 10:15:39 AM
I just learned the electronic meaning of Jacob’s Ladder, fascinating.
fr1dayafternoon 10:16:18 AM
I saw him play fully stripped down set at Woodsist Festival a couple years. Really great, commanding.
Dan Ruccia (host) 10:16:49 AM
Would love to see him live sometime
Norman Burnosky 10:17:54 AM
youme was lovely and gave me some goosebumps
fr1dayafternoon 10:18:19 AM
Saw him with a full band too but solo was awesome
Dan Ruccia (host) 10:18:31 AM
Same, actually, Norman. Seriously one of my all-time favorite songs
(Co-Host) Mike Lupica 10:21:32 AM
Tagging in late to say how much I love that Neubauten song. I'm pretty sure that's the record that (former WPRB DJ Brian Farmer) tagged as "German R&B" on PRB's library copy.
Dan Ruccia (host) 10:25:06 AM
It's really crazy to me that a band that go its start smashing concrete could evolve to make something so sublime. I suppose it's not that different an arc than Bill Orcutt's, now that I think about it
(Co-Host) Mike Lupica 10:25:59 AM
Very true. Unrelated: David Allen Coe died last night, so if you want to play the Dead Kennedys version of "Take This Job and Shove It", I'm sure no one would mind.
Dan Ruccia (host) 10:26:45 AM
Feels like an appropriate tune to play on May Day!
dan Cochrane 10:27:27 AM
Assumed raucous version…
Pat G. 10:27:27 AM
yeah, I had no idea einstürzende neubauten could sound like that!
Dan Ruccia (host) 10:29:23 AM
Somehow in the 21st century, they turned super sublime. I remember someone quipping that Blixa Bargeld leaving the Bad Seeds turned out to be the best thing to happen to both Neubatuen and Nick Cave
dan Cochrane 10:29:37 AM
I look at the gas pump and see it say’s five…bucks a gallon
Chef Emeril "ADD 5" Lagasse 10:31:03 AM
That setting track was sweet
Chef Emeril "ADD 5" Lagasse 10:31:28 AM
Was also funny hearing the first song at 10 about cleaning up while I was also cleaning up at 10
dan Cochrane 10:32:02 AM
Love Caliphone
Dan Ruccia (host) 10:36:36 AM
@Chef: I was actually planning to play it later, but then I remembered that lyric and said, no, it must go on at 10
Chef Emeril "ADD 5" Lagasse 10:38:46 AM
Excellent choice lol
dan Cochrane 10:39:08 AM
Califone sorry, and I’m from Chicago, dah
(Co-Host) Mike Lupica 10:52:17 AM
YEE-HAW!!!
Christine 𓅓𓅥 𓅊 10:52:33 AM
DK 💜
Dan Ruccia (host) 10:52:40 AM
I feel like there's gotta be an equally delirious cover of this by Eugene Chadbourne somewhere
Kelly Nielsen 10:52:50 AM
Yesssssssss
(Co-Host) Mike Lupica 10:52:51 AM
Feels weird to be cheering this song on when I have a call with my boss later today.
Brian D 10:53:22 AM
Bedtime DKs! Still love looking through the newspaper insert in the lp. So many Easter eggs
(Co-Host) Mike Lupica 10:54:11 AM
@Brian, co-signed
dan Cochrane 10:54:49 AM
I assumed Eugene never had a job he didn’t like
dan Cochrane 10:55:19 AM
Hey Bri’!
(Co-Host) Mike Lupica 10:55:45 AM
I think "Religious Vomit" by DKs was the first proper hardcore song I ever heard. I played it for a few kids in my (Catholic school) homeroom, and they all ended up in jail. I see no connection whatsoever between these two events. (Exits room, whistling.)
Dan Ruccia (host) 10:56:26 AM
@Dan: I just want to hear him with Brian and the Haggards riproaring through it like they did with all those Merle Haggard tunes
dan Cochrane 10:57:09 AM
Altar cations, one sip of wine, yep
Liz Bot 10:58:39 AM
Love this Comets on Fire!
dan Cochrane 10:59:19 AM
I subbed K-5 music this week, taught Bach, Beethoven…with Mad Libs about both. No, not one mention of Bach’s organ.
Brian D 10:59:41 AM
Saw David Allen Coe at Sellersville Theater about 10 yrs ago (ticket was a gift). He had a bright shiny copper/ gold wig that must have been 6 feet long. Strange show. Some good songs. Had his teen kid in the small backing band on lead gtr. Good picker. But they had to stand there w their instruments in hand like statues for 30 mins from the start as David played solo songs for a while. David played an electric Dimebag Darrell pointy metal guitar (but strummed lightly). Strange yep.
dan Cochrane 11:02:52 AM
Welcome to May Lizbot
Liz Bot 11:03:07 AM
Lots of Georges! Thankfully I have it on good authority that my George is listening in his car right now
Liz Bot 11:03:34 AM
Hi Dan! Happy May Day! ✊🌸

Ya just got the new ... George and the Spleen Bandicamp Bandecoots VanDeKamps notification. Go George(s)!
Christine 𓅓𓅥 𓅊 11:04:50 AM
LOVE Laurie Spiegel 💖
dan Cochrane 11:04:52 AM
I saw The Lurking Dan’s ten years ago…
Christine 𓅓𓅥 𓅊 11:05:11 AM
Sounding great today, Dan 🐙
Brian D 11:05:30 AM
Lurkin Murkins
Liz Bot 11:05:33 AM
Hi Brian D! Haha, nice! He’s playing with Cheer-Accident this summer
dan Cochrane 11:05:40 AM
Talk about organ!
Dan Ruccia (host) 11:05:59 AM
Hi Lizbot and Christine!
Liz Bot 11:06:58 AM
It’s funny hearing this track because it’s my second Laurie Spiegel go-to track for transferring into live broadcast at the beginning of my shows, the first being her piece “Patchwork”. This is triggering a “about to go on mic” response in my brain!
Liz Bot 11:07:20 AM
Hi Dan! Hi Christine!
Dan Ruccia (host) 11:07:49 AM
It's like whenever I hear that one Young Marble Giants song that used to be WPRB's signoff music. It always makes me feel like it's waaaay too late and I need to get to bed
ParrScream 11:08:05 AM
Hey everyone! Good morning!
Christine 𓅓𓅥 𓅊 11:08:41 AM
Hey Dan R, Dan C, Clamour Club Pat, Liz Bot 🤖, Brian D, Mike Lupica, Kelly, Chef 🍳 & all
Liz Bot 11:08:46 AM
@Dan Ruccia - Yes! I still have that response when I hear that YMG song!
Christine 𓅓𓅥 𓅊 11:08:54 AM
& Parrscream!
dan Cochrane 11:09:00 AM
I call that affliction You Tube Itis
ParrScream 11:09:21 AM
Hey Christine!
dan Cochrane 11:10:04 AM
With visible clock in the kitchen
Liz Bot 11:10:24 AM
Hi ParrScream!
Brian D 11:10:34 AM
Totally Liz... expecting your enthusiastic voice to appear after Spiegel keys sounds
ParrScream 11:10:47 AM
Hey Liz! How are you?
Liz Bot 11:12:44 AM
@Brian D - haha, yeah. Ever since I went all-Spiegel transitions all the the time years ago, I can’t hear her tracks without going into a gearing up for the mic mode, which is a weird contrast with the whole ambient vibes listening to her music!
Liz Bot 11:13:09 AM
@ParrScream - Good! Having a nice if somewhat chilly May Day!
Brian D 11:13:51 AM
Hearing that Pell Mell track and not hearing a concert calendar. Hearing Orson Welles voice and not craving fish fingers (with a crumb crisp added). Hearing Dr Quincy M.E. and thinking about music that makes you want to love as syrupy Glen Miller plays....
dan Cochrane 11:15:18 AM
Liz, I just read that Arthur C. Clark left the premier of 2001 in tears at intermission (no pun intended). After watching 11 minutes of crew member jogging. Stanley must have noticed, they were part of 17 min. he cut immediately.
Christine 𓅓𓅥 𓅊 11:15:53 AM
@Liz Bot, I'm conditioned that way now too. I expect you to hop on the mic if I hear Laurie Spiegel!
Liz Bot 11:16:27 AM
@Brian D - mmm, crumb crisp coating
Brian D 11:16:34 AM
I was programmed by Dr Chandra. He taught me to sing a song. Daisy, Daisy give me your answer true....
Liz Bot 11:17:47 AM
@ Christine 𓅓𓅥 𓅊 - haha, yeah, I don’t know how to feel about that! I did it to myself too! It’s because I love Spiegel so much and it works well as transition music, but it directly changed my relationship to how I hear/listen to it now!
dan Cochrane 11:18:05 AM
Which I’m sure you know was the first thing uttered by a IBM computer.
Brian D 11:19:49 AM
Ahoy ahoy! Mr Watson - come here - I want to see you.
Liz Bot 11:20:34 AM
@Dan Cochrane - oh wow! I never heard that story, but for Kubrick to have made large last-minute cuts like that, he must’ve really cared about Arthur C Clarke’s reaction because a lot of directors wouldn’t bend to the author wishes like that!
dan Cochrane 11:21:47 AM
It’s in Kubrick book I’m reading
dan Cochrane 11:22:15 AM
So true Liz
Liz Bot 11:26:21 AM
The Ex’s “The Pie” station ID is fitting for May Day! We all need a "flan of action"! Take a one pound sweet potato, mix it up with cream and sugar with a 1” pie crust…Only you can globalize… 🍠🥧
dan Cochrane 11:28:45 AM
“Don’t take any wooden nutmegs!” Which apparently were scammed back in the day.
Liz Bot 11:28:54 AM
Haha, perfect! Ground nutmeg, ground cinnamon, how could I forget! My pie sucked! I just dumped potato cream and sugar in a premade crust! Still good enough for pie-ing people in the face!
Brian D 11:29:05 AM
TAKE A SWEET PO-TAY-TO!
dan Cochrane 11:29:43 AM
NUTMEG RYAN
Liz Bot 11:30:12 AM
@Dan Cochrane - hand-grinding whole nutmegs and filling the air with nutmeggy fine powder smells is a simple pleasure!
dan Cochrane 11:30:49 AM
I can imagine!
Liz Bot 11:30:57 AM
The Nutmeg State- Rhode Island! I guess they grow there? Not sure why I know this trivia, but it stuck with me
dan Cochrane 11:32:05 AM
Only on my eggnog…so far
Liz Bot 11:32:35 AM
@Dan Ruccia - I took a couple photos of US Maple and Cheer Accident playing in my friend’s basement in West Philly circa 2005 or so! Jeff Liebersher from C-A got them to wear creepy masks!
Liz Bot 11:34:00 AM
Omg, Shane Parish! Okay, is this a set of artists who played The AGL in the mid-2000s?! I love Shane! Missed him at Big Ears this year
Dan Ruccia (host) 11:36:01 AM
Seeing US Maple in a basement must have been a trip! I saw them at the Khyber in 2004 or so with some hip Philly band opening for them. Most of the crowd promptly left after said band which left like 20 of us to get our ears properly retuned. Something similar happened around that same time with Sun City Girls
Liz Bot 11:40:23 AM
@Dan Ruccia - ha! I can picture that! US Maple, Cheer-Accident, Ahleuchatistas, Mary Halvorson, Upsilon Acrux, Uz Jsme Doma all played that house on Ludlow in West Philly, the Avant Gentleman’s Lodge! Great times!
Liz Bot 11:44:21 AM
Also Nels cline and Nornal Love, and Satanized, which briefly included teenaged Natalie Mering, AKA Weyes Blood! Sadly that space got conquered by complaining neighbor business who was actually a dance nonprofit that wasn’t open at night. But these show spaces can be fleeting!
dan Cochrane 11:46:30 AM
Such a lovely way to begin month, and weekend besides
Liz Bot 11:49:19 AM
Loved the show today, Dan! Thanks! I didn’t have it on at the very beginning and then George texted me at work that there was a great set on PRB!
dan Cochrane 11:50:13 AM
As much as I miss Jay Bennett, Nels Cline is a monster, avante guitarist.
Dan Ruccia (host) 11:51:32 AM
Thanks Lizbot and Dan! Always fun to kinda just throw a show together
Liz Bot 11:52:47 AM
Perfect vibes set for a sunny May weekend!
dan Cochrane 11:53:26 AM
The birds are singing, the grass is growing
(Co-Host) Mike Lupica 11:53:40 AM
I just looked at the playlist and realized what this is a cover of. Wow!
Liz Bot 11:53:50 AM
I wonder how many covers of Jennifer there are? I had some sampler record store promo CD in the late 90s with Q Burns Abstract Message cover of this song
dan Cochrane 11:54:18 AM
Birds are doing other stuff together of course…bees too
Dan Ruccia (host) 11:55:05 AM
This cassette is apparently a benefit for music writer Jennifer Kelly. https://hermithut.bandcamp.com/album/six-organs-of-admittance-featuring-the-six-organs-olive-choir
dan Cochrane 11:56:25 AM
I just heard a cuckoo
Liz Bot 11:56:31 AM
Meg Baird vocals in there, speaking of Espers/Philly!
George Korein 11:56:39 AM
Love this show!!!!
Christine 𓅓𓅥 𓅊 11:57:13 AM
Excellent show. Cheers, Dan! 🐙
dan Cochrane 11:57:52 AM
Screen shot playlist highest compliment
Brian D 11:57:56 AM
Great show Octo Dan! Heard you late ish night sub earlier this week. Good stuff.
Christine 𓅓𓅥 𓅊 11:58:11 AM
🍠🥧
George Korein 11:58:20 AM
My socks were rocked by the one that turned out to be George
dan Cochrane 11:58:39 AM
May Day, ironic
Liz Bot 11:58:45 AM
Helena Espvall, former Espers cellist, lives in Portugal now and has a band now called Beautify Junkyards that I’ve been enjoying
Dan Ruccia (host) 11:59:09 AM
Thanks, y'all! Happy May day and hope you all have a good weekend! See you next time
dan Cochrane 11:59:36 AM
Fo’ sho’
Liz Bot 12:00:31 PM
This Charanjit Singh song is also sooo good! Thanks Dan R!
