Hi Grace & Jagannath et al., I just wanted to tell you both how much I love your shows and how much food for thought, material -- music, poetry, schools of thought, etc. -- to revisit, and words/ideas to ponder you give me every week! You enrich my life immeasurably! With love, respect, and gratitude, T
Grace (host) 11:23:49 AM

Richard Liotta 11:28:41 AM

Kelly Nielsen 11:34:31 AM
Couldn't have said it better, Teresa
Teresa PRBsupporter4eva Peacock 11:35:03 AM
It just occurred to me that the moody pipe organ that offsets the industrial horns of Avraamov's piece is so striking in its secularity within a Russian composition as pipe organ never plays a part of the Eastern Orthodox musical vocabulary.
Teresa PRBsupporter4eva Peacock 11:36:21 AM
@Kelly -- Aw, thank you! <3
Grace (host) 11:39:33 AM
@Teresa YEs! I read here: https://www.khismatov.com/projects/the-symphony-of-industrial-horns.
Grace (host) 11:39:45 AM
"Specially for this symphony composer constructed a huge instrument called Magistral. It represents itself an organ of multiple industrial horns"
Grace (host) 11:40:00 AM
The Magistral ~!
Teresa PRBsupporter4eva Peacock 11:41:54 AM
@Grace -- Wow! I've never heard of The Magistral before! Fascinating! Dang -- I learn so so much from you guys!!! <3
DJ Jagannath 11:44:11 AM
teresa that's a great point. there's a lot of interesting interplay between secularity and religion in avraamov's work. his last name here is a pseudonym, actually (abraham!)
DJ Jagannath 11:46:21 AM
the early soviet experimental music/literature was infused with this desire to overcome the mystic eastern orthodoxy that pervaded the idea of 'holy russia', to varying degrees of success. some of prokofiev and shosty. and in the literature, aleksandr blok's poetry
Keith Villamil 11:48:33 AM
You guys rock !
DJ Jagannath 11:49:33 AM
thanks for listening guys!
Richard Liotta 11:49:43 AM
Great show today...
Grace (host) 11:51:41 AM
Thanks so much everyone ~!
Teresa PRBsupporter4eva Peacock 11:52:06 AM
@Jagannath -- Yes, exactly! Avraamov is very pointedly showcasing the industrial sounds within a -- to my ears --nonsecular musical vocabulary that evokes Bach among others. It's like he is rejecting the Orthodox mystagogy in favor of the "new religion" of the emergent Soviet system.
Teresa PRBsupporter4eva Peacock 11:53:26 AM
Also -- I love Ilya Kaminsky's work too! For anyone who wants to know a bit more about him, here's his wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ilya_Kaminsky
Teresa PRBsupporter4eva Peacock 11:55:45 AM
Thank you for your amazing show today!
