My wife took some gong courses and we attended some wonderful gong performances where bringing pillows, blankets, mats was encouraged. Falling asleep was like the best applause in some ways. But at times the thunder going on was in no way sleep conducive. Good times

Ya we made up a bunch of fun t shirts for her w/my mom when she was attending. Great craft fabric paint madness. Lots of puns & pop culture joke sayings on the shirts.

Saw Lemonheads in peak Evan Dando crackhead mode and we THOUGHT Evan would pass out but he rallied.

I took a short nap the second time I saw Dune having run a 10 mile race in the morning and had some South Indian food in-between. It was the most restful experience of my life to-date.

I remember hearing about a friend's friend falling asleep while leaning against the wall at the original 930 Club to some really noisy band like Vomit Launch

The best info I received was that you should NEVER just smash a gong dead center like they do in the cartoons and movies. Can seriously F up your instrument. Warp it and put it out of sorts for good. The best is starting out w soft hits then build to thunder and you don't need hard hits for the thunder. It just comes natural w big discs of METAL (Hetfield HUNH! after that). Can feel it in your rib cage totally. Great therapy playing gongs.

Dune 1 has a scene BEFORE the opening copious production company lists that is pretty bonkers and startling.

They make these gong sticks with Superball rubber ends. Not for hitting only. You squeak them on the surface! The tacky rubber gets the metal vibrating and you get these wild whale calls / bird squawks.

Just rub the ends on the face of the gong and it gets these wild sounds

Saw a dude selling cool microlabel tapes at Eli's in Oakland who passed out on his wares. No one could rouse him. Just let him sleep.

Seek out the recordings of Harry Bertoia. Local ish percussion musician and instrument builder. Built gongs of all shapes and sizes (one was like 20 feet tall and a foot thick). And some wild percussion instruments that are constructed of long metal rods fixed to a base that you release, hit etc and they make these out of the world sounds. Like Sideshow Bob's hair looking things that SPROING!! outward and thunder

My friend Tim has a good story about a sleeping person at a show who was out cold for their set so a different member of his band wrote "I missed Aus-Rotten" on his face.

We went to a great gong concert at the Widow Jane Mine in the Woodstock NY area near Rosendale, NY. They have had other concerts there over the years (Tony Levin, Steve Gorn and a third person??). The venue is in a cave! Not like under the earth tho, partially open air, easy to access. Half of the mine area was water & half was dry ground/gravel to put up chairs etc and that's where the musicians played. That location also bottles the natural mine water and distills it into bourbons, etc.

There's a cave that does shows in TN. The mighty Sunno))) played there and I'm shocked it didn't cave in.

Great reverberating acoustics for gongs etc in a mine. The gong concert was people from her gong school camp. The gong camp was held yearly in Bucks County, not sure if it is still going on. People from all over the world attended classes. You get a Zildjian Master Certificate if you graduate!
